Sunday sermon: The view from the mountaintop

Sep 8, 2013, 9:52 AM

There's a pleasant sense of righteousness in the world this morning.

We're a Top 5 team. The team we beat to get here reinforces our standing by beating a Top 10 team of their own. The heathens who mocked us in the past now sing our praise.

To borrow a song title, it's a d@mn good day to be a Clemson Tiger ... as if there was ever a bad day to do so.

Even nicer, after all the years in the wilderness, after that long, painful climb to the summit, we can actually pause and savor the view. See the ravine, where we lost to Wake Forest? How about that swampy spot where North Carolina and Boston College in the same season? Remember those days?

When "pulling a Clemson" actually meant something?

Good. As we savor the sweet, cooling breezes of the mountains, never forget the smothering fumes of those faltering days. Don't dwell on them ... but don't forget them.

We do still have this bit of unfinished business...

There are many who would like nothing better than to see the Sons of Clemson slip from this summit, careen and cartwheel back into the abyss and lie in a broken heap at the bottom...having to resume the Sisyphean task of pushing our hearts and hopes back up the mountain.

Like the Children of Israel, it took us a full generation to escape the wilderness and ascend into the Promised Land. A lot of us just wouldn't have the heart to do it again.

So, as you savor the scenery, keep sharpening your swords. Look ahead to our next battle. See how our foes are already looking at the name Clemson with a combination of awe and dread.

That is how it should be. That is how it once was.

That is how it will remain for as long as we make it so.

Let there be no sense of accomplishment. Not yet. It took this much work just to get to the mountain top. How much more do you imagine remains to stay here.

There is still a lot to be done, and desperate hands will be trying to wrest the prize away at every step. Be vigilant, be strong ... be Tigers.

We worked beyond measure to get back. Let no one turn in waste or weakness now.

Do we REALLY want to see this again in Raleigh?

NC State awaits, and I can promise you they are adding as many seam routes to their offense as humanly possible. They are looking for any angle, any snare to send us skittering back down into the pit.

They did it to Florida State last year. Don't think they can't do it to us, if we allow it.

I'm hoping ... no, I'm PRAYING ... that the Sons of Clemson view our lofty station as a conquest, not a birthright. We must fight to remain, and we shall. We must crush those who would take our spot, and we shall.

Sigh! Another week, another dog!

We must make certain that the name Clemson is respected, and the Sons of Clemson are feared on the field.

And we shall.

So, this week rest, but remember.

And be ready for the battles to come.
