You know what needs to be taught in HS? I'll tell you...

Jul 7, 2021, 12:23 PM

BASIC ECONOMICS!

Things like how banks work, balancing a checkbook, saving, compound interest (or simple interest for that matter), budgeting, investing, taxes.....

Too many kids have no idea about this

Jul 7, 2021, 12:34 PM [ in reply to Nope, anybody that understands that can be successful ]

But you're not going to be taught it by default in government schools, funded by tax dollars, leveraged on debt.

I'm pretty sure bringing up successful black people is racist.

nononononono. MAJOR bad idea.

Jul 7, 2021, 12:29 PM

We need financially illiterate people. They are the reason we have free internet websites. You like that credit card? Thank someone financially illiterate. Checking account? Banks? You like your house? You want a mortgage? Just a very bad idea. There's a reason we don't teach kids basic economics. Rich parents who beget rich children do that. The kid whose mom turns in her car title for a title loan, that kid is needed to make financially literate people wealthier.

I know this is tongue in cheek, but really we don't teach that stuff for this exact reason.

Just think of the "wealth" in our economy, based on the debt of financially illiterate people.

understand interest and those who don't. Those who do earn it, and those who don't pay it." - Dr. Hugh Macauley, Clemson Univ.

Wasn't original to him, but that's who I heard it from.

"All we have to divide among us is the sum of what we produce." Another Macauley-ism most people don't understand, certainly not the people approving the printing of more debt financed cash as the way out of a shutdown.

I had economics in school

Somehow they left off balancing a checkbook, managing debt, minimizing taxes, investing, commuted value, compound interest, insurance, capital gains, 401K, IRA, or savings, property and sales taxes, etc.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

why would they ever teach minimizing taxes, comrade??***

Jul 7, 2021, 12:45 PM

badge-donor-05yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-conservativealex.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would argue that none of that should be in a Econ class.

Jul 7, 2021, 12:45 PM [ in reply to I had economics in school ]

I think I remember in middle school we had to take some home ec stuff...we cooked a couple things, sewed a few things. I don't know...some stuff that seems antiquated...maybe it's important to know basics? Anyway, basic life skills like managing a checking account (I'm not sure anyone manages a "Check book" any more...or balances it...just keep tabs online), the impact of debt and taxes, etc...that could all go into a life skills type of class, I suppose.

I taught Financial Literacy through a charity through a program at a previous job. Just these topics...checking, savings, debt, retirement accounts, compounding interest, etc. If anyone wanted to know what popular cell phone cases were out that year, I could tell you, because I saw the back of a LOT of cell phones. And no...they weren't recording the class to review later.

Jul 7, 2021, 12:46 PM [ in reply to I had economics in school ]

But as we know, it can all depend on where we go to school.

I have this same stuff as well minus balancing a checkbook

Jul 8, 2021, 11:12 AM

mainly because I don't want to spend the full class explaining what checks are.

Most econ guys I know teach this as well.

It's always fun listening to people who haven't been in a classroom since the 80's explain to me what we do and do not teach.

Jul 7, 2021, 1:04 PM

People still balance checkbooks? We very rarely ever write a check for anything these days…maybe one/month.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would you need to balance a checkbook

Jul 7, 2021, 1:10 PM

Everything is instant now. That's like cursive writing, useless.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Was this kind of thing ever taught in schools? I'm 36, and I never saw it.

By the way, "balancing a checkbook" makes you sound old. I haven't written a check in a really long time, much less balanced a checkbook :)
