Not to beat a dead horse but one reason that Dabo

Nov 29, 2022, 2:03 PM

is so defensive about the offensive play calling is because he’s heavily involved with the offensive game planning and calls a lot of the plays.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Reading Comprehension much??

Everyone, including media, knows he’s involved in the offensive calls because we all see him with the headset and play cards. But no one will ask the specifics of why he’s involved and how much when he has an OC, who happens to be taking a lot of heat. All one and the same, you just don’t want to see it that way.

Jackleg? Really, that’s like from 1994.

Thats exactly right....

Nov 29, 2022, 2:32 PM

I think ppl also need to understand that Dabo can't, at this time, show his hand in how he is really thinking with recruiting and the ACCCG coming up. We will find out after season and/or recruiting is over. Right now you are just going to get coach-speak. He's GOT TO know there are significant problems. I would also say, feel free to disagree, he could answer the hard questions in a better way at times. Its never a good idea for a head coach to allude to fans when being questioned about results or issues.

Concentrating only on the offensive side of the ball....the QB issue was a single recruiting mistake by the coaching staff in taking a kid who can be a very good QB in the right system (JMO)...but who is a real bad fit for what we try to do. I feel pretty good about the future of that room. The WR room, on the other hand, is a whole other matter and is a significant issue and has been for several years. Largely, IMO caused by stubbornness and an unwillingness to adapt as your surroundings change. Dabo finally begrudgingly acquiesced on the Summer OV thing....and it paid big dividends. Lets see if he can do it in a few other places where it is desperately needed. I'll say it again: people can bloviate all day about all the issues....the NUMBER 1 issue BY FAR for this program is Roster Management. We are sorely lacking in talented depth at multiple positions. You see this clearly during the usuck game...(not naming names). We are literally playing with one hand tied behind our back, by our choosing, while trying to compete with the Bama, Uga and OSUs of the world.

Dabo made the statement after the ND loss that "he didn't see this coming"...or something to that effect. I REALLY hope, like I mentioned above, that is just coach speak. Some people don't want to admit it, but since 2019, there has been a slide. Like with the decision to do Summer OV, got to continue to adapt. There is NO industry in existence where you can stand-still and continue to succeed. You must be willing to adopt new processes and look for continual improvement....even if it just slightly goes against long-held beliefs. Dabo has done it before....(coaching changes, changes in recruiting philosophy)...but its harder to do as you ascend up the ladder and have enjoyed success.

Re: Thats exactly right....

Nov 29, 2022, 2:36 PM

This explanation, perhaps more than any other, has the best explanatory power as to why Dabo has given the answers he has given.

That being said... I don't anticipate large scale changes on the offensive side of the ball. But yeah, this is likely the reason he's not talking about it, even if it ends up happening, right now.

Leaders also fix problems.

Nov 29, 2022, 3:05 PM

At the very least, they attempt to fix problems.

We have had a crappy offense the last two years. How is Dabo being a leader with that? He merely promoted our QB coach who has no experience as an offensive coordinator at this level.

Did we see any significant changes in our offensive scheme? Nope, not at all.

Have we seen any significant improvment in our offensive players since last year? Honestly, no, we really haven’t. Our quarterback has improved some, but has still hurt us in several games this year to the point of being benched twice. Our backup QBs don’t appear ready to be counted on. Our running backs continue being careless with the ball. Our receivers continue to be unable to get open consistently, and frequently drop passes they should catch. Our offensive line continues to be unreliable, especially in the passing game.

So I don’t see any evidence that Dabo has fixed that problem, nor that he has even really tried to fix it. Does he even see it as a problem? If so, he hasn’t said much about being disappointed with it, perhaps because he’s too busy defending himself and his QB.

Unfortunately for Dabo, being a leader isn’t just about defending your team. It’s also about preparing your team to excel, and putting in position to succeed. Dabo hasn’t shown a willingness to do that as it relates to the offense for two years now.

I don’t think Dabo is trying to direct criticism toward himself at all. In fact, he seems to think that criticism is unwarranted at this point. Otherwise, we wouldn’t hear him go off on tangents lately about how successful he’s been at Clemson and how fans with unrealistic expectations can’t be tolerated.

Nov 29, 2022, 3:16 PM

I think what's crazy Judge Keller® is that while you are absolutely correct about everything you are saying. TNET and the rest of the college football world would agree that our offense looks pathetic.

