Yes Tillman was wrong, but step down from your ivory tower

Jan 15, 2015, 1:12 PM

Our ancestors held some of the same beliefs and elected the man into office knowing what he stood for. What can be said about Tillman can be said of most South Carolians at the time. Its a sad part of our history that we cannot change. So if you want to continue to bash the man, at least take the ownership of your forefathers that were no better. It was a different time back then and we can easily judge from 2015, but to disassociate from a man that is a cornerstone of the university simply bc he was a product of his time is insane. Why stop at Tillman? Why not change your last name? Honor the man for the good and use the bad as a history lesson of where WE have came as a society.

My ancestors owned slaves. I am not proud of that but I do admit it. The difference is that this man instigated and lead riots to kill black people. He caught a black senator and executed him for being above his station. Not all of the people of SC went to those extremes or even during that time would agree with it. As for getting elected, he freely admits in his speeches later on that he stuffed ballot boxes and got the blacks of the state disenfranchised.

Do you absolve anyone because they grew up in a different time? Anti Semitism was rampant during Hitlers time...is what he did ok because of that? Hitler did a lot of good things too. Because of him the space program in the US got a huge boost after the war. Should we name a building after him in Cape Canaveral? It is just a building. They have their names changed all the time.

He was an extremist but he acted out on

Jan 15, 2015, 1:33 PM

The feelings and fears of many at that time. Doesnt make it ok.

And sadly Huntsville has a building named after a nazi.

We should probably go after Sumter county, and the nickname Gamecock as well considering Thomas Sumter offered payment in slaves to enlisted men, had a plantation full of slaves, and was part of hunting down escapee's early in his career..

Of course we could go on and on about most of the people from this time that we remember in history books... Sure it was a dark mark on this great country. No doubt about it, but the PC crowd is just getting out of hand..

I think many of us would be surprised to know our ancestors also acted on those feelings.

Difference is, our ancestors wont politicians, didn't make public speeches, etc.

I'm pretty sure many of our ancestors also killed folks because of their skin color.

But, guess it's easier to read about Tillman than it is to find out all our great great grandfather did.

NorthAl....

Mostly poor arguments. You don't know how most South Carolina people or our ancestors thought. And, it is absurd to say most were just like him.

I will agree we should not just focus on the bad things he did, but recognize he did good. The building is not named after him for his bad deeds, but his good deeds contributions. Just as streets and monuments are named after Washington, Lincoln, Grant and others... and they were not saints either. They can be criticized for their bad deeds, actions, or inactions also.

Are the people who are calling for the name change standing up and also demanding changes for things that are obviously wrong and should be changed and which are devisive like MLK day (no other single American that has ever lived has a day and holiday that is soley theirs - let's have a great American's day and let MLK be one of those), Black History Month (where is Irish, Italian, German, English history month?), Miss Black America contest(this is ok with me, but try a Miss White America contest), offensive RAP songs, etc. - HYPOCRITS!

You can study their writings, their behaviours, etc

Jan 15, 2015, 2:08 PM

And find out exactly how and what they thought. If I wrote about Taco Bell and its documented that I went to Taco Bell by others, 100 years from now anyone could summarize that I liked Taco Bell.

So it's settled...we rename it Taco Bell hall then? Will this help with the no Chick-Fil-A issue?

He was an extreme example of his times. Very bad times. The question isn't should we ignore what he did then, the question is do you choose to honor the man NOW.

He did no good...

Jan 15, 2015, 3:26 PM

By the way two of the most famous abolishinists were 2 sisters from an aristocratic Charleston family. So just drop it, Tillman was an evil person. It doesn't matter what time period you live in, that doesn't excuse from being a murderer. The 2 abolishinist sisters were in the same time period, and they chose to fight for the abolishment of slavery. Tillman he chose to be apart of lynch mobs, and as political strategy pitted poor white people against poor black people.
