You can have all the explosive O’s you but since 1959..

Nov 7, 2021, 4:53 PM

I’ve been a fan of Clemson‘s staunch D’s and this year’s D unit has been fairly eye-opening & nail-biting too to say the least (rather scary & heart-attack inducing in fact)..but boy have they produced considering how long time-wise their O has abandoned them out there (well, Pitt & NCst nicked them a bit)..

but our very best D teams that come to mind the quickest to me were the 1981 D vs Huskers on Jan 1, 1982 for 1st Natty..

and that load of 4th & 5th year D talent called the Power Rangers who shut down Bama’s “best to ever play” team according to ESPN, 44-16 and go 15&0.

Saying, that glorious last goal-line stand where #11 & buddies chased down the great Tuo to give ball back to TL & Crew to close it down has to be the winner all time in my book.

Yours?

Our 81 defense was the best but that was different football. I have no doubt that with all the talent they had in 81 they could been successful even in today's world of spread offenses. Our defense this year is just ok and give up too many big plays, like last night, but has come through a couple of times this year like last night.

This year's had a chance before the injuries. At least numbers wise.

/^^^\ This ~~!

Even with injuries and the best "D" players in the nation on the bench, still getting the job done.

Clearly coach V knows his stuff - but I sure miss 4 down

I suspect he is reacting to the game and teams that abused us the past couple of years by throwing it all over the place. With 3 down, he can drop 8 etc.
4 down to me - is better against the run and allows us to pocket the QB better. Also allows pure pass rushers to simply go after the QB. Sure, we are getting some pressure, but not like we had been.
It also seems like we are not getting interceptions or passes defended, even when we drop 8. Not sure if it is because of the less pressure or just dropping into zone,.
Anyway, they know more than me, but if I get a vote (which I don’t) - I want to go back to 4 down and dominate the line of scrimmage.

2016 defense that had Jake Bentley check himself

out of the game.

But we weren’t “that much better than us [UofSuCk] or better than us at all”

There's something in these hills.
