Come Monday

Jul 16, 2021, 3:00 PM

I'll be the proud owner of a teenager, so, like, where in the blue hell did the last 13 years go?

Anyway, turns out, he's basically the last kid in his class without a phone, which makes me question where some parental priorities are, but I guess that's where the world is now. Anyway, just ordered a refurb unlocked iPhone X, the one I've been rocking since it came out at the end of 2017 (and still basically the same performance-wise as when I got it--they finally started building phones that last more than 2 years).

What's a good, barebones service to put him on for calling and texting, and probably minimal data usage? I have ATT and the wife has Verizon, and both of those are like $40/month to add a line, which just seems excessive for a kid that doesn't really leave the house without us, doesn't drive, etc.

I thought about the jounge last weekend

Jul 16, 2021, 3:56 PM

and y'all's disdain for Buffett. It was almost an anti-jounge Friday, when I found my self listening to Buffett and drinking a Naturday.

I can appreciate that.

I appreciate being anti establishment as much as I appreciate hating JB.

Whatever service you get, make it the worst there is

Jul 16, 2021, 3:03 PM

He'll get so tired of having dropped calls, texts that don't go through etc, he'll just quit using the phone.

If it makes him feel any better when he complains about how old the phone is, tell him you kinda know someone who works in technology and is still using an Iphone 7 and has no plans to ever upgrade it unless it dies (That person is me, BTW).

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds like this is what you're looking for...

I added my phone to her plan 2 years ago. Hard to beat the price ($20 for her, $15 for me, plus Data usage).

I actually finally got that for my wife

Jul 16, 2021, 3:56 PM

Circa 2006 or so whenever they were the only unlimited talk time carrier. It saved me a fortune. If cell phones do cause tumors, my wife is defying the odds by being upright today.

Woah, you got old. How quickly can we turn this

Jul 16, 2021, 3:07 PM

into a "What age did your kids get phones" thread. I've found that the parents I perceive as generally more intelligent have held out longer.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So that makes me the most intelligent parent in 7th grade.

Jul 16, 2021, 3:15 PM

I feel like I kinda already knew this, but confirmation is nice.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, we waited until he was about halfway through 6th grade

Jul 16, 2021, 3:24 PM [ in reply to Woah, you got old. How quickly can we turn this ]

thinking that he would need it for after school etc...It's pretty locked down with the Verizon family app thing.

Then Covid hit, and he used it to chat with friends, which seemed to help, so....

Now it's just to text and talk to his small circle of friends and the occasional girl.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A thing I don't have a memory of is at what point I would

Jul 16, 2021, 3:50 PM

actually call friends on the phone in my child hood. Toss in that most folks don't have a home phone anymore maybe there is SOME justification for kids having a phone, but probably not.

At the same time, my 7 year old nephew will get on his Ipad, face time his cousin and they'll play dang Fortnite for as long as allowed. I found this impressive.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We ended up just adding Jr to ours when we re-upped, but

Jul 16, 2021, 3:10 PM

I also looked into a pre-paid option with whatever the walmart one is called (straight talk?).

But that was a few years ago.

I will tell you that we have ATT and it SUCKS that we can't throttle Son-Of before he burns up all our data, which he has done a couple of times. They don't have a way to cap usage by phone line, at least not without paying extra.

It'll be cheaper soon to get a family plan especially if you need 4+ lines.

Jul 16, 2021, 3:47 PM

15 year old daughter of has now lost one phone (in a landfill in Costa Rica according to find my iPhone when the battery finally died) and destroyed one, so she has a double hand me down 5s. Actual line after school one day this past spring….”dad, I’m the only person in my grade with a home button”.

at $15 a month. Just note that's not unlimited data, but at something like 4gb a month.

Have you looked at Google Fi ?

Jul 16, 2021, 4:43 PM

$20 a month for talk and text. $10 per gig of data. They lease space on other's towers for coverage. You can check their map for wherever you live to see if you have good coverage. Great option if you are mostly a WiFi data user.

Pay the year and 4GB/mth is 15 bucks. Unlimited i.d only I think. Runs on t mobile network. I used it for a year with no problem. 5G included too if the phone has it.
