Morris on South Carolina: "We had all better take it personally"

Offensive coordinator Chad Morris said Monday that Clemson's players and coaches had better take this weekend's game against South Carolina personally, and that the key to the game is playing basic football. Full Story »

Just like last year and the year before.

I hope that is not the case - but he was stubborn throughout the game last year. Hopefully he's learned a lesson and will stick somebody over there to help most of the time.

And - If the run doesn't work on the first two drives - that doesn't mean we abandon it & try to throw every down! My only complaint with Chad is abandoning the run game & pressing when we get down early.

Goodness, if Florida can run on SC, surely our boys can.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would hope we can, UF is one dimensional, everybody

Nov 26, 2013, 8:40 AM

in the stadium knew UF was going to run on every down and they had some success.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah that's kind of how I read it too

Nov 25, 2013, 2:58 PM [ in reply to Translation: "We're gonna throw Brandon out there 1-on-1" ]

Hopefully we're wrong about that. Thomas actually did pretty well last year. You can't expect to leave him on a island against a great DE and not have problems come your way. We should keep Smith in at FB all game as Tajh's body guard. No matter where he's needed he can be there to keep Tajh clean. That might hurt us using the TEs a bit bunt in all honesty they haven't been a huge part of our offense this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because is a great plan to diagram

you do know that it takes an o-lineman longer to develop,

Nov 25, 2013, 4:23 PM [ in reply to Translation: "We're gonna throw Brandon out there 1-on-1" ]

right ? it's easy to use athleticism 1st and technique 2nd when you are a speed rushing defensive end. not so much when you are an offensive lineman, especially a left tackle , who must pass pro and also run pro, slowing down, turning or pushing your guy, occasionally even pulling off, etc. come on. there are VERY few montoyas or some of the other elite level o-linemen, throughout history, that dominated against elite d-linemen, in college ball.

SMH. Coach, we have to do more than hope he'll "do better

How many times will Boyd be sacked Saturday?

Nov 26, 2013, 9:05 AM

the players? They ALL better step up this year! Last year, I emailed Pres. Barker, TDP and coach Swinney and I got a response from the first two. Coach Swinney didn't respond....huh

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm hoping he's just keeping his hand close to his chest.

Nov 25, 2013, 3:15 PM

It's the coaching staff's job to minimize our weaknesses, maximize our advantages and exploit favorable matchups.

Spurrier has done this much better than us ever since 2009. Morris has to improve his gameday coaching if we are going to win this one. Venebles has proven to be a good gameday coach this year. Morris has been a little like Rob Spence at times. Complicated system that breaks down and can't adjust to losing matchup battles.

We have the horses to beat SCAR. The COACHES have been our weakest link over the last 4 years against SCAR.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've been hesitant to make the Spence reference, but I've

Nov 25, 2013, 3:19 PM

definitely noticed it: Blow out bad teams and struggle mightily to find a play that works against good teams...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah he's definitely a better OC than Spence, but Chad

Nov 25, 2013, 3:21 PM

has some Spence-like tendencies.

You have to be careful using the "S-word" around here. :)

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Chad Morris is very fine OC.......y'all all need to back off

Nov 25, 2013, 7:27 PM

I would dare say he is more aware of what is needed than this entire board. If we had a staff of resurrected Knute Rockney, John Heisman, Vince Lombardi, and Paul Bryant, this board would not be satisfied. Y'all do remember that one of my heroes Coach Frank Howard had a losing record in this game........he still is the greatest person in our football history (pardon me Danny). Lighten up and exhale! We will be fine.

If we leave Thomas out there on an island we're f&$@ed. Period.

I agree. Game over.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Cooper comes up first in his mind as a blocking TE, why

Nov 25, 2013, 4:08 PM

don't we see more of him?? Did he get more than a few snaps in any game besides BC? Maybe I missed it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cooper gets a lot of snaps pretty much every game.***

Nov 25, 2013, 4:11 PM

Don't have the participation stat sheet handy, but I'd bet he's had about as many total snaps as Seckinger, just not nearly as many passes thrown his way.

