act like uga was some big win (anyone whos watched them play all year knows otherwise) along with 7-5 texas..fact is lsus big wins in the sec are a product of them being ranked high and beating each other later in the year giving the illusion they played somebody.

That is the propaganda that they try, and do make FB dummies like Paul Dumbfk believe, and they will do or say anything possible to get other FB dimmies to believe the BS they say. Paul Dumbfk I do believe that he will seriously pull on one, and that's bc he is a real true cootsucker!!!

Look at like this, LSU beat Bama 46-41 when LSU was ranked #2, and #1 now. And Bama isn't as good as the #1 Bama team that we just dismantled in the NC game last year. Personally, I think that OSU will be the toughest game for us in the playoffs, and if we beat OSU, and LSU beats OU, we WILL win Back to back NC's with a 30-0 record. What excuses will they make then, and rest assured there will be excuse after excuse until they make folks puke in public!!!

What all these analysts miss, for whatever reason, is the arbitrariness of the rankings. Who's to say that, e.g., a healthy 9-3 Auburn is better than a healthy 9-4 UVA? Or that 8-4 USC and OkSU are better than 8-4 VaTech? Or that offensively challenged UF at 10-2 merits its top-10 ranking over, say, 10-2 Notre Dame, 12-1 Memphis, 10-2 Minnesota, 12-1 Boise State, or even AppState 12-1? Because "they haven't played anybody?" But nobody knows that for sure because there are no on-field results to back up any such claims. It's arbitrary.
The alleged weakness of our schedule is driven exclusively by these rankings that are largely not the result of on-field play of individual teams, but of persistent perceptions about the strength of *conferences.*
Dabo said it well: this year the ACC is not top-heavy, but it has a lot of teams--good teams--bunched in the middle. How many *elite* teams does the SEC have? IMO, onfield results indicated that it has 1. How many does B1G have? 1. How many in the ACC? 1. The rest of those conferences have good teams variously bunched in the middle. None of the rest are *elite,* based on onfield results. Some of them are even very good.
By the same reasoning, we can't say objectively that any of the three elite teams, Clemson, LSU, and Ohio State, is *unequivocally* "the best," or "the most balanced," or whatever. We can have our opinions, and Vegas has to put out its betting line. And it's fun to make predictions and good-naturedly tout your team, and do the X's and O's.
But the objectivity that a lot of these analysts seem to attribute to their analyses is just plain stupid. And arrogant. I'm talking to you, Marcus Spears (and a fair number of your colleagues, too).

As you know, Spears played at LSU, so we know where his loyalties lie. This is one of the problems with many of these "journalists". They are told to be loyal to their schools when playing and they simply cannot work it out of their systems by the time they get behind a mic. Herbstreit may be one of the best at objectivity. I do think Todd Blackledge is also excellent. But too many ex-jocks just wear their school colors on their sleeves. And when it comes to any of the ex-SEC guys, they just constantly tout the conference. Just part of the college football landscape. Won't change until they stop putting homers in the booth/studio or until they get more like Herbie and Todd.

Cuthbert ---- Excellent analysis. You put into words much better than I could have expressed it. So much of the rankings are based on perception. Schedules are made years in advance so we never know how good or how bad a team will be in 5 - 10 years down the road.

He isn't particularly focused on NCAA sports and he took his rhetoric from other ESPiN talking heads like Speares. Smith just got woke about a year ago.

Clemson's opponents may not be considered strong but Clemson is consistently beating them about as badly as can be done, even while playing lots of reserves.

I realize Stephen A has somewhat changed his ways, regarding Clemson, but I still remember his “Top 5 Teams in College Football “ from last year...

Being treated like we've been a "fluke" for four years...
Dec 10, 2019, 3:56 PM

...PLUS not being given the benefit of the doubt even though our 4 year stretch plus 28-0 streak plus the DEFENDING AND UNDEFEATED NATIONAL CHAMPS is the reason why we are annoyed with the media. I get it, you don't really know for sure because our schedule wasn't the toughest but daggum, give us the benefit of the doubt. Treat us like you treated Alabama...we just want consistency across the board...give us the benefit of the doubt. In 2016 we went up against the "greatest defense" in the history of college football. Then, last year we beat the snot out of the "greatest" Alabama team EVER.

The toughest opponent that Clemson played against this season took place on April 6th during the Spring Game. Then again, it's the toughest opponent in the entire nation regardless of who we face. I guess they have to learn the hard way. The only team that can beat Clemson is CLEMSON. PERIOD! NO IFs ANDs or BUTs about it! GO TIGERS!

The point I would have loved Stephen A to make is are you really telling me that if (very plausibly) Oklahoma hadn't lost to K State and UGA hadn't lost to the chickens that there wouldn't be most of ESPN arguing that it should be OSU, LSU, Oklahoma, and UGA. That's all you'd be hearing.
