I watched so much football yesterday, I don't even recall

Sep 25, 2022, 12:42 PM

which exact game this was in, but it stood out as a prime example of how the zebras can turn a game one way or the other. Team X threw a belated swing pass, which the receiver broke out for a run down the sidelines for a touchdown. But, wait, dreaded laundry on the field.

On replay, literally forty yards away from the play, an offensive lineman was slowly jogging as he followed the play. As I said, the QB has scrambled before throwing this pass. This offensive lineman, forty yards across the field, was flagged for being one yard too far down the field, ineligible receiver downfield, touchdown taken away, momentum swung hugely in the game.

Now, I understand what the intent of the ineligible receiver downfield rule is. And that intent was NOT served by that official flagging that play in that instance. That offensive lineman had no effect, and was not GOING to have any effect whatsoever on that play. It was merely one example of what I referred to in another post as "Home Cookin'" on the part of an officiating crew. Because, you, me, and even the old dog sleeping under the porch knows that there are certain penalties that could be called on literally EVERY PLAY. Holding, illegal hands to the face, blindside blocks, blocks below the waist, the crews can steer a game in the direction they want it to go by what they choose to call and not call.

That flies in the face of "fair" competition, and to put it bluntly, it has been how the SEC, for one, protects their most highly ranked darlings over the years. Just replace "Home" with "Highly Ranked", and you have their version. But, it exists many places.

That's one reason I am thankful that this week's upcoming game with NC State is in Death Valley, because Raleigh, NC, especially since Laptop Dave got there, is one of those restaurants where "Home Cookin'" is most prevalent. They even have after dinner cigars.

Go, Tigers!

Wonder what was in that red Solo cup diamond Dave was holding along with the cigar after last year's game.

That was the RT for Arkansas.... they got robbed in that game (might have been 1 yard past the LOS). Had flashbacks of ETN and Ellington vs WV going in for a 1 yd TD that turned out to be 6 going the other way when Arkansas' QB fumbled the ball on the one. watching Jimbo with his hat always on crooked and two days of rubble on his face makes me want to vomit in my mouth.

Also felt bad for Mizzu in OT when the RB fumbled the ball before crossing the goal line. Who did that for us? Didn't that happen to Amari Rodgers two or three times his freshman year before he grew up when he was literally about to score on a punt return for a TD?

I don't remember that happening to Amari, but it did happen to Ray-Ray McCloud once.

Me and my buddy yesterday were just talking about how officiating is pretty bad across the entire landscape of football this year. Just seems every year it actually gets worse. Officials have become too dependent on video review and the game in general has slowed down a good bit because of it. There has been many times where I question them reviewing "targeting" when it was never targeting to begin with. Or reviewing every TD when a lot of them don't need to be.

Me too. But I believe the call came in the OU/Kansas

game. But it was the right call against KU as the announcer said by the letter of the law. And KU overcame the penalty on this drive and scored.

I agree with your comments about the game. I am delighted that Saturday’s game is a real home game for our team.

Few would disagree if I said there is a penalty on every play if the rules were strictly enforced. To negate a play caused by a “penalty” far away from the real action is very bush league to me but it happens and likely will not stop,

I’m sure glad Saturday’s game is in the Valley because our fans CAN and I hope WILL make a difference in the outcome. I just ask our fan base to NOT be like our neighbors from Raleigh. NCSU fans truly make college football miserable for me because of their childish behavior at games. As great as college football is they can’t seem to enjoy it much of the time. Be there Saturday Loud and Proud but be a Clemson man!

Baylor - Iowa State was pretty bad. Baylor had zebras looking over them like guardian angels.
