Simply pointing out that ESPN is talking about it. Could be manufactured, but given his stoic look it might not be. Regardless hope the kid is happy.

The kid looked uncomfortable to me. A few of the folks standing around looked uncomfortable but the most happiest guy in the room was the fat white guy on the right side of the screen. I wonder if that's the 'recruiting,' coach they just hired.

That was his DL coach at Paramus.

There was...concern about that guy. I'll leave it at that.

It's done. A lot of grown men were put into positions to secure Gary's commitment, and that indeed happened...but, as you mentioned, he did not look comfortable with it.

Stuff like that has a way of working out...or not working out, as the case may be. The last guy who pulled this signing-day stuff on Dabo was Mike McIntosh at UF with Ron Zook...which worked out for nobody. McIntosh ended up in purgatory - in the form of then Division I-AA Georgia Southern, where he caught 23 balls his senior year while playing in an option offense. Which is just plain cruel, not that I think anybody at Clemson will feel any sympathy. McIntosh ended up catching zero balls for the Gators. Zook ended up fired, took his act to Illinois, and got fired again. He now exists as a real stumper of a question in Trivia Pursuit or Jeopardy - who was the coach between Spurrier and Meyer at Florida?

I doubt it goes so badly for Gary - the kid really is talented - but you can easily see him turning into another Robert Nkemdiche. And unlike Ron Zook, Jim Harbaugh actually does win football games. He just never lasts more than three years anywhere on account of him being, you know, certifiable.

At the end of the day, the kid hopped out of a stretched limo, while apparently still texting two different coaching staffs that he was coming...and then apparently made up his mind at the last second on stage. Like, wow, man. No entitlement issues there, No Sirree Bob.. That is probably not exactly the best way to begin a college career, before one has ever even taken a snap at the college level, mind, but hey, no judgee. My judgment at 17 was less than stellar my own self; I can't imagine I would have kept my head glued on straight with ESPN, 50 college recruiting services, and 5,000 college coaches all following me around and telling me how amazing I was either. So go forth and prosper, young man, and I truly do hope the circus didn't ruin you.

The guys Rashan Gary would have been replacing, by the way, were not #1-rated at anything coming out of high school, and they did not hop out of stretched limos to commit live on ESPN. Clemson was recruiting Gary as an end, where Clemson is losing Shaq Lawson, from Daniel HS - you know, in Central, SC, where most of Clemson's coaches have kids in school - and Kevin Dodd, of Riverside HS in Greer, South Carolina, less than 30 miles from campus. Obviously these were local boys, fixer-uppers, developmental prospects, diamonds in the rough, all that jazz. But though those two had no fanfare around them, these local boys had the physical talent, which Clemson obviously spotted, and, obviously, they also had the work ethic, hunger, and mentality...and perhaps most importantly, they were developed correctly - which again, speaks volumes about the system at Clemson, and the coaching they were getting from Marion Hobby.

They are now both considered 1st-rounders. Coming out as juniors.

If Gary wants to pull that malarkey with Clemson, Marion Hobby, Brent Venables, and Dabo...uhm, well, okay. They have an NFL draft to prep for anyhow, and a new crop of very talented young guys - you know, Austin Bryant, Richard Yeargin, Clellin Ferrell, Xavier Kelly - to get ready for their turn in the pipe.

I think they'll be fine. And Jim Harbaugh will still be a crazy man. Who is already a full year into his three-year half-life.

ESPiN might be the only bigger drama queens than Tnet. Oh yeah, the hat picking recruits.