Where you seem to have some wires crossed is your blatant opposition to Dabo and the football program, meanwhile giving Brad Brownell the benefit of the doubt?

Why are you so tolerant of the basketball teams mediocrity but so adversely opposed to a good football season?

If the basketball team was playing for a conference championship it would be a great season for the Tigers BBall team.

I think what this board wants from you is consistency in your narrative. If you are ready to call this season a bust and criticize Dabo then we want you to have that same energy with Brownell.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let me try to clarify.

Nov 30, 2022, 8:59 AM

First, I am not opposed to Dabo or our football program. I love Clemson football, and have since the 1980s. Dabo is an outstanding coach and has been incredible for our program. My comments about the football program come from a place of caring a lot about it and wanting to see it return to prominence.

Second, I do not support mediocrity for any Clemson sport. I have extremely high goals for Clemson basketball. I believe that we can contend for ACC championships and be a regular fixture in the NCAA tournament. However, I also acknowledge that we have a LOT working against us. People who think we just need a new coach are failing to understand just how much we have to overcome at Clemson when it comes to basketball.

Third, I do feel that I’m consistent in my narrative. But my expectations are absolutely not the same for Clemson football and Clemson basketball. I judge each sport based on its own unique situation, and Clemson football has many advantages over every single team on our schedule this year. We are more talented, and we spend more on our program as an administration and fan base. The same can’t be said for Clemson basketball. We are routinely up against teams with more talent and better resources that us. That naturally change expectations.

So no, I don’t have to have the same expectations for Clemson football and Clemson basketball. In fact, I would be unreasonable if I did.

I hope this helps clarify for you coltdizzle.

Nov 29, 2022, 3:23 PM [ in reply to Leaders also fix problems. ]

You don't think Dabo is bright enough to understand that QB means everything in this offense?

Can DJ be fixed? If not, you have to wait for the next guy to be ready. That wasn't this year. So we'll have two five stars competing to be the fix this spring and the current 5 star will move on.

People want instant fixes. Wonder why Saban couldn't fix his WR's this year? He's the best ever

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Instant fixes?!?

Nov 30, 2022, 1:28 PM

We've had a bad offense for two years straight! There were even signs that we had issues several years ago when Trevor Lawrence was our quarterback. There has been plenty of time to make adjustments to the roster, the way players are coached, the scheme we run, and the plays we call.

It shouldn't take an elite, generational QB to run our system. Teams putting up much better offensive numbers than we do don't have 5 star QBs running their systems. They don't have Sammy Watkins at wide receiver. Rather, they have a scheme that puts players in position to be successful. Ours doesn't.

Even if we generously remove all responsibility from the coaches for DJ's lack of development, and call DJ a recruiting miss, why should our offense fall apart because of him? Why is the QB that important to our success? Why can't helpful adjustments be made to the offense?

And why aren't any other QBs ready to contribute? We have two other 5-star QBs on the team. Dabo has called it his best QB room at Clemson. You mean to tell me that we don't have a QB on the roster capable of throwing a 10-15 yard pass over the middle, or the occasional deep ball? If not, then our coaches have sold us a bill of goods regarding their ability to coach.

Correct.

With that said, Streeter is equally to blame for letting Dabo meddle in the offense. At least Chad didn't let him meddle.

learned when he hired The Chad and gave up playcalling duties. Now, it seems, we have come full circle, back to Dabo being heavily involved in playcalling, and the offense is floundering. We can only hope he reLEARNS the lesson again after this season is over. He is NOT going to admit defeat during the season, and make coaching changes now.

This leads me to believe that Dabo wants to be involved

Nov 30, 2022, 1:31 PM

in the offense on a play-by-play basis.

He could've hired a top offensive coordinator from the college ranks or the NFL if he wanted to - someone he could trust to handle the offense. Dabo could've made that hire, and be hands off, but he didn't.

I can't help but assume that Dabo wants to be on that headset with his play sheet making decisions about which plays we run. Otherwise, why would he have hired someone he clearly doesn't trust to do it?

There are no magic playcalls or schemes that can fix what's broken.

As it is, we've squeezed water out of the stone, also known as the elephant in the room.

It starts at QB. You don't see great offenses functioning without great QB play.
