I think what many are missing about the portal is

Dec 27, 2021, 10:04 AM

A lot of these kids, probably 90% or more of them, know they have no shot at the NFL. So if they came to a team thinking they were going to make an impact and get a lot of playing time but end up 3rd string, I can’t blame them for moving on to a team where they’ll start. It’s called the “love of the game.“ Some kids just want to play more. I just can’t blame them for that, or criticize their enthusiasm for the game.

I disagree. If a player doesn't do exactly the thing

Dec 27, 2021, 10:09 AM

that I think he should do, regardless of circumstances or outlook, he is dead to me and is ruining college football.

Humorous way to make a point, will be lost on some though****

Re: I think what many are missing about the portal is

I agree to some extent, but it’s a mixed bag. Dabo has shown he is willing to invest 5 years of scholarship to develop these guys, regardless if they under perform. He has kept valuable roster spots that could be used for more 4*/5* depth for players that were clearly busts. For that, I imagine Dabo hopes for a little loyalty and patience that he is no longer getting. This begs the question, is the current Dabo loyalty destined to fail in the transfer portal era? Should he change to treating the players like commodities?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

as a highly recruited athlete, I can tell you that's wrong..

Dec 27, 2021, 3:34 PM

Coaches never tell you, "you'll be third string at best." That's not how it's done, regardless of how transparent you may think Dabo is, he would never tell a coveted recruit that. They all tell you that your potential is high and if you work hard and put in your best, you could be a starter in (insert the # of yrs here.) If that doesn't come to pass, the coach is just as guilty of misleading the recruit as the kid is of wanting to go somewhere he can play more at his current skill level. ESPECIALLY after investing 2-3 yrs in a system that he expected to get more playing time in. Sometimes, the kid realizes, hmmm... maybe my best isn't good enough for this team. At that point, you can't fault him for finding a place in which he's a better fit. Both player and coach enter every relationship knowing this is a possibility.

It's a huge gamble for most of the kids.

Dec 27, 2021, 10:24 AM

They're giving up a scholarship on the hope that another team picks them up and, in many cases, in fact the majority of cases, that isn't happening.

Nobody from Clemson that has left has had a problem finding a scholarship.

Thank you, finally another voice of maturity and reason. The Portal is not The Answer, it is a means for young students in all sports, not just football, to try to live their dream of playing in games.

Devil’s Advocate: If players are allowed to make purely self serving changes, should coaches (particularly Dabo) do the same?

Example: Pull scholarships from players who are taking longer to develop.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That has always been a option...

Dec 27, 2021, 10:46 AM

and a lot of schools do it (i.e., encourage underperforming players to leave).

Re: That has always been a option...

Dec 27, 2021, 10:55 AM

Right. But not doing that has been a cornerstone of Dabo’s program. He has used the word “invest” many times and often when referring to his roster. What good is investing in something that won’t pay dividends and will potentially damage your roster depth at a moments notice?

This isn’t being critical of Dabo’s way, this is simply stating be careful what you wish for. The more we (college fans) explain away these changes as simple “business decisions” the more college athletics become just that…a business (aka NFL Jr).

The Coaches knew TP would transfer if he didn't get to play

Dec 27, 2021, 11:07 AM

with our QB struggling mightily. They were basically letting him know that he was never going to play for Clemson other than some mop up duty in blowouts. That's why Coach Streeter supported his entry into the transfer portal.

Re: The Coaches knew TP would transfer if he didn't get to play

Dec 27, 2021, 11:52 AM

I don’t disagree with the TP situation, or his ability to transfer (although it’s a little bothersome to have it happen before the entirety of the seaso is complete). I imagine there are plenty of other situations just like this that all parties agree it is best to part ways without any hinderances.

Coaches make self serving changes all the time.

BV and TE for instance.

Re: Coaches make self serving changes all the time.

I understand what you are saying but that’s a little more like apples and oranges. They are employed, under contract, and typically have very explicit language in their contracts that prevent or monetarily damage the coach from certain moves.

Players can now transfer all over the place without any real regard for established consequences.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. It is apples to apples.

Dec 27, 2021, 11:04 AM

No difference.

Didn’t know the payers are under binding contracts. Thanks for the clarification.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yet they still make self serving decisions to leave.

Dec 27, 2021, 11:11 AM

A distinction without a difference.

It is a distinction without a difference when you ask

"If players are allowed to make purely self serving changes, should coaches (particularly Dabo) do the same?"

Several posters have pointed out how they already do.

Again, those coaches are under binding contracts that prevent or damage (monetarily) the coach from certain moves.

Re: Nope. It is apples to apples.

Dec 27, 2021, 11:18 AM [ in reply to Nope. It is apples to apples. ]

Not apples to apples.

First, a player is in school for an education (or supposed to be) and on a 3 to 5 year path - not lifetime or long duration. Playing college football, or any other sport, is not a career and is not intended to support a family. Very rarely are players dismissed if they do not live up to expectations - at least it's that way at Clemson.

For coaches, it's a career and money to support the family. Most assistant and position jobs are considered stepping stones for the most part, although some see it as a career. If a coach is not successful, they can be terminated. While dedicated players put in a lot of time, it's nowhere near the hours successful coaches work.

Those two coaches invested significant time in Clemson.

Dec 27, 2021, 11:05 AM [ in reply to Coaches make self serving changes all the time. ]

And they were instrumental in helping Clemson achieve great success. A coach leaving after a short tenure usually gets blasted, like Kiffen.

In reality, rules aren't exactly the same for absolutely everyone.

Chase Brice is a perfect example of a young man finding two teams where he can play and compete at his level.

Coach Streeter supported Taisun Phommachanh transferring

Dec 27, 2021, 10:49 AM

as he said in his interview. Football preparation is too #### hard if you aren't getting to play. If TP didn't get to play this year with our QB struggles, he was never going to play with Cade Klubnick coming in.

Time to move on.

So the good teams will never have good backups. Going to hurt the good teams and maybe help the not so good teams like one and done LSU!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course not. It's also an opportunity for Dabo to recruit

Dec 27, 2021, 11:34 AM

more 4 & 5 star players each year as the ones who can't get on the field move on to make room for better players.

You know Dabo will figure out how to maximize the opportunity while doing it with class.

Check out the OL Oklahoma just picked up: 2nd team All-Pac12, started 28 of 29 games for California. They also used the portal in the previous period to acquire an OL that wound up starting this entire season.
