For those like me who went through Charley Pell's back stab of leaving Clemson for Florida after beating the Coots in one our our best season's ever has to appreciate the pain the fan bases of Notre Dame and Oklahoma feel.

I still hate Florida for what happened in 1978

Didn't Pell say Clemson would never compete for a Natty? Three years later!!! And Charley never won anything in The Swamp.

Iptay Tournament that Friday as he did an interview for channel 4 in Greenville with him. Charley was about 7 bourbons in and swore in that interview he was not leaving Clemson. Next morning a friend of dad's who worked for Eastern Airlines spotted Charley boarding a plane for Gainesville. Charley was actually a good guy but his moral compass went off kilter from time to time. Personal ambition

I was living in Clemson and would go to Pell's weekly press conference at the Clemson House. After the Carolina game at his press conference, he denied the rumor that he was leaving the Tigers only to accept the job at Florida before the week was out.

That was the best thing that ever happen to us . . . . a young Danny Ford became Clemson's new coach!

my own self that Charley Pell attempted suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning at one time. He pulled the old "Hose from the exhaust into the running car" deal, but was saved when a State Trooper found him in time.

to leave on big program for another these days. What's the best way to handle it? Social media is instant and rules the day now, so info comes out quick. And its not like Kelly or Riley can disclose their interest in another job. Its alot easier to leave a Coastal/App St for Power 5 job bc everyone understands. Its just different in these situations....and really what's a coach supposed to say in a presser? Its a no-win situation...kind of is what it is.
