Think we got problems getting 5-star players, there’s a Booze shortage

Jan 28, 2022, 11:11 AM

according to today’s WSJournal due to the pandemic run on it.

Diageo PLC in London said soaring demand due to $ in people’s pockets has depleted stocks of its Crown Royal whiskey, Lagavulin Scotch & Don Julio tequila.

These bestselling brands can take months to years to age b/4 hitting liquor-store shelves again.

Also, a bottle shortage has limited packaging of Bulleit bourbon.

To make up, Diageo is raising prices including in the U.S. while lines like Johnnie Walker are plentiful.

Some of their other brands are: Tanqueray gin, Smirnoff vodka and Guinness stout.

Go TiGERS & cheers to you if you’re a valued 3-Star player since Clemson will make you into a Natty Champion, liquor shortage or not!

Lagavulin is NOT for the faint of heart!

Jan 28, 2022, 11:13 AM

That is one strongly flavored single malt. I drank it for a number of years before I switched to Laphroaig.

Never tried Scotch. What would you say is the big difference taste wise to a bourbon? Totally different?

At some time in history a Scot asked "What are we going to do with all this dirt?". Someone jokingly replied, "Let's flavor our whiskey with it." It's all downhill from there.

So if I drink bourbon I should leave this stuff alone?

Less sweet. Definitely would not start with lagavulin. Islay scotches are extremely potent. My wife says it tastes like a bandaid. Most bourbon drinkers seem to prefer blends to the single malts from my experience.

Balvenie doublewood to me is the closest to bourbon that I've had

Little bourbon experience for me, but Single Malts like

Jan 28, 2022, 11:40 AM [ in reply to Re: Lagavulin is NOT for the faint of heart! ]

Lagavulin and Laphroaig typically have a richer smokier more complex flavor. The Lagavulin is very strongly flavored while the Laphroaig 10 year old, though strongly flavored, has a smoother sweeter taste to me. Laphroaig says they smoke the malt barley and then dry it over a peat fire. Smokey sweet.

Also, the Single Malt buzz is just relaxing silky comfortably smooth. It will sneak up on you.

Bourbon sneaks up on me and I have one heck of a hangover. Had to step back a little on my consumption.

Laphroaig doesn't give you a hangover.

Jan 28, 2022, 12:30 PM

But then, I drink them neat or with a small cube or two.

Yea I do not even think I have drank with anyone that drank Scotch. Figured it’s a Scottish whiskey so might as well keep my drinking from Made in the USA liquor.

You're getting a lot of bad information.

Jan 28, 2022, 12:31 PM

Perhaps you should just buy a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year old and make up your own mind.

Just throwing it out there

Jan 28, 2022, 2:29 PM

if you have interest in whiskey in general and want to try something other than bourbon but not quite sure you want to go full campfire like scotch, then there are also single malt irish whiskies that are quite good. Tyrconnel is a good one for a reasonable price.

Re: Just throwing it out there

I like Scotch (Macallan) and Irish Whiskey.
After being introduced to Redbreast Irish Whiskey by an owner of an Irish Bar near Chicago, I found it to be excellent. It's a little more pricey but worth it. I can't afford the 27 yo Redbreast (~ $650 per bottle), but it received a perfect 100 score by the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI). It tastes good enough to make you throw your Mama in the creek. ?? The 12 and 15 yo are excellent too.

Have you seen the prices on bourbons now a days? Right up there with Scotch prices. So with that any more it comes down to taste preference. I like to have both on hand.

Scotch varies pretty widely based on region

Jan 28, 2022, 12:25 PM [ in reply to Re: Lagavulin is NOT for the faint of heart! ]

The Speyside scotches (Glenlivet, etc.) are pretty smooth and have more of a vanilla finish.

Highland scotch is a little more strongly flavored - pretty similar to Speyside.

Then therare are the Islay scotches like Laphroaig and Lagavulin, which taste really really smoky (from the peat that they burn to dry the malted barley).

I've gotten where I really enjoy the Islay peat flavor - have a bottle of Ardbeg 10 year that is quite good. It's a bit like having a whiskey and smoking a cigar, without the cigar.

Bourbon is sweeter than scotch, I'd say. And it has the distinctive oak flavor and smell.

Oak casks

Make it a different flavor

I love the Macallan 10,12,15,18 and I drank a bottle of 32 with my uncle. That one was way better than pappys

Yep. Noticed it at Christmas, thought it was the holidays.

Jan 28, 2022, 11:24 AM

because people like me only hit the liquor store maybe a couple of times a year - but nope, 'twas supply chain.

Had to buy a bigger-than-usual for me bottle, as the 750mls were gone.

I bet there really isn't a huge shortage but news like this will send every ###### and drunker to the store to grab and it will end up like a toilet paper issue. People hoarding whiskey and then selling online for 2-3x as much.

I've got 10 bottles of single malt, 8 Bourbons and some rare Rum so I'm good but still this is ridiculous, the #### media is driving our ####### country right now. And they have no idea how to handle the S curves, chicanes and or know how to ####### trail brake..

T-Net subscriber I can attest to the smooth smokiness of Lagavulin . . . and Bill, I “lights” it!!!

A Great Special Occasion Scotch . . . but my “everyday Scotch” is still Famous Grouse or Naked Grouse.
