Best rental car you've ever had?

Jul 9, 2015, 9:24 AM

When I had my Land Rover Discovery, and because it was a land rover and stayed in the shop, I would get all kind of loaners from the Land Rover dealer. I had a supercharged Jag SJ with like 385 HP that was pretty sweet. If you turned the traction control off and power braked it, it would smoke the tires. I also had a couple Mercedes C series that were pretty nice to drive.

From a rental company, I got a brand new Volvo S60 last year when they didn't have any other cars and upgraded me. One of my favorites oddly was a Mazda M3 sport. That car was pretty fun to drive.

Nissan Sentra with less than 2000 miles.

Jul 9, 2015, 9:26 AM

Also the worst car I've ever driven.

This is correct.

Jul 9, 2015, 9:36 AM

I have really only spent significant time driving 5 cars. Really only 4 because I didn't do all that much learning in my Dad's truck. There was the Lumina, Malibu, and the current Camry. I rarely drive other folks' vehicles.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I got a Chevy Impala a few years back that was nice

Jul 9, 2015, 9:28 AM

but I was driving a Nissan Sentra at the time, so my views are pretty skewed.

Agreed on the S60

Jul 9, 2015, 9:35 AM

I was in south Florida on 9/14/01. Flights were cancelled, of course, and Hertz had upgraded me to the Volvo that Monday. Between no one leaving their house and tropical storm Gabrielle blowing across Florida, I95 was completely empty. I had that thing pegged for most of that drive. It was comfortable, quiet, and fast.

Because I liked it so much, I bought a 1999 S80. That thing was the biggest piece of shit I have ever owned.

lulz, parents owned a 99 S80 and they can kangfirm

After I got back to the hotel I googled how much that thing

Jul 9, 2015, 9:40 AM [ in reply to Agreed on the S60 ]

cost. It was a nice car, but with the options it had it was pushing $40K. That seemed pretty pricey to me.

But at the rental cost of a midsize, I drove it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2002 Ford Mustang

Jul 9, 2015, 9:36 AM

all out of intermediate sizes, Mustang was only thing on lot

I did some nasty things to that car, not CS02 nasty, but I guarantee it needed a brake job

TL:DR = Decked out '15 Suburban in Colorado this past Feb

Jul 9, 2015, 9:40 AM

My cuz had reserved a rental w/ his corporate emerald club (or whatever it's called w/ Enterprise), with which we could just go pick any car off the lot...it was snowing and expected to snow thru the night all the way to Breck (brah), AND there were 5 dudes (of which I was the 2nd smallest, IB4 dink jokes).

by the time w/ got there, not only were there NO 4WD vehicles, there was nothing that'd fit 5 growned ### men and our bags/gear.

In a not surprising power move, my cuz big-dicked the 5'-2" 'store' manager into 'finding*' a suburban, and then spreading out the additional cost over the rest of the night rentals...

*turns out, once the weather forecasts hit, they pulled several larger 4WD's from the pool of available vehicles, and kept them to rent for an additional premium that night....cars that would've otherwise been available immediately to us.

Jul 9, 2015, 10:36 AM

Would like to drive, but not buy afterwards.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep. Flew into San Antonio, wife had reserved an Altima.

Jul 9, 2015, 11:01 AM

Asked the Hertz lady if they had anything else and they apparently had an "exotic" section. Multiple Mercs and performance cars. She said she had a bright orange hemi Challenger and I said "sold".

Jag sedan about 15 years ago.

Jul 9, 2015, 10:50 AM

I had rented a full size for 3 days at PHL to return to BWI. They brought out a Ford Fiesta. After a bit of hell raising, the manager gave me the Jag, since it needed to get closer to Washington. Spent a day on the Eastern Shore visiting customers.

BTW - It's difficult to implement price increases when you pull up to your customers plant in a Jag.

Biggest surprise was Nissan Versa...

Jul 9, 2015, 12:33 PM

Had a choice of a van, suv or versa. All my gear surprisingly fit in the Versa after back seats were folded flat.
I wanted to save some fuel money so I opted for the Versa. Much better experience than I expected.

Kia Soul, was like that too, fun to drive and much quicker than the versa.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had a Versa once at the same place that gave me a Volvo

Jul 9, 2015, 1:17 PM

It had about 20K miles on it, and had apparently been driven mostly by teenagers prior to me getting it. There was nothing on that vehicle that didn't squeal or rattle. It was a complete POS.
