Who is our "speed" guy at WR?

Jun 2, 2022, 8:28 AM

Do we even have a guy on the roster that's enough of a deep threat to scare D-Coordinators to the point where they won't stack the box all game to slow down the run and underneath stuff? I suspect it would have been A. Randall, but he's a True Frosh with a blown out knee. Ngata, the Collins dudes, and EJ have size, but not a lot of speed. I know we've had guys in the past that were productive deep, without elite speed, but guys Tee and Mike Williams both have pretty good long speed once they get going despite unimpressive 40 times. I haven't seen that much from the guys we have currently on the roster. Our best Offenses in the past have always had a guy that scares you deep to compliment the 50/50 jump ball guys.

Antonio Williams could be that speed guy, but he’s also a true freshman.

Will Taylor has some speed.

Maybe Williams, Stelato, or Spector? I am not sure. I am not sure how fast any of those guys are, but they all seem quick. I realize he won't help us this year, but hopefully that guy from Miami stays the course.

Speed threats aren't necessarily vertical threats, which we have plenty of. We desperately need a threat in the slot and on screens. That's what the offense was missing last year. Tee had Renfrow and Amari Rodgers. Mike had Renfrow and Artavis. Both of them excelled because defenses had to pay attention to our underneath passing game. We don't need a speed guy as a deep threat. We need someone that can take a screen 75 yards for a TD. We need someone that can be a threat on jet sweeps. We need someone that can get in and out of breaks on a 3rd and 5. If we have that, our 50/50 guys will see a lot more 1 on 1 coverages.

You make a good point about speed vs vertical threat

However, you ideally want your vertical threat to have speed too. Ladson was suppose to the speed guy the last few years, but he was always hurt and never available. I think that had a lot to do with why our passing offense wasn't as productive even in the last couple of years Trevor was QB despite having guys like Amari underneath. I'd kill for us to have a guy like Martavis Bryant on the roster. That's the kind of guy that make your offense fully bloom.

Even if they had speed, it's easy for defenses to take away deep shots. They are the easiest passing concepts to take away. You can use two-high safeties and either play 2-Man or Cover 4 all game. It's difficult to take shots when safeties play so far back. Obviously, the counter to that is to have a weapon in the slot and on screens. Who that will be for us this year? Spector, Will Taylor, Antonio Williams, and Troy Stellato seem like the only viable options. We will need at least 2 of them to emerge.

We were spoiled by Hunter Renfrow. There just aren’t many players out there with his skill set. Just look at what he is doing to the NFL.

Without Renfrow, we still had guys like Artavis, Ray-Ray, and Amari Rodgers. We need more of those.

That is the key. You dont need the deep guy to be THE guy on every play. You just need to take a few shots a game to a player that has the ability to take the top off so that the defense has to plan for it.

Correct...

We have no one that an elite D will fear getting behind them, no one to warrant an automatic cushion and spread the back end out early
