The next time anyone wants to post about how tough our new and improved OL will be

Sep 4, 2021, 11:38 PM

just please stop.

Every year, in the preseason we hear about how tough they are, how the unit will be better this time because they hang out together or grew beards together or did the world’s toughest strength program together all summer.

That’s cute, but I’m tired of hearing it.

I don’t know if it’s a talent issue or a coaching issue or a psychological issue or what. But our poor OL play is a chronic problem and our coaching staff from Dabo on down is responsible for it. They are paid among the highest salaries in college football and they need to fix it.

Until they do, it doesn’t really matter how great our overall talent level supposedly is.

How do we know they aren’t improved? They faced the best defense in the country tonight. They have 5 stars at every position on defense. They got thrown to the wolves tonight. Let’s see how they do week 3 and 4.

If we shouldn’t expect to compete against a top defense

Sep 4, 2021, 11:45 PM

then stop with all the “we too deep” stuff and talking about being a playoff team.

And if we shouldn’t expect to compete against top defenses, then what exactly are we doing paying our coaching staff the so much?

Enough excuses.

have you watched the last 3 years? we've made up for the lack of OL play with superb QB/WR play, but now it's coming home to roost. eventually, you have to get back to great OL play (ala Bama) to be great every year. we have not been great recruiting nor developing OL for a while. Just check the NFL drafts. Here's hoping to have a vector correct soon.

Yeah Bama has olinemen drafted in the first round almost every year. Not sure we've had even one drafted that high in the Dabo era. Even a guy like Carman, who was a super highly ranked recruit, just kind of went through the motions here and was drafted much lower than left tackles of his pedigree typically are. If we are signing 4 star guys and none of them ever develop into next level talent we can expect to eventually stop getting those players because they'll go somewhere that they can be coached to improve.

Exactly, so coaching is definitely most of the problem

Sep 4, 2021, 11:45 PM

Recruiting is also.

Right on the money
OL looked just like last year against OSU

I do feel we have some young talent and hopefully they will get developed. I do think McFadden needs to move back to RT. He looked terrible at LT tonight.

You’re an arrogant ###### bag, so it’s hard to take any of what you say serious.

You always look for weakness before you post with the most biting and venomous criticism.

What kind of person does that?

You don’t see a disturbing trend with our offensive line play?

Sep 4, 2021, 11:48 PM

This isn’t just about tonight.

I generally think our coaches are great, but you have to admit that offensive line recruiting, skill development, and play calling leaves a lot to be desired.

This is especially true for a program that claims to be elite.

Not sure that you should be questioning anybody on the football team's coaching staff, at all.

The people who do that are the people who like to improve.

If you want to be good at what you do, then you have to look at your own weakness to correct it.

It's easy to keep practicing something that you're good at. It's more fun that way.

If you're in a company who keeps doing the same thing over and over, you will likely get left behind.

If Dabo wants to remain at the top, he has to make adjustments in himself as the HC, his staff and players.

Other teams are adjusting and making the necessary changes so I hope Dabo does the same thing.

No way we're a legit playoff team until the OL

Looks like a lot of poor evals in the 2019 and 20 classes. Putnam, Trotter, Rayburn and Mayes are underwhelming. Our 2 starting tackles are 6’ 2”. You will not see that at Bama, OcryO St, UGA, etc. Gotta have a little more length there against top shelf D’s. On the plus side, the 3 freshmen have measurables and talent. Just need to grow up.

Re: The next time anyone wants to post about how tough our new and improved OL will be

Sep 4, 2021, 11:56 PM

Agreed. I’m tired of year after year hearing about how they did in the weight room. How they’re manning up.

I want to hear about scheme. I want to hear about technique. Our OL can’t stick in the league outside Shatley. We have fundamental issues, not strength issues. How many players ran through to DJ untouched? How many times did our olineman not even block a player? The simplest movement along the opposing line causes mass confusion and breakdown. It is time for real change. Dabo made some tough, but necessary job calls early on in his rise. It’ll be the end of “the best is yet to come” if he doesn’t take a look in the mirror and make some changes.

That was hard to watch. This could not have been a surprise to the coaches who watch the o-line practice against our defense. I thought we were recruiting better o-linemen, but it isn't showing. Dabo might have to look at a change in the staff. Hard to tell what we have at running back with so little blocking. Got a long way to go.

You misspelled our superior QB makes Trevor look like an 8th grade QB (or something to that effect).

I just can't believe that there seemed to be no desire to scramble for positive yards (besides that 2 yards gain out into the flats and out of bounds).

There's that and the 1st and goal around the 5 yard line and not one single rush attempt whatsoever. Like we had been down there and tried such unsuccessfully. I mean between the two we were making it easy for UGA.

Sep 5, 2021, 8:44 AM

It's like listening to politicians make empty promises.

Again if we are to believe the recruiting experts, then we should be pretty good.

I highly doubt Boston College has higher rated linemen than we do, but they're more effective running the football.

What I saw last night was a total inept play calling.

Re: The next time anyone wants to post about how tough our new and improved OL will be

Sep 5, 2021, 8:48 AM

You've honestly got to wonder what practices are like. The defense we put on the field last night must absolutely destroy the offense we put on the field last night in practice. Has our offense scored on our defense all summer in practice? How can there be such a wide disparity between the two units? Do the coaches make the defense play with 8 guys to give the offense a chance? So many questions?

Re: The next time anyone wants to post about how tough our new and improved OL will be

Sep 5, 2021, 9:17 AM

I know that I am very much in the minority but I am not sure that the line isn't better at least on a physicality stand point. I don't think that we could even say that we abandoned the run since that implies that at some point we tried to establish it.

Communication issues and DJ holding the ball too long at times seemed to be bigger problems to me. It is safe to say that the line is not elite, but I do think that as the line plays together through out the year that they will improve. Physically, you improve in the off season, and despite last night, I believe that they have. You improve your cohesiveness during the year with experience.

Georgia was a tough test to start the year. The rest of the regular season should be much easier, and we will see if we can have another chance at the end of the year.
