DJ: Immense Pressure

Sep 28, 2021, 7:33 PM

Think about the pressure that DJ is under right now...this young man is only 5 months past being a teenager. I’ve read so many rude things on this board about him it’s almost ridiculous. No, he has not played well. No, he has not met expectations. No, he didn’t jump in and replace TL without missing a beat. And no, he hasn’t played anywhere close to the 2 games he did last year. But the constant criticism is NOT going to help him.

NIL comes up as a possible reason for his lack of focus. Maybe, who knows? But if you want to blame someone for NIL, blame the NCAA, the Supreme Court, the Governor of California but don’t blame DJ. All he did was what every single one of us would have done and that was grab an opportunity that was dangled in front of him. And, right now, he is probably questioning that choice as I’m sure he has more pressure from his agent to turn this around else lose some lucrative endorsements. And speaking of agents, I’m sure DJ’s is behind the clothes. He’s trying to make DJ a “brand” – like many before him – and standout clothes are a good way to do that.

Let’s not forget he is still a student. And Dabo doesn’t allow his players to blow off the academic side. Sophomore classes at Clemson are not easy. I don’t know what his major is but he’s probably still taking the basics – English, history, math, some kind of science, maybe a foreign language…none
are easy and there is constant pressure to succeed in the classroom.

The pressure of performing on the field is almost overwhelming. Some seem to believe the future of Clemson football is dependent on him. And he’s getting it every time he looks at a computer, picks up his phone, or walks outside his dorm. Some have said he doesn’t fit Clemson’s system. I don’t know but I haven’t seen much of a system on the field so far but if that’s the case then re-design the system. My gosh, the entire offense is almost new. And speaking of new, I sure hope he’s getting some dedicated coaching during the week. It looks to me like there are a pile of assistant coaches on the field during pre-games. I hope at least 1 or 2 of these are 100% dedicated to just him.

And then there are the very few who suggested he go back to California. All I can say about that is that the Clemson I know and love is a welcoming place. If you make the grade either academically or athletically or both to become a student, then you are part of the Clemson family. No one should tell him to go back to California.

He is under more pressure from every direction than most experience in a lifetime. I suppose the bottom line is maybe a few words of support, encouragement, understanding might go a long way in helping him feel like he can be what we all hope he will be. There is a reason why Dabo is 100% behind him. As fans, we should try to embrace Dabo’s decision.

GO TIGERS!

It's the education of a young man.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problems of this offense go far

Sep 28, 2021, 7:43 PM

Beyond DJ. The body language of the entire offense speaks volumes. At this point I'm blaming the one making $2 million a year to run it. Getting paid $2 million and all we needed was an average offense. With our defense an average offense would have us contending for title. Heck, maybe even a bad offense would have done the trick.
But a record breaking inept offense that has caused our elite defense to wear down and get injured from so much time on the field. This is all on Tony Elliot at this point.
He should have seen in spring and made adjustments.

Wow got to respect that information I’ve criticized him on this board but no more I’m going to let Dabo and company do their job

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You actually haven’t read much rude stuff about him because

Sep 28, 2021, 7:46 PM

Roughly 95% of the posts in here about his woes so far have been fairly pinned on our coaching staff and our O-Line’s performance. No need to try to make the board sound worse to make your post sound better.

DJ may or may not be the next big thing but he deserves better development and play calling than he has gotten so far.

Great post. Anyone telling him to go back to Cali is either a coot or should turn in their Clemson fandom and submit an application to be a coot. They are looking for help and might even pay more than the local gas station, but probably not.

Here's what you need to know about the NIL and DJU

Sep 28, 2021, 8:00 PM

He signed with Vayner Sports. Any discussions with sponsors are handled almost exclusively by Vayner. If any decisions need to be made, they go next to his dad. Literally 98% of the work is being handled by Vayner.

DJ could not have a better situation with NIL than what he set up for himself.

The mere suggestion that DJ has a lack of focus is obviously reaching for ideas and/or trying to push a narrative.....And it needs to stop.

How about start with 9 new starters on Offense, and the O Line may be the worst we've seen in 25 years. Getting them coached up is priority #1.

