The Golden Age of Metal

Nov 17, 2021, 2:29 PM

I don't know where one goes to get good metal these days, but the genre seems to be in a gavel-voiced thrash rut. Not that I can't appreciate both, it just seems there's not much else.

As a child I was force fed Conway Twitty and George Jones, so while they were playing on the living room stereo console, I was in my room...evolving....

The Possum Torture Device

It all began here at about age 5. Always looking for a faster beat, a hotter riff, a slicker solo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=868DSi85odQ

then to this solo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3IFVQhTqq4

tighter, more sour harmonies

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmkJSHp3GOs

frenetic, more chaotic syncopation. I still can't get from 1:00 to 1:30 without an O.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6gI2MBRmzw

more and more speed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md3B3I7Nmvw

more and more chaos...meter and time changes

Till we end up with Cattle Decapitation and Forced Gender Reassignment. But is it really better than the good old days from say 80-90? And where do we go from here?

like that, but I don't think they were on legs. Probably designed to sit on either side of a system like that.

Unfortunately the Star Wars writers weren't referencing the band, but an old movie character Commando Cody.

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

I think I evolved to George Jones

You skipped a whole genre

of amazing stoner rock, doom, and post-metal. Probably because your list doesn't start with Tommy Iommi, and his 90's/2000's offspring.

Here's some solid stuff from the last decade or so:

Seen them open for Clutch twice.

Nov 18, 2021, 1:31 PM

One show was fantastic, the other show was crippled by horrific sound engineering and both the band and the audience were frustrated.

Wretch has an old-school Sabbath vibe.
