You know, when it comes to NFL quarterbacks, the league

Mar 19, 2022, 11:01 AM

seems to treat them like baseball does left handed pitchers. It doesn't matter if they are that good or not, they will keep getting shuffled from team to team, making a decent, or even outrageous paycheck, until they finally get old enough that nobody wants them anymore. The team that originally drafted them may give up pretty quickly, but somebody, somewhere always seems to think they are the ones with the magic lamp that will suddenly make these busts a star.

There is no other position on the roster where this is true. In fact, the opposite appears to be true in most cases. As soon as you get to the point of commanding a decent salary, the franchise boots you out, and signs a relatively cheap newcomer via the draft to take your place.

I would make the argument that the salary cap, in conjunction with ever spiraling upward free agent contracts, has done more to dilute the quality of the actual product on the NFL field than anything else in modern times. Player ability often has nothing to do with whether at team keeps that player. It is all about getting under the salary cap.

I think you have it only part right. Quarterbacks are treated depending on how successful they are. Tell me one team right now outside of say Kansas City, Cincinnati, Buffalo, and maybe Jacksonville that would not at least consider a trade for the GOAT ,and he is 42.I mention those teams because they all have young duel threat quarterbacks who have what it takes. Only Trevor is on a team that is not a contender because they just need to many positions ,skilled, and unskilled, before becoming a contender. But I believe you would take him in any of the other teams that are looking for that one guy.
Now granted maybe Aaron Rogers might fit your description of one of those old guys ,but he is dealing with G.M. who thinks Rogers does not need those skilled positions ,otherwise why would you trade Devante Adams?
And where were you when the trade was announced giving De Shaun Watson the biggest deal in the history of the NFL. Where is your salary cap now?
And if you think that player ability has nothing to do with it, just ask the teams that drafted Ryan Leaf ,and Johnny Manziel how that worked out.

How good a quarterback is, is sometimes a function of the team & organization he plays on.

I've seen some great quarterbacks through the years, that were stuck on bad teams, or bad organizations.

Starting with Archie Manning, Steve Bartkowski, Ken Anderson, even Drew Bledsoe, never won championships. There's guys like Jim Plunket & Steve Young that struggled with the teams that drafted them, and became HOFers winning championships with other teams.

What if Joe Montana or Tom Brady were drafted by Detroit? Would they have ever won a championship?

Sure, there are a lot of mediocre QB's making good money, but that's a function of the role. I'm sure Charlie Whitehurst is glad he could retire comfortably, after a career holding a clipboard.

Shoot, just look at our QB's the last 10 years. Some played great football while here, but only 2 became NFL starters.