Re: DJ: Immense Pressure

Sep 28, 2021, 8:06 PM

Absolutely right. Whoever is telling him to “go back to California” is most likely a redneck idiot who doesn’t represent Clemson values. This is a kid (a big kid, granted) who is trying his best. Do you think he wants to lose? Clemson is not a ruthless NFL factory program that uses and discards kids like Alabama. Winning at all costs is not the goal for us. This kid has a ton of weight on his shoulders. If he has to sit a game to let him clear his head while TP takes over that’s fine. Get off the kid’s back and let him enjoy his Clemson experience while he figures out what he’s doing wrong.

I haven't always seen eye to eye with you on every topic, but I agree DJ is under a tremendous amount of pressure. I really think the NIL is adding a lot of pressure to probably many players out there.
I would like to tell DJ to continue to put in the hard work and to be the best person he can be, and everything else will work out (one way or another). I, and many Tiger fans, are behind both DJ and the whole Tiger team.
Good luck, and Go Tigers!!! Beat BC!!!

I’m not disagreeing with you. Most people probably do agree.

Sep 28, 2021, 8:31 PM

But you don’t come to a school like Clemson and follow in the footsteps of Boyd, Watson, and TL and think there is not going to be enormous pressure!

The goal every year is to win the ACC and participate in the playoffs.

Let’s also be honest and point out that he is making a lot of money thanks to NIL with a couple of very large brand names in Bojangles and Dr Pepper And when you are doing that you better perform! Playing badly doesn’t buy you sympathy, especially not in today’s environment with NIL and our expectations based on talent and history.

And we also need to admit DJ is different. He’s been running his mouth a lot with this nickname and the way he dresses. His commitment video was a Hollywood production. He carries himself and models himself a lot like Cam Newton. When that is your image and you promote that image you better produce because when you don’t there is going to be a lot of criticism. Deservedly so!

Re: I’m not disagreeing with you. Most people probably do agree.

Sep 29, 2021, 5:18 AM

He has zero in common with Cam Newton, he has always liked to wear different styled clothes it’s his style. The kid is grounded in putting Jesus 1st in his life & that’s the main reason he chose Clemson.

For the 1st tine in his life his parents have separated & they were his foundation. I do believe that’s a lot of what is going on with his focus, a hurting heart can affect all of us.

Let’s pray for DJ in all areas trusting God to move in healing his heart & giving him courage & clarity of thought.

Please don’t compare him to Cam Newton, DJ is not looking for attention as he has always been shy & reserved, but he does like a certain style. His focus is not on anything outside of football, the coaches have repeated no one has worked harder than DJ studying tape etc.

Whether he stays the starter or not we need to stand behind him, this kid has incredible potential when it all comes together & he has incredible character, he’s just really young & big.

DJ doesn’t run his mouth period! The fact he got excited after run plays pumped everybody on the team up because he doesn’t show emotion.

Sep 29, 2021, 6:06 AM

From seeing him play, and from some of the comments, it seems to me that DJ is not a born leader. Playing qb in todays world, you have to be. You have to get the .L. on track and aware. You have to correct RBs in blocking, positioning anf the whole rpo thing. He also has to take control of the WRs. They need to be on his page, not theirs. He doesnt seem to do any of this. If its "his" team, he needs to stamp it. TL, DW, Boyd, even some of the other guys have been seen doing this and DJ doesnt. He always need to understand that when the ball is hiked, plans go out the window. You need to adapt. You need to be "connected" to your teammates, game clock, and where the pressure is.

Sep 29, 2021, 6:07 AM [ in reply to Re: I’m not disagreeing with you. Most people probably do agree. ]

The separation of his parents is a big deal to DJ, I would think. Since our culture being what it is, most of us do not think it would be a traumatic, life-changing event. But for DJ, pretty sure it would be, considering his life is faith based. He’ll be alright eventually, but he is human and still a young fella and a long way from his previous home. So many factors working against him. He will grow and learn from this a lot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am confident he is giving it his all.

Sep 28, 2021, 8:38 PM

I don’t like reading the attacks on his character or attitude. He seems to be very mature. He has worked his tail off. He has represented our team well.

It would be one thing if he were acting like a jerk or being disrespectful or unsportsmanlike. But he hasn’t done any of those things.

As you said, he is under a ton of pressure. It’s the coaches’ job to help him with the right play calls as well as the mental part of the game.

I believe DJ will figure it out. Last year’s success he had wasn’t a fluke.

Sep 28, 2021, 9:37 PM

Maybe I haven’t read enough on tigernet, but I just haven’t seen all these so called personal attacks on DJ. I mean, I’ve seen people say he struggles in this or that on the field, but is he so delicate that it’s affecting him that much? If so, I would say his chances of ever playing in the NFL are zero since he’s technically one year away from being eligible. Can you imagine if he were drafted by a New York team and struggled there.

