So how many kids really applied as Fall 2018 freshmen?
Feb 12, 2018, 10:36 PM

|
And how many got in? I have read that anywhere from 26,000 - 40,000 kids applied and that 3000-5000 were accepted. The 2017 Princeton Review states that 23,000 applied and 51% were accepted in 2016.
Have these numbers changed a bunch due to football championship publicity?
Thanks in advance for any knowledgeable answers.

I believe that your numbers are correct. I heard the same thing at a IPTAY prowl and growl meeting last year.

26,244 freshman applied (a 12% increase over 2016)

to Clemson last year and “more than 3,650” freshman enrolled. That’s according to this article:
http://newsstand.clemson.edu/mediarelations/clemson-welcomes-class-of-2021/
According to multiple college sites, Clemson’s acceptance rate is approximately 51%.
That would mean the numbers would look something like this:
Applied: 26,244 Accepted: approximately 13,400 Enrolled: “more than” 3,650
I don’t know the numbers for 2018 (they probably won’t release that until right before the fall semester based on when they released 2017 numbers) but I think this gives you an idea.

Do you have a source for this data? I’m not doubting you,

but if accurate, we dropped our acceptance rate from about a reported 51% in 2017 to about 40% in 2018. That would be a huge change. So too would be the percentage of accepted appplicants that actually enrolled relative to the number accepted:
2017 - 3,650 out of 13,400 (27%) 2017 - 3,750 out of 11,000 (34%)
Perhaps winning a national championship in football is that impactful, I don’t know. Or maybe my numbers are wrong. But it’s a big change. It would be interesting to see that comparison of standardized scores between those two classes.

I would think it fluctuates based on several different indicators.
Much like with scholarships in football, there are only so many spots. People transfer in, transfer out, switch majors, etc.
Not to mention we "accept" so many applications (much like a scholarship offer in football), but Clemson certainly couldn't enroll all of those. However, if they do a round of acceptance letters, that determines how many more can be given out (early commits in football).
I think for an acceptance rate you would need to average the past 4-5 years to have a more factual number.

Clemson academically has become one of the better known institutions for quality over quantity regarding student admissions simply due to the diverse programs of study offered. Students want to attend a university with high standards, excellent career paths and a great reputation.
USCe is struggling by comparison on several levels and having to increase student enrollment to help their financial circumstances. Their bridge program at Midlands Tech is quite popular. It has helped potential students to ultimately get accepted, but they have to earn admission.
Clemson made a wise long term decision to not try to “be all things to all people” unlike USCe which is now saddled with alternate campuses, many of which are duplicating what the technical colleges offer. As an example USC Sumter is in competition with Central Carolina Tech next door and is losing students.
Go Tigers!
