Would the ACC want USCe or West Virginia if it expanded with ND as a full member?

Jul 6, 2016, 10:46 PM

Which would Clemson select and why? How do posters think either would do and which division would get ND and the other new member? Thoughts welcomed in this the dead period.

Personally if USuck versus West Virginia were available I actually might take the latter over the chickens despite living in NECola. I believe W. Va. Would compete quite well along with ND. I would not be in favor of a nine game conference schedule for several reasons. ND should be put in the Coastal division while either new member would join the Atlantic foes. I would do a four pod system for scheduling of eight ACC games each. Have the best teams face off each December.

Go Tigers!

Neither.

we just got rid of MD. why add another terrible fan base?

Jul 6, 2016, 11:23 PM

both UofSuck and WVU are two fan bases from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Honestly we would take whoever Notre Dame wanted to get them in (probable Navy). If I had my pick I would pick Penn State (highly unlikely but it never hurts to dream) followed by Houston and Memphis.

I wouldn't want either. Usuck is obvious, they are a bunch of idiots down there. WVU needs to stay hidden in the mountains.

penn state would be my pick as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's be NAVY or Cincy

Jul 7, 2016, 8:43 AM [ in reply to Neither ]

ND will have most of the say who comes with them. It'll be Navy where ND can still play them every year or it'll be Cincy because of the Ohio market/recruiting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd prefer WVU and absolutely so would the conference.

Jul 6, 2016, 11:01 PM

Bring in another region and natural rivals to all the former Big East teams. And right the wrong of WVU playing in the Big 12, which is ridiculous.

But SC in the ACC would work very well for Clemson. It would free up an OOC game. Plus they couldn't use the only recruiting gimmick they currently have...being in the SEC.

Re: I'd prefer WVU and absolutely so would the conference.

Jul 6, 2016, 11:13 PM

I posed the question to gauge reaction to USuck potentially getting kicked out of the SEC and thus applying for a return to the ACC. In reviewing their history versus W. Va. I honestly think USuck would find the conference much more difficult than expected.

I like playing eight conference games, but with a pod system I could see playing your pod (3) and two teams from the other three pods in a rotating scheduling arrangement.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But if we got SC it would make the ACC look that much worse!

Jul 6, 2016, 11:51 PM [ in reply to I'd prefer WVU and absolutely so would the conference. ]

;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Take a look at this - scrap divisions - 8 games - with WVa

Jul 7, 2016, 7:23 PM [ in reply to I'd prefer WVU and absolutely so would the conference. ]

in place of Wake Forest.

3 Permanent Rivals annually - 5 in pool play. Each program plays every other program 2x every four years home and away minimum.

3 Permanent Rivals

Clemson - Ga. Tech, FSU, NC State
FSU - Clemson, Miami, Syracuse
UNC - NC State, Duke, UVA
UVA - Va. Tech, UNC, NC State
Ga. Tech - Clemson, Duke, Louisville
Duke - UNC, Ga. Tech, BC
Va. Tech - UVA, Louisville, WVa
Louisville - Ga. Tech, Va. Tech, WVa
BC - Syracuse, Duke, Miami
Miami - FSU, BC, Pitt
NC State - UNC, Clemson, UVA
Pitt - Syracuse, WVa, Miami
Syracuse - BC, FSU, Pitt
West Va - Va. Tech, Louisville, Pitt

Then we would play everyone else twice, with ND rotating in and out like they do now, every four years, just like college lasts. 14 teams is the perfect number for this format.

End of the season, two highest standings play in the ACCCG, that is until those games ultimately get phased out to make room for an 8-team playoff.

I have great respect for Wake Forest, I just feel they no longer belong trying to keep up at the Power 5 level, and as you can see, West Va would make for some great matchups and greatly enhanced value to the league overall.

This would be as competitive a league as any, and would not require anyone else to join in the future to improve upon. TV markets? That narrative is changing. Quality of content tops the charts, and this produces that.

Option #3

Jul 6, 2016, 11:22 PM

I'd rather take West Virginia & South Carolina over Notre Dame. As bad as it is to have to deal with Boston College & Syracuse in the ACC, ND is even worse in the middle of nowhere Indiana...which is almost as bad as WV in the Big 12. Unfortunately, it's too logical for ND to head off to the Big 12 and help save that conference from implosion (or even the Big 10).