Geez folks , people have been talking football for 100 years in Clemson and I doubt that’s going to stop. Again, if your talking football issues on the field, it’s fair game . Especially if your making the money he is

In hopes of looking like superfans, make up a scenario that they come in and white knight.

There’s exceptions to every rule, but the athletes have been treated fairly and the coaches have gotten the treatment they deserve and should be able to handle too. If anything the athletes should feel extra supported because most of us think the coaches have let them down.

Agreed. DJ, from all appearances, seems to be the model student athlete. Coaches say he’s a hard worker and nothing but humility is what he exudes. So far, his athletic performance has been rough, but I hope he pulls it together.

Re: DJ: Immense Pressure

Sep 28, 2021, 10:22 PM

There are morons in every Social Media outlet there is. There are no Clemson coaches or any other D1 coaches on T-Net chat so take this all with the grain of salt it deserves.

DJ is our guy as long as Dabo. Elliott and Streeter ##### he's our guy. If that were to change we still think DJ's upside is huge so he will be back in the mix when he's ready.

No idea what the impact of his NIL deal is in terms of pressure, he brought that on himself, he signed the deal no one made him. So don't blame the NCAA or anyone else for that. That is part of the carzy world we live in.

God has a plan for DJ...

Yep.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My 2 cents

Sep 29, 2021, 12:24 AM

DJ has some very serious flaws that cannot be fixed during the season. He needs a dedicated offseason to correct his footwork, accuracy and touch issues.

However, the problem goes beyond those. It seems he has trouble processing what's happening on the field. You know, "the speed of the game" is very fast to him. This is something that cannot be fixed. It will remain a weakness.

I had a bad feeling about DJ during spring and summer practice because Dabo was not throwing compliments his way. IIRC, not too long before the UGA game, Dabo used the word "finally" when describing DJ's performance in practice that day.

Lastly, it seems DJ isn't a natural leader that other players rally around. This isn't a character flaw; it's his personality type.

Sure enough, the circumstances put a lot of pressure on DJ. But the bottom line is he's not the guy we thought he was. It's really that simple.

The O-line being complete junk compounds the problem but DJ flat out misses throws when there is no pressure.

Buckle up guys because we are going to lose 2-3 more games this season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is the NIL

Sep 29, 2021, 12:43 AM

I don’t blame DJ for it … just calling it out .

I said it would hurt college football … the beginning of the end of the good ole days …

I did not think it would start with Clemson …

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It is the NIL

Sep 29, 2021, 12:56 AM

I definitely think handing college athletes millions and millions of dollars before they’ve done anything on the field is probably not helping the situation.

And I wonder if it is why the team just seems to not be together. This guy makes zero dollars, this guy makes 1 million. This O-lineman gets blasted for underperforming yet he’s thinking to himself the QB is horrible and getting big money. So kiss my fat rear end is probably what he’s thinking. You think that’s not causing issues. It would in 50 year old adults so why wouldn’t it in 19 year old men?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It is the NIL

Sep 29, 2021, 1:07 AM

Then that is a leadership issue, because pretty much every other Top 25 team is in the same place as we are from a NIL standpoint. Skill position players are going to get the most endorsements and the o-line will get much less, whether it’s salary or headlines, that’s just the way it goes. If our O-line is jealous of the backfield’s NIL deal and there is a fractured locker room, then that’s in the coaches and players in the room, because every other school also has to deal with the NIL distraction too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It is the NIL

Sep 29, 2021, 4:59 AM

And I do not know if that has anything to do with anything on the team or not. I really haven’t paid a whole of attention to this NIL situation as it just seemed to be another cancer slowly eating away at college football among about 10 other diseases.

I , as I’m sure you do as well, know how people operate and whether it’s jealousy or anger it seems this could definitely be something that may arise as a issue more so when things aren’t going well. Winning covers up a lot, and losing brings about negative thoughts often covered up by the joy of succeeding at something.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 29, 2021, 6:09 AM [ in reply to It is the NIL ]

I agree with you on the NIL…both points.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Blaming NIL is a lazy cop out

Sep 29, 2021, 12:39 PM [ in reply to It is the NIL ]

There is no evidence for that whatsoever. Some of you guys hate NIL so much you want to blame it for everything.
