We Still Have Venables Defensive Playbook....

Dec 7, 2021, 9:09 AM

Dabo will most likely hire a DC that will follow much of VB's scheme with his own wrinkles.

We'll be fine

VB had 1000 schemes

it changed with every game. His scheme was his mind. No way you replace that

Do we really have fans with this level of understanding? While there is a base D and playbook the secret sauce is BV's ability to adapt the D every game attacking the O plus giving different looks to the offense. Having the playbook would be little help plus any D coordinator worth his salt would have his own methods. I would shudder to think the new DC would need to rely on the playbook of the previous coordinator.

When Chad Morris Left, his playbook was tweaked...

And we won 2 natty's and 6 cfb appearances.

It seems we have fans that have elevated Venables to a deity.

Those two championship were won b/c of that defense

primarily that defensive line. When our line didnt have CW42, Dex, AB, and Cle when haven't sniffed another trophy. We've been to the CFP but those championships are built on that D-Line not allow any runs up the middle and allow our defense to play free b/c we had the ability to rush 4. UGA is only in this thing this year b/c their D-line is elite. Their offense is okay but pretty pedestrian compared to teams in years past. But their DLine is better than everyone else's. Thats where Clemson was and hopefully will get back to.

That defense gave up 45 in the first championship game and 31 in the next. We won our first championship bc of Deshaun and our offense. The 2018 game was an all out blowout on both sides of the ball. Venables was special but we'll be fine.

Booby Fischer OR Boris Spassky, and I STILL wouldn't be anything but average playing Chess. :(

BV had developed so many "Nuances" to his base defense and had all those years of experience guiding him on when to blitz, HOW to blitz, when to go into primary pass coverage, etc. In other words, he had seen a lot, and learned a lot.

Any one we bring in, assuming they have had their own experiences, will know what has worked best for THEM. Brent's way was not the only way. It in fact took a long time to learn, for players. A lot of schools have four and five star players come in and make immediate impacts on defense. Although that did happen under Venables from time to time, it was a rarity. (Mukuba is a rarity, even among rarities.) Much more often, they have to share playing time, if they are lucky. If they are not quick studys, they could get lost on the depth chart.

My hope for us on defense is that we do get an outside hire for DC, who brings a system that is easier to learn for the new players. AND, they have to not only BE a good recruiter, they have to love the process. Because, todays kids can spot a phony a mile away, unless they are blinded by money or potential NFL dreams. That will be the toughest thing about Venables to replace. No potential recruit ever had to wonder about BV being genuine, or loving what he was doing. I have never seen an assistant coach more passionate about their job. I just hope that Dabo can find us another one with that kind of drive.

yeah..i don't think its that easy...you remember how everyon

even the assistant defensive coaches stared in anticipation of the call was going to be pre-snap...its because it came from Brent's head and what he saw on the field. Brent knew each team and their tendencies and probably knew what they were calling based on them telegraphing their signals. Then he woudl call the play. That is the vacuum that is left by a dynamite def. signal caller. There will be an adjustment period so get ready.