Jul 7, 2016, 12:06 AM

I would take neither, the do not add to any kind of package, either in media coverage, or decent sports teams. I would take Kentucky. Good basketball team, would seal Sec to lower states, a natural rival for Louisville, expand coverage throughout Kentucky.

Re: Would the ACC want USCe or West Virginia if it expanded with ND as a full member?

Jul 7, 2016, 6:01 AM

Louisville fans would hate to have Kensucky in the ACC worse than you guys would want the chickens. They do nothing for our SOS, and are at best the 3rd or 4th best football school in the state behind UofL, WKU, and EKU. I'd much rather have Cincinnati in the conference than sUcK. They have decent sports in basketball and football, awesome recruiting grounds in the heart of B10 country which would help out all the northern schools. A large media footprint and a new geographic location, wouldn't hurt either, but as others here have pointed out, there are bigger catches.

Many posters seem to want neither team. Who would you pick if ND decided to become a full ACC member?

My first choice would be Navy to replace Maryland geographically, West Virginia would be second and maybe Cincy third, but their stadium is still quite small even after updating.

I do think USCe fans fully understand how challenging the conference has become. This is not the ACC of 1970 when USuck departed.

Go Tigers!

Re: Would the ACC want USCe or West Virginia if it expanded with ND as a full member?

Jul 7, 2016, 11:50 AM

I lived in Annapolis for several years, and bringing Navy in would add nothing except a whipping boy for every sport. West Virginia is kinda out there. Sports Teams are okay, I jut do not see what that add. If we are gong to pick up any school and I understand the reason for Maryland area, I would take Penn State. That would handle Maryland and Pennsyvanni, and add to the Pitt Rivalry. I also mention Kentucky.

I am looking at more of adding to the marking package of the ACC. South Carolina or West Virgina does not do that. Maybe Cinn, but think that goes to far west into Ohio.

Penn St. was ready to join several years ago, but the Big 10 halted that move by offering hockey. The fans love hockey so the ACC has no chance to get them unless we offer the sport.

I do not want another NC school to join the ACC. Absolutely no UConn either!

There's no one in Virginia that fits that bill. We definitely aren't adding another North Carolina School (so no ECU). Georgia Southern, Coastal, UCF, USF, MTSU, Memphis? Do you really want to CREATE another recruiting rival?

Realistically or practically, your options are:

UConn
WVU (if you could negotiate it with the Big 12)
Navy
Cincy

If we bring in Notre Dame, the team to add may be Houston or a similar team in Texas (poach TAMU from the SEC just for fun). Penn State doesn't bring us into a new market, though it's a good fit academically and size-wise.

SCar would never leave their beloved SEC. That is all they

have to hold on when the going gets tough (which is all the time). WVA would be a good alternative, but I imagine their Big 12 buyout is crazy high. It wouldn't be worth it to pursue them. We just need to pluck the cream of the American Conference Crop. A Memphis, UCF (if they get good again), ECU, or Temple.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Neither are realistic options

Jul 7, 2016, 1:06 PM

South Carolina isn't leaving the SEC, even if they weren't already there, adding them to the ACC brings nothing to the table in terms of TV coverage.

Any of the expansion propositions today are all about adding TV sets. Adding teams to the conference only dilutes profit if you don't add TV revenue.

This also rules out West Va, as Va Tech already has the Roanoke and Bluefield WV TV markets covered and Va Tech would strenuously object to WVa anyway given Beamer's animosity toward their program. Yes i know he retired but he'll still have some say there I'm sure.

As mentioned in another post, Penn ST. would be worth considering if ND entered full time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

South Carolina, and it's a no-brainer

Jul 7, 2016, 2:58 PM

Recall that they instantly became good by simply joining the SEC. With that kind of associative power, just think how good the ACC (already making progress with two top-four programs right now) would be the moment we welcome them back.
Now I know there are some who will find my remarks offensive. Bitter rivals and what not. I understand. Yes, I concede that they will instantly dominate equestrian, and perhaps provide a challenge to the women's basketball powers. Still, I believe their "former SEC" status could really help our overall perception.
Discuss.

Not saying I want them, but think under the right circumstances the Big12 would be willing to breech contract to get WVU out. Terrible for their geography. They would just have to have a better replacement lined up.
