is about like going up 28 zip in football...but, you can also now play 13 guys on defense? It just seems like in soccer, if you don't need to score, you just sit back, steal the ball, and kick it as far down to the other end as you can...and repeat that over and over...

The skill at that level is so much more advanced, you can usually pack it up at 2 - 0. At the college level, simple ball handling mistakes can lead to quick disasters, as you saw in the first minute. It is really a different game.

Obviously the more you score, the more safety margin you have. But it is never OK to think you have it won until time expires.
I recall a CU game when I was in school - we were up 5! to zero at halftime. 5 goals to none!!!!
That is truly inconceivable. I mean surely that game is in the bag, right?
That sort of margin leads to complacency, and errors.
We lost 6-5.

It’s like football in that you can get beat in the prevent defense instead of attacking the whole time.
Our defense & players were good enough after playing to the wire against the best competition all season in the ACC.
I don’t think Washington has faced that kind of pressure game after game like we have.
These Tigers kept believing & rose to the occasion with a National Championship!

until the last 30 seconds or so with us holding a two point lead. lol
Too ingrained into "American" style football, I suppose, especially after this season with our nail biter finishes.
Our fellows totally dominated the Huskies. Wow! Great victory!

I don’t or wouldn’t feel comfortable at 2-0 just because one mistake and you are only 1 up and then you may start playing tight. 3-0 and I am feeling really good.

with those last 2 corner kicks.....tap it 3 feet to another Clemson guy who drills it off a Huskie out of the back line, new corner kick, repeat process ....and the clock never stops.....

A penalty kick is for a foul in the box; the shooter is 1 on 1 with the goalie for a PK. If you watched Friday, those were PKs after we remained tied after OT. There was no PK yesterday.

of mind-startling coffee about three a.m. daily, always out on a porch, 365 days-a-year...an ole Army habit unbroken to this day.
Might be why few want me as an overnight guest: I've terrorized quite a few over the years, up early rattling stuff in the kitchens making coffee...then slamming the doors on my way outside! lol

2-0 worst lead in soccer.
At least that’s what my coaches always told me. Seems like 1-0 is worse to me though

year. Once you get up 2 scores with your defense smothering them, you start to feel comfortable. The problem is in soccer, that can change quickly if you make a mistake and put you back in a 1 score game.

It depends like any other sport, first of all there are 11 guys on each side. 2-0 may not be a big lead, if it’s a high scoring team, Clemson would’ve needed to stay aggressive but instead they started they decided to D it up and it worked. Great coaching

You can definitely get in trouble by playing too deep
Dec 13, 2021, 8:20 AM

in soccer, especially if you aren't accustomed to that style - which our squad likely is not. You don't want your goal to be under siege for an entire half.
We did two things really well in the 2nd half yesterday despite dropping deeper.
1) We maintained an attacking threat by looking to play quick through balls or balls over the top to our forwards any time we won the ball near midfield. We managed to create a couple of pretty good scoring chances like that, but it also just kept their back four honest and didn't allow them to set up in our half.
2) We kept pressing and didn't allow them to easily bring the ball forward into our 3rd. We did press deeper rather than in the opponents half like we often do, but we consistently pressed them as soon they crossed midfield and that did give them alot of trouble.
Most of Washington's chances in the 2nd half were a result of that littler midfielder of theirs (Soto?) single-handedly dribbling through our pressure. For my money he was the best player on the entire field yesterday, but it didn't matter.

Don't forget big 33, in the mid. They started using him off the bench in the second and was a harsh dose of fresh legs and size. He created some of their more dangerous chances.
Our possession style would seriously disrupt their play. The seemed kinda sluggish breaking out after a bad pass, gaining possession and then was unsure how to press forward in numbers. Our mid/forward providing pressure helped. I was kinda shocked after watching them play Georgetown and knowing how ND's style was kinda our kryptonite. I would expect them to push in that direct but they didn't.
Once about with 15-20 left, they had a 4 on 3 and it was just "off". That was their best chance. About that same time, they tried to use their height advantage too of a few crosses and corners. Good D all around.
Our best defense came from challenging their midfielders. Sure Soto and a few got somme penetration but we kept our shape and they always had our defenders in front of them - almost.

and pushed their defenders all the way up to the mid line trying to maintain possession and enhance their scoring opportunities. Clemson managed to get behind the defense a couple of times but couldn't convert those break-away opportunities.

Their keeper was pushing up enough that a controlled clear to one of our attacking midfielder could create a long-goal with the right strike. However, a few times we would push only to lose control rather than to hold, in their defensive 3rd. Possession on their third would have pulled their defenders back, slowed their attacks and would eat a lot of clock. We kinda did that in last minute...

Other than George Marks, our goalie! Loved the 2 (I thought he had 3) high point saves. Might need him at WR in the bowl game!

2 goals is like being up 17 in football - it isn't as big as you think and it is the most dangerous of leads. 2-0 goal flip a LOT and can be erased in a heart beat. You have to keep pressing as you can't go total bunker either.
Woot, we held out.

That was Hootie Ingram's football philosophy. Punt on 3rd down in case they block it and then play defense.

as others have stated, 2-0 is the most dangerous lead in soccer. You get complacent, don't make as many runs off the ball, and all of a sudden the game is being played in your half of the field. Remember being up 14-3 against FSU in Bowden Bowl 1? It's kind of like that. The other team is desperate and you're on cruise control.
You figure if you cough up one goal you're still good at 2-1, but then, the other team scores, smells blood in the water and it's REALLY easy for then to get to 2-2.

Not the same as up 28-0 in football due to alternating possessions in football and the way the clock runs.
It's more like being up 8-0 where two plays can tie the game.
Our team played well with the lead but the Clemson goalie made a bunch of saves and Washington missed on a bunch of decent shots.

Our goalie is awesome! The second half he played with the sun in his eyes. That is really tough. He is from Raleigh. I am glad he got the win in front of a hometown crowd!

Not quite, but: 1) The first to score in the match gets an exceptional advantage, particularly in leagues in which you can score a tie during the regular season. You set yourself up for three league points and maybe one if you let the other team score. But, you are going to get points. 2) Bad things can happen even if you score first and go up two or more. Look at the France-Switzerland match in last summer's UEFA European Championship, with the Swiss coming back to tie and send the game to penalties. The game is 90 minutes long. There are three substitutions. Teams get worn down late. 3) In spite of the above, yes, teams do try to "park the bus." It's just not a sure thing.

I'd say it's like going up by 16 in a football game.
Other team is only down 2 scores. One TD and a 2 point conversion, and it's a one possession game.

How about 14-0 two touchdowns is more like it! If you get one & get an onside kick and you get the ball back the pressure changes to the other team. You style of play suddenly changes...
Our crowd was the difference in holding on for the win... we hade the MoJo & the 12th man!
