Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 8:48 AM

His complacency speaks volumes. What a naive thing to say. "We had a bad half." More like a failed seven years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think his point is valid...whatever his job status is...

Mar 15, 2017, 8:51 AM

The game last night definitely should not and did not have any effect on it.

Re: I think his point is valid...whatever his job status is...

Mar 15, 2017, 8:53 AM

you don't think a loss, as ugly as last night's, to Oakland, will influence DRad'a decision any?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly, I hope not

Mar 15, 2017, 8:59 AM

I'm on record as saying I never call for a coach's firing and also that if it were my decision I would not retain Brownell as coach. It's a fine line, but one I'm comfortable drawing.

With that said, last night, while ugly, should not be any factor in the decision. It was a BAD half, for sure. But if our AD thinks he is the right man for the job before the game I can't see how that half should change anyone's mind. That would be entirely too reactive in my estimation. And certainly if our AD was already planning on making a change, then that half would do nothing to dissuade him from that either.

I have zero problem with what our coach said. It is his job to be a stabilizing force in the program and show stability and consistency until such time as he is not our coach, and as such his comments make perfect sense.

Absolutely not.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For me, it isn't JUST about last night..

Mar 15, 2017, 9:03 AM [ in reply to I think his point is valid...whatever his job status is... ]

It's blowing an 18 point with 8 minutes to go against GT in the ACC Tournament. It's losing to Pitt in 2014 up 5 with 5 seconds to go. It's losing to Gardner-Webb, by 23 to Coastal Carolina. So many late game mistakes this season. It's like watching a replay for 7 years. Enough is enough. He's a mid-major coach that needs to coach at the mid-major level.

Re: For me, it isn't JUST about last night..

Mar 15, 2017, 9:46 AM

You are SO right. So many blown leads. For years the BBall team has been an embarrassment. In the past, we would at least be in the middle of the pack. Now we're in the bottom! Brownell has got to go. Who was the fool who let Shaka Smart get away???

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 8:51 AM

Yeah that was more than a bad half. That was a team giving up. There is no way he can feel as comfortable about his job as he says he is

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 8:56 AM

Losing is one thing. Watching a tiger team give up is disgraceful. That reflects on the coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell is perfectly comfortable with getting fired or

Mar 15, 2017, 8:57 AM [ in reply to Re: Brownell is Unbelievable ]

staying on. He feels no pressure or sense of urgency. He makes a lifetime's worth of money either way.

I think I saw him jawing at DRad in the tunnel last night after the game - something along the lines of "wutchu gone do punk? Fire me?" and then he threw his back and laughed maniacally.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He is set either way*****

Mar 15, 2017, 8:59 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes he is...so no tears should be shed if our AD decides to

Mar 15, 2017, 9:11 AM

bring in someone else.
This should be handled just as we would if BB were a division manager working for our company.
Go Tigers!

Mar 15, 2017, 8:59 AM [ in reply to Re: Brownell is Unbelievable ]

I honestly think DRad has already told him he will be back next year. There's no way he could feel as "comfortable" otherwise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

While possible

Mar 15, 2017, 9:01 AM

I think another option exists where we are simply seeing his personality and leadership at play. Lets say he personally is nervous and uneasy about his job status, I still see him as the sort of coach and person who internalizes that rather than discussing it publicly and causing further instability if he is retained.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If that truly is how narrow a scope he has on the program,

Mar 15, 2017, 9:00 AM

he should be fired on sheer stupidity alone. Does he have to reminded of 7 years of futility? Or did this just happen last night in the 2nd half? Whatever. I've already invested too much into this with my anger.

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 9:01 AM

Dude he doesn't really care if he gets fired at this point he is prolly ready to get out of dodge.
I'm sure he wanted to exceed and tried his best to be a good Coach.
But he seems like a guy that would take all this criticism from the fan base and hold a grudge.
I'm sure it wouldn't hurt his feelings too much to get his 3.5 million and head on out.
He would find another job at a D2 or mid major making 200k and live like a big dog.

