IMG Decommitment Dance

I smell a rat with these decommitments. I suspect that someone at (or connected to) IMG is advising these guys to decommit for the possibility of big NIL deals if they shop around. With all of the coaching changes, there will be a lot of focus on team performance and school boosters will be foaming at the mouth.
With the likes of the Texas deal and some of the other high-dollar arrangements (Bo Jangles, etc), these players may likely come out of their decommitment with a large financial windfall.
I would think that their reason for going to IMG was for success in football which would lead to fame and fortune - before last year, it was more important to be on a winning team and get good coaching and recognition. Now they may have an opportunity to do that plus rent themselves out to the highest bidder.

None that I know about, but NIL is a growing business. This year's coaching changes stand to create some momentum in the growth of NIL and cause the practice to become more deeply pervasive and entrenched throughout the team position hierarchy/structure. If Texas is willing to give O-linemen $50,000/year, surely there will be some DBs and D-linemen getting paid soon.

Yes, but school boosters are now making donations to charities and the money is funneled to the players for use of their NIL in advertising for the charity (see the Texas deal to O-linemen at $50k/year). When the boosters are paying the money, it's not quite the same as the school, but it's darn close and begs for collusion to be involved between the athletic department, the school and the boosters.

In the case of IMG, I don't - I said "I smell a rat", which in #### Tracy language means I'm suspicious.
In the case of Texas, it's obvious.... they didn't put that deal together with simultaneous lightning bolts.

Legitimate deals?
Almost none.
Less illegal slush fund payments from boosters with businesses?
Probably quite a few.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are getting NIL bags being offered. It'll be very interesting to see if all 3 go to the same place.

Lemme make sure I understand:
A few kids have decommitted because of the possibilities of big NIL deals if they shop around. They just figured this out within the past 10 days.
Mmmkay. Got it.

Correction, someone at IMG is being paid to get these kids away from Clemson before a defensive name has been named at Clemson with signing day so close. It's really hard to think that Dabo didn't see this coming!!!

You're probably right. The problem is that it isn't a rat.

It is the sport that we all have followed for decades. This is what it is now. And IMG is a school focused on getting kids scholarships to play football...why wouldn't their structure incorporate optimizing the revenue streams of their kids going to college? That's what the sport is now. They would be silly to stand on high ground NOW. Better they show how they are getting kids paid immediately. It's will probably continue to help them recruit to their program.
Unless something changes quickly, the sport has become grotesque. NFL at least has a salary cap, the purity of truly being a professional sports league, and contracts. College is making a complete mockery of the "student-athlete" concept. This Texas program that pays Lineman $50k a year for their NIL associated with "charities" makes a complete mockery of the charity...it's a mere tool to win football games. Kids go wherever they want and can leave whenever they want.
The trick for me is decoupling from "the sport". I definitely don't have it in me to walk away from supporting Dabo's Clemson team. Everything else is pretty easy...although I'll be following Cincy to see if they can make it a game (not sure I'll watch, but it's the only game I'll follow).

Good point.... you make a sound argument about IMG doing what's best for their students. I can see where they would want to justify the expense of IMG tuition.... or at least make it seem like the tuition is worth the price and that future benefits will surpass the cost of tuition.
If this is true, I wonder if the counseling is a cohesive school activity or if (as AllOrange said) it's an individual acting on his own. If it's the latter acting as a rogue, I would still call it a rat.
When you think about it, greasing the palm of an insider at many of these football factory schools could make a fellow some money..... wonder how many HS football coaches are influenced (paid) by CFB boosters and in turn influence the prospect (not paid)..... that probably isn't illegal and the player doesn't get a cut (unless he gets a NIL deal).
