New potential KO strategy for discussion. Which is best??
Nov 2, 2015, 10:45 AM

This past weekend, our coaches appeared to be looking for a way to kick off that would minimize the possibility of a log return.
If we're going to play scared on KOs (and obviously we were) then here's the question:
- Is it better to squib a KO and give it to the other team at the 35.
- Or is it better to pooch the kick off and give it to the team at the 35.
- Or ... why not just KICK the thing OUT OF BOUNDS intentionally and give it to the other team at the 35?
Seriously ... we obviously stink at KO coverage.
If we don't trust our kick coverage, and we can't force a touchback consistently, then why not strategically kick it out of bounds? Why is it not a better option than the pooch and/or the squib?

It's better to just KO normal and hope they don't give up another TD. Giving the other team the ball around the 40 is just stupid imo.

Agreed, but we stopped doing it after the KO return TD

We obviously don trust our KO coverage team. The squibs and the pooch kicks prove it.
We appeared perfectly happy to settle for giving them the 35 in order to avoid the chance of giving the a TD.
Don't like it but facts are facts.
Honestly ... don't you cringe a little bit every time we kick off ?
I know I do.

although apparently not consistently, and if that's the case, Dabo needs to walk over to Riggs and find a soccer player who can.

Lakip is capable of kicking it 3 yards deep in the EZ, but

he isn't getting it through the EZ very often at all.
Honestly, when he get's it barely in the EZ I think it does two things.
1. It gives our coverage guys a false sense that they can let down and take the touchback.
2. It gives the returning team a chance to take advantage of our false security by unexpectedly deciding to bring the ball out.
We've given up several big returns to teams when the ball has been into the EZ.
Our coverage is just that bad.

I played soccer at Clemson for four years and I could kick a soccer ball a country mile. I still can, but a football...not so much.

I was thinking that, too. If you're going to squib it, just kick it OB.

This is the WORST facet of our game, and I, too, cringe on our kickoffs.
BUT, we have GOT to stop the pooch/squib garbage they tried during the second half against NCSU!
Kick to one side or the other, 'close down the field' - but back end coverage you have GOT TO STAY IN YOUR LANE - and every player needs to be the one who "wants to make the tackle"!
.... now I will get back to my 'day job'!

Kick it hard toward the corner of the endzone.

The worst that can happen is having it go out of bounds. The best that can happen is having the return guy bringing it out and catching him before he reaches the 15.
We just need to stop trying to kick it through the uprights on a frozen rope.

the ball at the 35 is not automatic. The other team has the option of penalizing you five yards and making you re-kick.

Good point just kick OB.
Or how bout teaching them to stay in their lanes. It only takes one guy to screw it up.
