Mud-motor / Jon boat experience?
Jul 5, 2018, 1:04 PM

|
I'm kicking around the idea of getting a 14' or so jon-boat and throwing a diy mud-motor on it to do some running around on the Edisto River and fishing some on Lake Murray.
I don't feel like tying a bunch of money into a boat for the lake (dad, brother, and I are in a Mexican standoff, waiting on the others to buy a boat). Dad is on the lake, so he should be the one to buy it, IMHO. Also, any nice lake worthy boat would be shiit for the river.
Anyways, does or has any of you run one of these? Thoughts? Wreckomendations?
Yea it's UDP, but that shouldn't shock any of you.

Don't feel bad. I've grown up on the water and in the woods my whole life and I had never seen or heard of one until last year. One of the mechanics at work showed up with one and now everybody here has one.
It's basically a quick/dirty/cheap way to make an outboard motor. Take a lawn mower engine (or similar) and bolt on a kit (or make your own). Boom! Cheap and serviceable boat motor for a fraction of the price.

V bottom better in the lake. Worser in river.

Wouldn't stick a mud motor on a john boat used in a lake, and especially not on the v-bottom model you showed. Flat bottom or gtfo with a mud motor. JMHO. Those are best for marsh and/or some serious swamps. Edisto has some. Sparkleberry is another great place for a flat-bottom john boat with a mud motor.
They DO have some nice 40-60HP traditional outboards retrofitted to handle mud. Might be a better bet if you want more versatility. Spensive though.

I don't necessarily "NEED" the mud swamp durability, but it would be nice. Mostly I just want a cheap outboard to throw on a john boat to fart around on.

unless you NEED one, steer clear (that was a pun)
As mentioned above, surface drives are the next generation mud motor. They are as expensive or more so than a traditional outboard.
Also, flat flat flat bottom on a mudboat. anything else will bog it down.

like a 4x4. a mud motor will just get you farther before you get stuck.

FIL has a 14" (maybe more) with a 60hp 4-stroke. Boat will do well north of 40mph. Also, you can drive it ALL FREAKING DAY on a tank of gas. Like from one end to the other of Lake Murray and back, twice.

they're work to drive. If I wasn't in the mud and jumping stumps and rocks all the time, I'd stick with an ordinary o/b.
As mentioned, needs to be on a flat bottom. Less draft and won't tip one way or the other when it runs aground, over a log, etc. making it even harder to drive.
meant to add that my old duck boat has a 25 merc on it that I make sure is unlocked so it just pops up when I ride over a log or stump. Doesn't help with driving through mud though.
How many of these do you see around edisto? Would you be the only UDP with one?
