A quick look at Rivals reveals Clemson in the 9 spot, but...

Aug 29, 2016, 9:55 AM

BOOM, his bus and Scar have moved into the Top 10 after earning the commit from a Top 150 player in Jamyest J-Dub Williams.

I understand Mickey Conn to be a great guy and a former team mate of Dabo's at Bama. And really, there's nothing in the world wrong with the proper application of nepotism, but for ~$100,000 per year plus reserved parking with one of the truly Elite programs in the Nation, you'd think the former Head Man at Grayson, less than one-year removed, could keep the 148th best player and 10th best CB off of BOOM's first year resume?

Let's hope Dabo broaches this subject at Mickey's next quarterly review - Best is the Standard and it's best to keep this kind of talent out of the hands of Clemson's instate foe.

[note: Dabo's interim class was 44th & 1st full class 20th. Are things in Columbia not as bad as some here try to make it?]

I hate explaining this all the time

Aug 29, 2016, 10:07 AM

But SCar has 16 3stars committed with 21 total.

Rivals only counts up to 20 commits. They take off the highest ranked player and the lowest ranked player and count up the total. Every new player SCar gets from here on out will only move their number incrementally.

Clemson with only 13 commits which means every new recruit we receive will add huge numbers to our total as every point from every new commit will be added.

Drew Singleton is a 6.0 4 star so he's worth 135 points. When he commits, all of his points count toward the total.

Clemson will finish in top 10 at the end of the year and SCar will not.

It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Rivals has Clemson at 9th in total points and Scar at 10th - a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Scar drops all the way to 20th[lions and tigers and bears, oh my] looking at average stars.

They moved up to the 10th spot with the commit of J-Dub as they were ~13th prior. It's all there, in black and white, BOOM stole fizzy lifting drinks...

Aug 29, 2016, 10:18 AM

... and they already had LeAnthony Williams.

Both AJ Terrell and LeAnthony Williams are more highly rated corners than Jaymest Williams.

Should Clemson use a scholarship to take Jaymest Williams just to keep him away from South Carolina?

Should Jaymest Williams covet a Clemson scholarship to compete for playng time with two guys who look to be better than him?

Clemson stopped courting Jaymest Williams when AJ Terrell became a Clemson lock and Jaymest Williams scurried off to his next best offer.

year with so few schollies to hand out. Denying them guys like Williams and Or'Tre Smith would be great, but we can't be focused on SC that we lose sight of bigger goals (playoffs, national title). As Dabo would say, we have to do what's best for Clemson, and that's take the best guys on the board. Hopefully Muschamp will just squander the talent that falls into his lap.

Rivals only scores the top 20 recruits in a class

Aug 29, 2016, 10:19 AM

so SCAR is basically capped now. The only way they can get more points is by getting a commit from a player that is better than one of their current top 20 and bumping the worst guy out. On the other hand, Clemson and UGA with 13 and 14 commits, respectively, have a lot of room to vault up the rankings. We probably won't move too much just because we don't have 20 schollies to hand out this year, but we are still ahead of the Coots with about 3/5 the number of commits. Impressive stuff.

I think the attrition to the pros could be understated this year as well.

There are a few players that could have interesting decisions beyond the Watson/Gallman/Williams trio expected to leave.

Will Scott Pagano want to rotate in as a 3rd DT behind Wilkins & Dex?
Will Tyrone Crowder get a high enough draft grade that he feels it's worthwhile to go?
Will Korrin Wiggins bounce back enough to get on draft boards? Risky for him to stay another year.
Will Tyshon Dye want to battle against Choice and Feaster or turn pro?

Aug 29, 2016, 12:18 PM

LOL ... I thought you were better than this.

You are really pressing a specious arguement in your quest to be the T-Net pseudo-contrarian.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What argument? I didn't make Rivals put Scar at 10 and I

Aug 29, 2016, 12:33 PM

certainly have never said BOOM can't recruit or say anything remotely that resembles the end of days in Columbia.

And what I just wrote concerning predatory hires, is tried & true - any power broker in business has used it, as have I, in some form or fashion and with outstanding results.

What I see is a bunch of people knee-jerking, but that's what they do best.

What I see is people taking your posts WAY too seriously.

It's obvious all you wanted to do was rattle the Tigernet cage.
Congrats.

You are arguing (once again speciously) that Mickey Conn's inability or unwillingness to manipulate the Jaymest Williams recruitment is somehow a failure on the part of Dabo and the Clemson coaching staff to properly take advantage of the perception that hiring Conn guaranteed the Grayson connection.

