There are a lot of people who don't hold their hand over their heart because its their intention to show respect. since the pledge was written by and communicates some socialist principles. I'm certainly not saying everyone who says the pledge is a socialist. I'm just saying that some people who don't have other intentions besides disrespect.

Jan 18, 2015, 7:50 PM

There are areas in the country that aren't as conservative or "pro miliatary" as the south. My 3 best friends in school were from boston, long island, and philadelphia, and none of them understood the significance of the hand over the heart. They knew some people did it during the national anthem, they just didn't know the meaning.

Call it ignorance, but the fact is, there are over 300 million people in this country. Not all of them are going to be as educated about military history, or as conscience of military respect as you are. I'm sure those who don't place their hearts aren't blatantly showing disrespect for servicemen. Maybe they just don't know the practice. Geez, you ARE aware that not everybody thinks like you, right?

my parents didn't teach me to hold my hand over my heart during the National Anthem (I never have, that's a Pledge of Allegiance thing as someone else mentions), but they sure taught me to respect it EVERY time it is heard, at a game, or at home on TV. It's the National Anthem no matter how it's delivered.

I try not to be around when it's shown in TV, but if it is, I remove my hat, be silent, and stand if possible.

Re: I was joking. It's all in good fun. Fun huh?

Jan 18, 2015, 9:43 PM

Fun, huh?
Why don't you visit some of the few remaining Veterans
who went in D-Day, and ask them how fun it was.
And how fun the Battle of the Bulge was...
My DAD still had nightmares about it at 75 years old.

And ask those who fought the Japanese how fun that was...

And ask those who spent time in POW camps about their fun activities...
I knew one over 6ft, who was about 200 lbs and came home on a stretcher under at 85 lbs.

And ask those who fought the Viet Cong and those that have fought in the
Middle East, how fun that was, too...
And be sure and ask those family members whose spouse, parent, or child didn't
come home, how fun that was for them...

So much fun....yeah...
You, and the couple of others, in this thread, are right... we take it serious.
Your (plural) comments show your maturity levels.
Apparently, you haven't been around long enough to watch how the attitude in the country has deteriorated. Were you even required to read Patrick Henry's address in your History? So many
important topics have been removed from curriculum today. We had to supplement our
kids studies, so they had a better understanding, since so many texts today are strictly social topics, and govt agendas.
And one more thought, I too was in marching band, and we played the National Anthem before every
fb game...I thought many times, while playing, what my Dad went through. I still have chill bumps when listening knowing behind the music, what it means to so many Veterans, and their families.
Put yourself in another person's shoes before saying, "we take it too serious". There's a daahhmm good reason to be serious. You need to reflect, on a regular basis, what those Veterans have personally sacrificed for you. Have you thanked any of them?
GO TIGERS!!!

There's something in these hills.

To me this is quite simple

Jan 18, 2015, 8:41 PM

I love my country and respect all those whose efforts have provided me with the freedoms I have.
But along with recognizing those freedoms comes recognizing that others show their respect and support in different ways and it's silly to think you can know what's going through anyone else's head in those moments.

As an example I do not feel particularly comfortabl pledging allegiance to a flag as I find the whole concept strange. I am an American and respect my country and wish to do what I can to see it properly prosper, but my allegiance belongs on a much smaller scale. I hold allegiance to my friends, my family, those I love and cherish. I also hold allegiance to the concept of right and wrong which, were I honest, would occasionally make pledging allegiance to the U.S. problematic. So I do with great reverence and respect honor my country, and I am more appreciative than I can express of the men and women who have served and built our nation, but were you to see me without my hand across my chest you'd judge otherwise.

Btw this was typed on a phone and autocorrect probably screwed something up

here is the deal

Jan 18, 2015, 9:43 PM

Stand your ### up, take ur hat off, shut the hell up, honor the men and and women who have died so you can watch ur games, live in the free country u live in, have the opinions u have, worship how u want, do what the hell u want to do, signed the 45 KIA and 197 WIA Marines I served with in 20 years in the Crotch through Desert Storm, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan . Memo to everyone, there are people that have DIED so u can have this discussion.
Jesus people, there is more to life than Democrat vs. Republican and Yankee vs. Dixie. We are free because of grunts who have said #### YOU to everyone else.