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 9:11 AM

I really don't know how Thom can say he's ok with what cbb said after the game last night. I don't care whether or not a person "internalizes" anything - something as bad as last night has to spark some reaction even in the "introverts".

I'm not even sure how he could even speak. He should have come out and said he really didn't have anything he can say. something, anything other than what his smug nose but said.

Any decent person would have stated right after the game that I'm not the person for this team, I quit. You are who you are - we hired a mid major coach with a mid major attitude and coaching style.

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 9:20 AM

Yep all he needs to be saying is I'm sorry to everyone because I have failed.
I gave it my all but I'm not a ACC coach.
If he has any integrity at all he has to be feeling like
he has let CLEMSON down.
Because at the end of the day right now Clemson Basketball ball is a product of him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are assuming he thinks he can't fix this

Mar 15, 2017, 9:22 AM

That's the difference.

I imagine he believes this program is still being built and he can turn this around.

We may disagree, but I WANT any coach in any sport here to think they are capable and to publicly be a stabilizing force by acting like it.

Again, this is a different conversation from whether the AD believes this and will retain him.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's cool, we disagree

Mar 15, 2017, 9:20 AM [ in reply to Re: Brownell is Unbelievable ]

He's not going to quit, and nor should he. Quitting would be quitting on his players who he recruited and has promised to coach for as long as he is allowed. And let's be honest, many here would crucify him for this. We'd be hearing "Oh, the going got rough and he just quit on his team."

Again, I'm not defending him as a coach. I'm on record as saying that while I don't call for coach's to be fired I would not retain him were I the AD. But I also know that if he is back next year as he no doubt wants to be, then his comments are in the program's best interest. The ONLY chance he has for future success at Clemson is stability through the upcoming recruiting season and that doesn't come from him publicly flogging himself.

Again, I know you see it differently, but I don't blame him for what he said and don't see his comments as smug as I see a different (from you) motivation and reasoning behind them.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

of course he has to say that....what else would you say

Mar 15, 2017, 9:23 AM

I expect to get fired or yes I'm on shaky ground now but then I win and I'm not. You can't run a program that way as a coach and plus you'll drive yourself crazy with each win and loss. I wouldn't retain him either. The program after seven years isn't remotely close to where we'd hope it would be by this point.

Mar 15, 2017, 9:34 AM [ in reply to That's cool, we disagree ]

What you guys are saying is all correct imo, BEFORE last night happened. Not his first year, nor his 5th, but after 7 years and I've run through 6 recruiting cycles, I would say he'd be a stand up guy if he quit.

However, given my opinions, I really do think he could have at least deflected any questions and came to the podium and told everyone, "there's nothing I have to say".

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 9:42 AM

People on here are such f-ing idiots. What the hell do you expect him to say? That he has done a really bad job? That he has had a bad 7 years? Keep in mind that he does in fact want to keep his job.

I want him gone too, but the stupidity on here is insane.

Re: Brownell is Unbelievable

Mar 15, 2017, 9:49 AM

No, not stupid. I see coaches all the time say, this one's on me. Heck, Monte came out and apologized to the fans after a bad game with Wright State (stand up guy) ! They say all the time it's my fault and I'll get it fixed.

Let's replay the Dabo presser after 70-33 and see how he reacted. You really going to tell me he said "I'm comfortable where we're at and it was a bad half". Don't think so.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_pickem_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure he really does anymore. He seems to be more

Mar 15, 2017, 1:29 PM [ in reply to Re: Brownell is Unbelievable ]

angling to take the 3.5MM and walk. He really doesn't seem to care one way or the other about actual results.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What do you expect him to say?!

Mar 15, 2017, 10:08 AM

"Y'all hired the wrong guy, gave him a ridiculous contract extension, and now your stuck with him. See you suckers next year."
