May be time to scrap the computer thingy from the BCS.

Oct 28, 2012, 9:26 PM

FSU ranked #21? Okayyyyyy.

Oh and another thing, scar jumps FSU in the BCS after beating Tenn by three this week while FSU beats Duke by, what, 41?

At some point common sense has to have more of a role in this, right?

Oh, and one other minor detail, FSU has one loss and Scar

Oct 28, 2012, 9:27 PM

has two.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh, but Scar's losses were to high quality SEC teams

Oct 28, 2012, 9:42 PM

While FSU lost to a mere ACC team. One ACC loss obviously = at least 3 SEC losses. What garbage!

Losing to NC State is a lot worse than losing to LSU in the fake Death Valley and Florida at the swamp.

Yes, but it's just ONE VERSUS TWO! Doesn't that matter?***

To a certain extent, yes. Let me clarify, i think FSU at this point should be ranked ahead of SUC, but i think SUC pre-Lattimore disaster is probably a better team. To me, it's not totally egregious just because i think losing on the road to 2 top ten teams (especially having to play them back to back) is more forgivable than losing one to a pretty underwhelming NC State team.

Well, maybe so, but

Wouldn't you say that Losing one game on the road to FSU is better than being undefeated in the Big Least? I would, there is no way Louisville is better than Clemson.

We would be Louisville by 35

SCAR better than FSU? Please! I told a friend of mine last

Oct 28, 2012, 11:20 PM [ in reply to Re: Oh, but Scar's losses were to high quality SEC teams ]

week that the Scar pass defense was poor, and would be exposed by Tennessee just like ECU did to them earlier in the year. Scar has one solid win, UGa. None of the other SEC teams they played prior to Tennessee can/could throw the football in the ocean from the end of the pier.

FSU's defense is very good, and very fast. They would shut down Scar, even with ML, who really had not been the same as he was before his injury last year. FSU's offense has enough weapons to put points on the board against Scar.

Scar has struggled on the road all year, and will lose to Clemson, so it all will work itself out in the long run. The best news is, we only have one more year of the BS known as the BCS.

once again, NCSt really needed to beat UNC

Oct 28, 2012, 10:07 PM [ in reply to Oh, but Scar's losses were to high quality SEC teams ]

that would've helped everybody who played them

It's sad to say but our conference is 'weak' Clemson would have to go undefeated , beat top teams in non conference play and have other competitive teams in major conferences have 1 loss..........
I will say this.... A lot of good teams , especially this year besides maybe Alabama would slip up and lose 1 to an average acc team....
It actually takes a very talented team to beat up on weak schools then turn around and beat a power house...weak conference has its advantages but also disadvantages....Clemson has some of the best talent in the country...no doubt

Our conference may be weak, but it brings an automatic bid. If we don't make a bcs game, it won't be because we didn't have a chance; it'll be because we didn't handle business in tallahassee.

The good news is that Clemson is still on the upswing.

Not scrap it, but relegate it to the position it should have been in from the start. If you look at the BCS, it took the two major polls as the main component. With the two polls, there's the chance that they'll disagree on a couple of teams and you'll end up with a tie, so you need some other component.

The problem is that they've always had the other component as a fixed part of the formula. Anytime that other component upset a consensus in the polls, that other component would end up getting tweaked to try to prevent it from upsetting a consensus between the polls.

It's clear that the bcs formula should just be an average of the human poll rankings with the computer portion only brought in in case of a tie.

Why they refuse to do this, I'll never know.

When the computers were brought into the BCS equation,

Oct 28, 2012, 11:23 PM

the first thought I had was: Ut Oh...Although humans wrote the programs, they were going to rely too doggone much on machines, which don't have a "feel" for the game...that is, years experience of knowledge about school's programs, which the coaches and sports writers, for the most part, do. For years rankings were determined by the AP. Now IMO they should be determined by an average of the AP and coaches...and leave the d@mn machines out....

I'm not entirely sure about that. The coaches don't really have enough time to pay attention to other teams, and the AP poll has been known exacerbate certain regional biases. I like the idea of having a third-party safeguard that can take the emotion out of it and provide rankings that are based more on numbers, i just wish that the BCS system would still factor in the AP poll in some capacity. I know that even the parameters of the BCS computer system can be considered subjective, but imho, it's still better than having 65 homers like Josh Kendall hashing out the postseason.

writers and coaches are almost always close in their rankings, which I credit to their "feel" for the game, if I can use that term loosely. And Clemson often fares well in those two polls. Today, for example, we are No. 9 in both, which I realize is moot. I just like polls based on human perceptions, which although including a heavily biased vote or so, usually average out into fair ranking.
