What’s the most selfish move you’ve made to go to a Clemson game?

Mar 31, 2022, 8:34 PM

I laughed at Eric Church canceling his sold out 18k concert to attend the Duke/UNC semifinal on Saturday. He admitted it’s a selfish decision, and has caught a ton of crap from everyone.

Maybe I’m weird, but I related to his decision. I’ve take a step back, Covid, NIL, transfers, being priced out of the market, and age have made me realize there are more important things than Clemson athletics. But there was a time it took something major to keep me away from a game.

I’m trying to think about some game I’ve attended where there were much more important things going on. I don’t have any truly crazy stories, but I’ve attended a game as mom headed to the ER after tripping and breaking her arm on the way. I skipped a Billy Graham crusade, and have attended games soon after my own surgeries.

I’m reminded about the old story about the man whose wife recently passed away and had two tickets and couldn’t find anyone to go to a Clemson/SC game because all of his friends would be at her funeral.

Does anyone have any good stories about being selfish and going to the game anyway? Thought it might turn into an interesting thread.

The FSU puntroski game. My son was due that date. I went to the game and left my wife with my mother. My son was born 6 hours after the game ended. Yes I made it there

If you had gone with your wife Clemson would have beat FSU. I hope you took son to next FSU home game to start his journey

Missed a close relative's wedding to see the Tigers beat Georgia in The Valley in 1987 with the help of probably the most famous safety in Tiger history. There was nothing better than beating the Dawgs but sadly our family relationship suffered for years.

South Carolina for my son years ago, so I rented him out to a childless couple for the weekend.

Not too bad of a deal, as the rent paid for the trip. Only problem was from then on, my son called me Big Daddy One...the other guy was Big Daddy Two. I remain chagrinned to this day and, frankly, a tad embarrassed!

(P.S.......just kidding, of course, but the tale seemed funny as I typed it! lol)

I skipped out on a good friend’s wedding for a Clemson/SC game and blamed him for scheduling it on such an important date. They have recently divorced so in hindsight I made the right call.

Yeah once skipped a lifelong friend’s wedding reception to go to Clemson/Carolina game, went to the wedding, but took off immediately after. He was really pissed at me, but then they got divorced only two or three years later so I didn’t I didn’t feel bad anymore

Anyone who knows me should also know that if you want me to attend your wedding, don't get married in the Fall.

I have a niece who is still mad at me.

Had to get it sewn back together. When I was hollering for my wife to get the keys I said, “before I show you this, we are still going to the Clemson/Miami game tonight.” I did watch a good bit of the game with my hand above my head to stop the throbbing but my consecutive home game attendance streak going back to 1995 is still in tact.

Missed several family weddings. Mostly Cousins but like others have said, If they really wanted me there they would not have scheduled during football season.

Like most, my group that attended the games got older, married, and had kids also the parking prices for the RV got way out of line. Still watch on the TV but haven't made it down in a few years.

Used to be some awesome weekends in Lot 4!!!!

2003 - family reunion at Sunset Beach - my brothers in from

Apr 1, 2022, 9:19 AM

all over - me with a 3 year old toddler.

Tried to get my brothers to go with me - left wife, little one, and all my family - I drove over to the game played on the face of the sun by myself - leghumpers crushed us.

I was one of about 100 people left in the stands at the end of the game - I didn't want to start the drive back to face the music after watching that epic beatdown.

The next day was the last fall race at Darlington and I tried to get my brothers to go with me - they wouldn't. I didn't go to that . . . . . should have.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

That must have been like a noon game I believe. Hot as you know what and my buddy had sold his tickets to GA fans. So that was fun. I believe they scored one over the top on the first play from scrimmage. Long day and an epic beat down.

As I've stated prior, my daughter attended uga. (instate with Zell Miller scholarship).

Once she was accepted, she found her roommate (online) and scheduled a trip to Athens to meet her and her family during the uga vs gt football game. I informed her that I would not be in attendance, because this game was being played at the same time that Clemson was playing the coots (noon kickoff that year). I told her I'd love to meet everyone for dinner that evening on my way home.

That's when the fight started. She tried to explain to me that meeting the person she was going to be living with was sort of a big deal.

I explained that (at the time) the coots had a 5 game win streak against Clemson and I was pretty sure this was going to be the year the streak ended.

She asked me how many of those games during this streak I had attended. I said I had been to 3 of them (Columbia the year that started the streak, and each of the games played in Clemson). She asked...and how has that been working out for you?.

She had a point here. She knew I was superstitious and was playing me like a fiddle.

So, I relented...I guess I didn't do the "selfish" route...I did wear my Clemson game day shirt (luckily it was cold and I had on a jacket...but it was discovered at halftime by some jerk sitting in front of me at the game).

I survived...uga lost...Clemson won...daughter was happy...It was a good day. To this day, I talk about the sacrifice I made to meet the family of a roommate she didn't like...and she tells me that keeping me away from Clemson that day is the reason the streak ended.

Went to the Clemson/Syracuse game the day after my mother died. Also went to the crappy Sugar Bowl 2 days after my father died the next year.

In my defense, they insisted that I go.

Tried to miss my BIL’s wedding because Miami at Clemson but wasn’t allowed. We did hold up the wedding party while listening to the overtime’s though.

Unselfishly, we gave to Iptay for 38 years. We were shown how much they valued our loyalty. It did show all 8 of us though that there is life after Saturdays at Clemson. Not saying we don’t miss the tailgating and games but we freed up enough money to create new ways and places to catch the tigers on Saturdays. There was a day when I thought that was not possible but Iptay made what I thought was impossible come to fruition.

jokes.

The Saturday foursome was about to tee off on a hole adjacent to the highway. Just about that time, a funeral procession came by on the road. Instead of teeing off, one of the guys took off his hat, placed it over his heart, and waited until the procession was gone before teeing off. One of his playing partners remarked "That was a classy thing you did there, acknowledging that funeral procession." The man said, "Well, it's only right. She was a good wife to me for forty two years."

Best golf joke ever...

Apr 1, 2022, 1:03 PM [ in reply to Your post reminded me of another of my favorite old golf ]

A married man had an early morning tee time with three of his friends.

Before he got out bed to get ready, he turned to his wife and said, "Honey...golf course or intercourse?"

The wife turned away and said, "It's chilly out this morning so be sure to take a jacket."

remember one of them telling me an anecdote, I am sure he was not the originator, but he knew whereof what he spoketh about. He said, (telling me he was not the originator, now that I think of it), for the first three years of your married life, put a nickel in a fishbowl for every time you have sex. After that time, for every time you have sex, take a nickel out. The fishbowl will never go empty.

And, another line that I did not believe at the time, but which I'll bet ANY old married couple will attest to:

"There will come a time in your married life where you have a choice between sleep and sex, and you will choose sleep."

(Probably after that first baby has kept you awake for about a month, not wanting to sleep at night.)

Was suppose to pick up family coming in for Thanksgiving at airport during 2003 63-17 S Carolina game. I really thought SC was going to win (they were even favored) so was expecting them to have a lead in second quarter and just anticipated on giving up on the game and then leave for the airport. However, as we all know, Tigers were so scoring so frequently and having such a good time, I couldn't take myself away from the TV... so they ended up waiting an additional two hours until I got there. They kind of understood but still give me grief about it to this day. #worthit