It all makes for an excellent mechanism for stirring the (easily stirred) T-net pot while at the same time having no logical value in the context that you present it.

In Chase Brice, we got a 4-star QB out of Grayson ... a kid who actually was coached by Conn and a kid we really wanted. Then we didn't get an under-sized 4-star "athlete" who came to Grayson after Conn left, and a kid we only wanted as a fall-back recruit.

You've stated your purpose a couple of times in this thread ... to present the issue with the intent of offering a contrarian opinion that you know will get knee-jerk reactions.

I just thought you were capable of creating a better scnario to frame your "debate" ...

It's just not a very sound arguement and the only way you can defend it is by chuckling to yourself about causing a T-net stir and by posting a meme of someone smirking while bowing smugly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh deer lowered, I'm not arguing any such thing. It's all

Aug 29, 2016, 4:31 PM

garland & fashionable trimmings of the tree that is predatory hiring and simply furthering the ruse painted in the OP[Scar is Top 10 btw, if only for the moment]. Any hint of viability is always helpful to painting a mosaic of intricacies. I don't have to believe or argue it, just the mention is all that's necessary, although an understanding of the subject at hand is invaluable.

Not only did I knock your original post out of the park or the "objection" it emcompassed, you follow is up with this soft ball. Honestly, Dave Kingman, Kong hisself, had a better chance of hitting an off-speed pitch than you have of hitting my offering and he owns records for strike outs.

As for an excellent mechanism, that's hard to argue as here you are chopping wood, burning sawdust, my precious time and little else.

I'm sorry that you have become so upset with me.

I once looked up to you as a poster possessed of subtle creativity and depth of analysis. Instead, here you've revealed yourself to be rather petty and argumentative when your effort to produce T-net controversy is shown to be less than stellar.

If I've upset you by pointing out the obvious, I'm sorry. I won't waste anymore of your valuable time.

So long.

DueWest, you amount to no more than a cloudy day in my world

and don't move the needle.

You rolled the dice and were off base, which is OK, but then you decided to take it far beyond the game at hand and outside the pale of reason. The OP itself was emotionless, any further response fueled by the board as they beckoned the story further along and down the path.

I never cared which direction it took, simply helped it along way with each and every impassioned reply.

Truth, I couldn't be happier with some of what it wrought, not upset in the least and thrilled you had a role in the play until it became misguided and an off attempt at disparaging the author.

It's OK, I've embarrassed a lot brighter than you and will again - it's a curse.

It's always sad when the mighty fall ...

Aug 29, 2016, 5:34 PM

... and there has always been such a fine line between clever and silly.

Your OP and follow-up comments cross that line.

Your carefully crafted yet generally pointless attempt at creating T-Net unrest for laughs was ill-conceived and your self-congratulatory posture later in the thread embarrasses no one but yourself.

In fact, I'm embarrassed for you.

If that doesn't matter to you ... if I don't "move the needle", then let's see if you can bear to give me the last word. I don't believe you can do it, but maybe ...

If you do you're a better man than me Gunga Din.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And to think you might at least hold onto your integrity?

Aug 29, 2016, 5:41 PM

I guess "So long" doesn't carry the weight of credulity and/or truth it once did, but isn't that you all over - simply wrong?

And you're not bright enough to draw lines for me.

I'm beginning to think you'll keep posting whiney retorts until I go away.

That'll really show one of us.

The song has remained the same from the start, furthering the story along the chosen path of others, so if you're done making commitments you plan on breaking or taking swipes you've never had a chance to land, I'm going to go, but I doubt it's the case as yours has been a failed endeavor from the start.

Have a great night.

these rankings mean nothing

Aug 29, 2016, 11:13 AM

only the average star comparisons are of any importance and that doesn't mean very much. You have to improve the players you sign and develop a good team around these 'star' players. Average-wise the Tigers rank third.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, average is the only sensible way to look at it imho...

Aug 29, 2016, 8:38 PM

...when dealing with just a bunch of numbers in different size buckets. It's the only reasonable way to compare program A (with 22 commits) vs program B (with 13 commits) vs program C (with 17 commits). And, as you pointed out, we sit at #3 right now when average is used as the barometer.

Aug 29, 2016, 11:42 AM

its a big "whatevs" because we can expect decootments. however, op makes a valid point. usuck will get leftovers and that is the nature of bidness, i.e. rankings go up. usuck only needs to remember that wake and duke garner 4 stars as well. boom clearly has issues coaching any sort of talent and at some point i fully expect him to move on as a dcoordinator at another institution
