The Tennessee Volunteer Firework Show

Nov 30, 2017, 10:54 AM

I’m relating the CFB Soap Opera that is Tennessee football to a firework show. Man were there some awesome explosions:

Champions of Life – As the 2016 CFB Season wound down to a close, Butch Jones proclaimed his players were “Champions of Life” in response to questions of why they were unable to win a weak SEC East Division.

Garbage Can on the Sidelines – Who could have foreseen that a “turnover” garbage can that you got from Big Lots would turn out to be a cruel and ironic metaphor for your dumpster fire of a program. A garbage can…that was their big motivational idea.

Lying To and Blaming Media – When asked about an eye injury to Shy Tuttle, Head Coach Butch Jones told the media it was not due to player fights and then began criticizing them for asking questions about it: “We have to understand, what do we want out of our media? This place with the drama. These are kids and I think we all have children and we are all adults. Are we focused on Tennessee football?” – Butch Jones

Confirmed Players Fighting in Practice –Tennessee Defensive End Darrell Taylor suspended for fighting ANOTHER player (Trey Smith) in practice.

Blaming Players – After getting destroyed by UGA 41-0, Head Coach Butch Jones goes public on his coaching show questioning THEIR investment in the program. “Like I’ve told my players, if you’re not hurting, that’s a byproduct of your investment in this football program,” – Butch Jones

Decommitments – For the 2017 & 2018 Recruiting Classes, the Volunteers have had TWENTY FIVE decommits. Even I was not expecting a number that big when I began this journey. Sweet baby Jesus, that’s brutal.

Termination – After a 34-27 record (14-19 SEC) and an 0-6 start to the season, Tennessee fires Head Coach Butch Jones.

But like any good firework show, the grand finale is the best part. And boy Tennessee DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

COACHING SEARCH - 3 weeks & multiple candidates that did not pan out including: denied offers, a social media revolution, and publicly humiliated AD. Currently the Vols are fighting the Wolfpack for who hates Dave Doeren the least.

Thanks Tennessee, this has been just delightful.

You Forgot One

I live here in Knoxville and you forgot the "Five Star Hearts" slogan that Butch Jones used when talking about his players and the apparent lack of talent. I'm pretty sure that was last year just before he had the "Champions of Life" outburst.

BTW, we're heading to Cookeville, TN tonight for the Knoxville Catholic vs. Beech County High School state championship football game. My son, who is a freshman on Catholic's football team, will play for the title along with Cade. I'm feeling better about our chances with Cade as this freak show that is the UT football program lurches along every day. And, of course, I'll be sporting my Clemson pullover and toboggan along with a couple of other Clemson families at Catholic.

Go Tigers!!!

Actually the fans and Administration have screwed this pooch

That University is willing to pay a lot and that roster is still the second most talented in the deflated SEC East without that many seniors. With a decent coach, that team could win a lot of games.

Except they add Auburn to the schedule next year instead of LSU, and UF has a decent coach now. They also have a non conference game against West Virginia next year.

They have also lost a number of their most talented players (Jennings most recently) through dismissals or folks choosing to transfer.

Going to be very ugly next year for the Vols no matter who the coach is.

Oh, and they still play Alabama every year, unlike anyone else in the East.