Who cares? Find something more important to get worked up

Jan 18, 2015, 9:49 PM

about.

BTW, those soldiers also fought for the freedom for people to do whatever the h3ll they want during the anthem. If they want to keep their hat on, hands to their sides, talk on their phone, write a post on T-Net, they can. That's why I find it hilarious and ironic when military guys get so heated over it and DEMAND respect from everyone else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yep, because we know what it is like

Jan 18, 2015, 10:01 PM

To shoot a son of a ##### in the chest who laid an IED, we have held a Marines hand as he died, we have put nothing but a torso into a body bag because arms and legs and head were blown off, yep, there it is brother. You cant stand up, shut up, and take your hat off, #### you, period, Cpl Lucas Pyeatt says hi. I put his torso in a body bag. Hes a better man than any ####### who talks during the Anthem. And by the way, I vote Democrat but I served and dont give a #### about Yankee Dixie or Dem Repub BS. I give a #### about being free because I know the fee thats paid.

Good for you. Thanks for your service.

I do take my hat off when I'm at an event where the anthem is played, but I've never put my hand over my heart. There's no disrespect intended there, it's just a personal choice.

However, your post exemplifies why I find it difficult to give many recent veterans much more than a "thanks for your service." You come off as a jerk when you demand that I respect you with a post like yours.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

a jerk?

Jan 18, 2015, 10:12 PM

Thank you man. The boys will keep doing the dirty work that they get sent to do. Meanwhile I will watch people who live free and comfortable because of those grunts who will do what the masses dont have the guts to do. Enjoy your life, man. I tip my hat to you. We dont want any bennies....especially from the comfortable masses who think its a video game.

Yes, jerk fits pretty well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

maybe so, but if you have seen what I have seen

Jan 18, 2015, 10:21 PM

You would get it. Less than 1 percent of this nation sign a check to this nation for up to their life. That means something to me because I put a lot of them in body bags. They were the best people I have ever known so if we are jerks, I will take that. I am glad I served beside those jerks. They were my boys. Have a great life man.

Re: maybe so, but if you have seen what I have seen

Jan 18, 2015, 10:29 PM

Perhaps, but I work with a few veterans who have a much better attitude than you do when it comes to things like this. I have a lot of respect for them because they understand that this is truly a free country, and they don't force everyone else to conform to their views.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guarantee they are not Marine Corps Infantry

Jan 18, 2015, 10:39 PM

Who saw and lived the nastiest #### in combat. Id bet u my last 10 paychecks they are not. Enjoy your life man. We did it for you, period. Look up Sangin, Afghanistan 3d Battalion 5th Marines, you will see our reality. It aint a video game, it aint the news, it was the nastiest combat since Vietnam and if u dont get that, whatever. Im #### glad I was with my boys who DID get it. They were there.

That doesn't mean you should act like an a$$hole when you spot someone who dares to not put their hand over their heart during the anthem.

http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm

United States Code Title 36
§301. National anthem

Designation. — The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.

Conduct During Playing — During rendition of the national anthem —
when the flag is displayed —
individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note;
members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and
all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and
when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well, it turns out you are correct!

Jan 19, 2015, 9:35 AM

though as Snopes points out, the code is pretty outdated (almost no one wears a hat anymore), and the norm has shifted away from folks actually feeling any real compulsion to do this now.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't really know anything about

Jan 18, 2015, 11:26 PM

that growing up. I was always taught to put my hand over my heart during the pledge, but not our national anthem. I started doing it after seeing some do it during games and such but there is a large crowd that doesn't do it...even in the south, here at Clemson.

What's the correlation between sporting events and honoring those that have served?

Re: Hate seeing coaches and players on the sidelines

I can't figure out when people started putting their hands over their hearts for the National Anthem. Put your hand over your heart for the Pledge of Allegiance. Stand with your arms at your sides for the National Anthem.

I don't think it's really a big deal. You're just making it one, everybody is entitled to do what they want. Just because they didn't have their hands over their heart doesn't mean they don't respect the soilders who died for us. That's just my opinion though.
