Magnets in Football helmets to reduce impact.....

Jan 21, 2022, 11:55 AM

I thought I had a brilliant idea, but after googling it seems someone has already thought of that.
this article was from 2014.
The general idea is that "two magnets with their same poles face-to-face exert nearly 100 pounds of repulsive force."

Call the pillow man and he will design soft material made out of
something he finds some where. He makes everything else so why not
that?

I will never understand this. The answer is simple. Soft exteriors with an inner shell.

Agreed, they don't need to be playing football with motorcycle style helmets. A soft helmet is all that is needed.

But, but, but...

I can see every gang tackle ending with the defenders helmets stuck together... double team blocks ending with the blocker helmets stuck together... am I right?

No, the exact opposite. If all helmets have the same pole facing outward, then all helmets would repel. Think of a bar magnet being inserted in the helmet perpendicular to the outside of the helmet.

and provide ventilation. What do I know, I thought we'd all have flying cars by now.

snapping back, or to one side as their helmets try to repel each other.

Your average fridge magnets won't do anything, so...

Jan 21, 2022, 1:12 PM

you will need strong magnets to produce enough magnetic force.

Strong magnets = weight. Do you really want an extra 3-5 lbs of magnets in your helmets? No thanks.

Extra weight + field redirection will cause a lot of odd movement that would have to be supported by the neck.

You are correct, if it is strong enough to push away with X amount of force (what, 100lbs?) and then add a few extra pounds, then have a magnetic lateral "push", man, there would be some gnarly neck injuries.
