going forward for an independent to make the playoffs if it stays at four teams. I think NBC can justify paying that amount out for one team based on how widespread the Irish-Catholic Notre Dame fan base is, but only to a point. I'm not sure that NBC will want to pony up and compete when the ACC Network gets established. Sure, Notre Dame has history, but it's not a brand with that much cachet right now, and it's been slowly eroding for a number of years. It's a digital media world and the Fighting Irish aren't the only thing on TV anymore, not even close. Heck, I watched Notre Dame football highlights on Sunday mornings when I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s because it was the only college football on. Further, I don't anticipate the next generations of Irish-Catholic fans to be as loyal to Notre Dame as previous generations were without being an actual alum.