Late update: O&W says the following today from Citadel game:

Tight End (5): Stanton Seckinger 37 (339), Sam Cooper 30 (305), Darrell Smith 15 (181), Jordan Leggett 10 (162), Collins Mauldin 1 (1)

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe my observation is off but I think I see Seckinger

Nov 25, 2013, 4:18 PM

a heck of a lot more lined up than I do Cooper. Not so sure on Smith, but lately I've seen more of Leggett. Certainly Seckinger gets the lion's share of ball action over all the others.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Problem is

Nov 25, 2013, 6:23 PM

Seckinger is an atrocious blocker. I bark at him every game as he misses so many blocks it is hard to count. He's decent in the passing game but when your TE can't block, you can't run.
Let's hope we find a better solution next year as he looks like a role player to me unless he gets MUCH stronger and tougher.

We have missed Allen and Ford immensely this year.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgtbn_110.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, and notice Morris mentioned him last in sequence

Nov 25, 2013, 7:02 PM

in answering the blocking question. That's why I chimed in about Cooper. I think he hasn't been 100% until lately, but why would Seckinger get more snaps than Cooper when he is healthy?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Problem is

Nov 25, 2013, 10:51 PM [ in reply to Problem is ]

I'd be really surprised if Seckinger weighs an ounce over 205. Just not a tight end.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seckinger is a Soph. and Legett is just a Freshman ...

Nov 25, 2013, 11:12 PM [ in reply to Problem is ]

Both will grow into the job as they mature.

Dwayne Allen and Brandon Ford were not the players we remember so fondly until they were Juniors and Seniors.

Nov 25, 2013, 4:36 PM

doubt about that. Will Clemson be up for it? If the CU team that came out against GA and GT shows up, this one won't be close but the ##### have had our number and this is usually all they have to play for is beating Clemson.

taking it personally

Nov 25, 2013, 5:31 PM

If I'm not mistaking Clemson secondary dropped four interception last year which would have given us the ball a whole lot more and would have stop sc drives. You can't hang that on the offense. just hope cu secondary can hold there on come Saturday. The front for needs pressure and stopped Davis from running it for a lot of yards and we got this game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our defense

Nov 25, 2013, 7:14 PM

Will win this game . Coots o-line is pretty good , Davis is a truly good back and the qbs do what they are told. That being said , they are far from as good or as potent as the weakazz schedule they have played would indicate. The SEC defensively has fallen off precipitously this season...coots are no different. 33-27 Tigers

Nov 25, 2013, 7:18 PM

I think we'll see Jay Jay in the back field on some passing plays. I don't think it was just because we were playing Citadel, that we saw him Saturday.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True it was a strategy to put McCullough in, the coaches

Nov 25, 2013, 8:27 PM

have admitted that with some cryptic statement about developing him for TE because he brings something different, blah blah. What is not clear is what their 'experiment' if focused on right now. But putting him in as a halfback for fullback makes me happy about Saturday, for sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Front Page Story: Morris on South Carolina: "We had all better take it personally"

Nov 25, 2013, 7:24 PM

Oh how badly I want to get hyped up and confident that we will win this game, but after 4 years of being "snake bitten", I just can't bring myself to completely get rid of this uneasy feeling. I certainly hope that all of this chatter in the interviews doesn't just turn out to be more empty talk. I truly wonder if these players and coaches have any inkling of an idea how hard it is living amongst this chicken trash for 365 days after a loss to them? After 4 years of their crap and all of their smack talk, there is absolutely, positively, no good excuses left for showing up lethargic and dropping number 5. Sorry Dabo, time to do like Coach Klein in "The Waterboy" and find your manhood again. Win the #### game!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Anyone else rather see JJ at HB than Brooks?

Nov 25, 2013, 8:23 PM

I already know I've seen Brooks fumble on multiple occasions and he isn't healthy. I'd rather go with a legitimate bruiser who is a relative unknown than an unhealthy guy who fumbles when healthy and is definitely not the "power" back they claimed all year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Anyone else rather see JJ at HB than Brooks?

Nov 25, 2013, 10:59 PM

Not to mention the fact that Brooks is apparently still playing at 185, his HS playing weight. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just haven't been able to see what all the exitement is about him as an RB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
