People don’t value freedom anymore, they value “safety”. The question should’ve been why weren’t they forced to take something and still test positive for covid, that’s what they basically are saying

You (not specifically but in general) also have the freedom to remove your nose from people's business to keep it further away from their fist.

Our country is becoming more and more accepting of people sticking their noses around looking for something to tell others they are doing incorrectly.

Then people line up with pitch forks if a fist makes contact with a nose, even if the person's fist was just moving around trying to learn a new dance move.

Most folks don't know the difference between can/could and should.

People say the government *can't* co something because of "muh freedoms" The government can't mandate a shot. Or the Government can't tax gas, beer, property. Even things like the government can't take my arms (guns).

This is incorrect. Gubbermint darn well can. Even for firearms the government has the ability to amend the constitutions. The 2nd can change and or go away - doubt it but technically it is an option and law love technicalities.

What folks must talk about is where or not the government *should* do something. In 99% it really shouldn't. Period.

But this difference is often lost in the political debate.

Where would we be today if the founding fathers had said freedom doesn't matter, we'll just continue to be under the mercy of tyranny. There's a reason for the saying give me liberty or give me death and don't tread on me.

The tradeoff between *safety & security* and freedom (state of nature) is government 101.

I mean we generally trade our freedom to poop in someone else beer so that other can't poop in our beer. But jurisdictions are different and thus Willy B exist for pooping in other peoples beer.

A good basic read for those interested...

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/locke-political/

As for "consent to the government"

The most direct reading of Locke’s political philosophy finds the concept of consent playing a central role. His analysis begins with individuals in a state of nature where they are not subject to a common legitimate authority with the power to legislate or adjudicate disputes. From this natural state of freedom and independence, Locke stresses individual consent as the mechanism by which political societies are created and individuals join those societies. While there are of course some general obligations and rights that all people have from the law of nature, special obligations come about only when we voluntarily undertake them. Locke clearly states that one can only become a full member of society by an act of express consent (Two Treatises 2.122). The literature on Locke’s theory of consent tends to focus on how Locke does or does not successfully answer the following objection: few people have actually consented to their governments so no, or almost no, governments are actually legitimate. This conclusion is problematic since it is clearly contrary to Locke’s intention.

Locke’s most obvious solution to this problem is his doctrine of tacit consent. Simply by walking along the highways of a country a person gives tacit consent to the government and agrees to obey it while living in its territory. This, Locke thinks, explains why resident aliens have an obligation to obey the laws of the state where they reside, though only while they live there. Inheriting property creates an even stronger bond, since the original owner of the property permanently put the property under the jurisdiction of the commonwealth. Children, when they accept the property of their parents, consent to the jurisdiction of the commonwealth over that property (Two Treatises 2.120).

Pre-pandemic, I was a libertarian who believed that

Oct 22, 2021, 11:24 AM [ in reply to Re: Because “muh freedoms!”*** ]

the government was mostly bad, and that people are generally good and will do the right thing for their fellow man.

The pandemic changed all of that for me. I saw a significant portion of our society focus only on themselves, thumbing their noses at the thought of considering others and doing something for the common good.

I still think the government mostly stinks, but I have a lot less faith in others to be compassionate and selfless now.

Cheers Judge

I would say that I am a classical, bow-tie conservative in the tradition of Buckley... and gasp, I am an academic too.

Now I say I am libertarian but not the western, rancher (kook) style because those that now claim to be "conservative" and anything but nowadays in the political sphere. However, I still have to accommodate that while I believe government *should not* I disagree with those that say the government cant. Sometimes you need rational problem solving to be addressed by a centralized entity. That, can be the government if nothing else exist.

I am very binary in this, either government should act based on the police power (and generally left to the state) or no act. No in between. I believe in unfunded mandates because government should not *bribe* to accomplish politician goals. I am a fan of home-rule and that localities can and should be basically as crazy as they wish but the regulations should evaporate as it moves up.

I shake my head at some of the "banning mandates" actions some places are taking because that is government interference too, sigh.

Wouldn't have kept Ngata (or anyone else, for that matter) from testing positive. It's an indisputable fact that none of the vaccines will prevent you from catching or spreading COVID. What they do, however, is minimize the severity of the symptoms in most people (excepting those with other conditions).

I don't know that they're not mandated or even highly encouraged, but either way, age likely has something to do with it if they're not mandated.

Re: Why are players not mandated for vaccinations...

Oct 22, 2021, 1:39 PM [ in reply to Re: Why are players not mandated for vaccinations... ]

Sorry but you have this wrong.

A vaccination CAN prevent infection, but it doesn't mean a person given the right circumstances(exposure level, health susceptibilities, etc) CAN'T become infected.

A vaccine for the vast majority is a preventative of infection. The virus is immediately rejected from the system because the immune system is charged and ready for the attack. For the remaining people the vaccine has already helped the body develop as much immunity and defenses as possible but it isn't quite enough. Though, for the average healthy individual this is enough to mitigate bad reactions to the infection. But for the very small percentage it's still not enough and they have bad reaction to the virus and wind up hospitalized. Finally, the worst case scenario is the body simply is incapable even with medical treatment of fighting the virus successfully.

We do know the very real facts that NOT being vaccinated is the worst possible way to combat Covid 19.

This has nothing to do with freedoms, rights, or over-reach... just plain simple medical truths. Vaccines work, people survive, and continue to live.

The University requires weekly (students) and bi-weekly (employees) testing for all – regardless of vaccination status.

Students enrolled at main campus, CU-ICAR and Greenville ONE
Regardless of vaccination status, residential and non-residential students enrolled in classes on main campus and at CU-ICAR are required to submit a negative COVID-19 test within every seven days – either by testing onsite with Rymedi or uploading documentation in the COVID-19 Test Result Upload Tool.

**Students do not need to be tested within 90 days of previous infection with proper information regarding positive test result.

People don’t care about freedom, they care about what they are told by the news. Hence the comments in here saying the lack of critical thinking equals not getting vaccinated, even though a vaccinated person can catch and spread covid. If a person doesn’t have say over their own body they have say over nothing. Never thought people could get so scared over something they would hand over 100% control over to the biggest idiots in our country who just happen to be in the government

Oct 22, 2021, 1:28 PM

No public school mandates vaccines. My wife is a teacher and has had many families come through who have said no to any vaccines. A school CANNOT force students to get vaccinated.

A school will say "You NEED to get vaccinated before entering Kindergarten." But they cannot prevent a student from going to school if their parent refuse to get them vaccinated.
