WSJ Editorial stated greatest barrier to minority advancement in USA..

Jul 7, 2020, 10:21 AM

is the K-12 education system..and not allowing for students to go elsewhere or to get vouchers.

Saying, The Education unions don’t want to lose their hold on the $ coming from member teachers..and then diverting some of it back to the Democrats to make sure all is smooth.

How do you explain SC -

Jul 7, 2020, 10:31 AM

No teachers union and the last time the Dems had any power was when ol’ Jim Hodges was governor

That's funny...

Considering the voucher system was created to re-segregate schools.

Look to Louisiana to see the disaster of vouchers and how they have particularly harmed minorities.

I can tell you in FL

We started a school choice movement about 10 years ago and went from something like 38th to now 16th and even up to 3rd for quality rank: https://www.cato.org/publications/policy-analysis/fixing-bias-current-state-k-12-education-rankings?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI15Ljw6676gIVk4zICh2RiQ5hEAAYASAAEgIyLvD_BwE

It made a huge difference. Not exactly vouchers, which would be much better, but it's close, and it's working out great. In 15 years FL will no longer be the laughing stock of the country. You watch.

Is this the same system...

That discriminates like this?

Or is here?

Public money should not go to private institutions.

I guess T3 can stop calling you my scok.

after going to conventions for both Step Up and the McKay scholarships (2 main bodies that hand out money) and meeting those who run the private schools in FL that there are VERY few that aren't reasonable about those subjects. The Sentinel loathes school choice and runs hit pieces on it all the time. Thing is, let's say you have an LGBT child and tour schools. One is discriminatory against her/him/them/zir/etc. Why would you spend your money (yes, it is your money that the government is letting you choose where to spend) there? Those places will wither and die in the current atmosphere, which is what they should do. But I guess being 38th in education versus 3rd is fine as long as there aren't a few private schools that are stuck back in the stone age, right?

But here's the more simple answer...

Jul 7, 2020, 11:30 AM

Private educational institutions shouldn't receive taxpayer money if they discriminate against students. To be safe, don't give public money to any private institutions. Otherwise, force them to play by public law.

There is a bill in the state senate

Jul 7, 2020, 11:35 AM

to do just that. I would be fine with that law, as long as it wasn't a slippery slope. Many of these small private schools have <100 kids, which is perfect for many students who flourish in small schools. It would be impossible for those schools to have 16 different locker rooms and 12 special bathrooms. They should be allowed to have a reasonable number of single stalled unisex bathrooms and the normal 2 locker rooms, allowing students to change in a bathroom if they don't feel comfortable.

Agree education is an issue but not sure vouchers are answer

Jul 7, 2020, 11:56 AM

A home environment that values and reinforces education is key in my opinion.
