Can definitely see why the ratings are down from 2019.

except rating don’t even count Canadian viewers and they now count outside the home views like bars unlike 2019 so the numbers are actually even worse than they look.

have to stop using as an excuse is that the the Finals aren't "The Lakers vs the Bulls".
There are 30 franchises (I think?) in the NBA, and if no one cares about your playoffs unless it is three or four teams from major markets then your league has a problem.

In the NBA, it's not so much about the teams themselves

as it is the star power. Giannis is one of the best players in the league, but I don't perceive him as being as transcendent into the culture as players like Lebron, Durant, Curry, etc. The players drive the interest more than the names on the front of the jersey. I know my personal following of the NBA my entire life has been like this...I followed Jordan and "rooted" for the Bulls back in the day, not giving a rip about the team/city itself. Then I've followed Lebron similarly.
In other sports, it matters more in terms of market size of the cities represented in the playoffs, but I think the NBA is a little different there.

Yes, the NBA is often referred to as "player-driven", but

that doesn't really change what I said.
So I've said many times on Tigernet that I've pretty-much lost interest in all sporting events. But when I was a "fan", any good college football or NFL game would be something I'd want to watch. Any NFL playoff game would be enjoyable, and obviously the Super Bowl. It didn't matter if it was Indianapolis vs Minnesota. But I hear a lot that for fans to care about the NBA playoffs, the right teams or players have to be in it. I think that's an issue. It means most of their league is boring and uninteresting, save for a few players and a handful of loyal fanbases.

I don't disagree, but I also don't think it's new.

It's always been an "issue" for the NBA compared to the other leagues. You think people cared about Cavs/Nuggets in the 80s? Nah, they were watching the Lakers and Celtics.
And other leagues have issues compared to the NBA. MLB and NFL both suffer with promoting stars, relative to the NBA. In the NFL, because players aren't as recognizable, and with MLB, because the game isn't very individualistic.

I think it's pretty simple. TV ratings are

becoming a more and more archaic way of measuring interest. How many people under 30 even watch TV anymore? It's not like it used to be.
It makes sense that the NBA, which probably has, on average, the youngest fan base of any of the major sports by a significant margin, would suffer the most from the changing media landscape.
Check the NBA's social media engagements, and I bet it blows the other leagues out of the water. Just different demographics.
That's not to say it's not a concern for the NBA. TV ad revenue is still a big factor for these leagues. All the sports leagues are dealing with changes here, but the NBA would have to be feeling it the most.

I have to assume this is because they had black lives matter on the court and because LeBron didn’t stand up for Hong Kong.
