Would Reducing Scholarships Reduce Transfers?

Dec 6, 2022, 3:05 PM

If the NCAA reduced Scholarships to say 75 would that cut back on transfers? Let the NIL players pay there own way as walk-ons.

Right now, if a team signs a player out of the portal, the school must guarantee the players scholarship even if he's a bust.

Since College Football is moving to an NFL-like model, I suggest letting a college sign 85-95 players and at the end of spring ball the roster needs to be cut to say 80. Those 5 that don't make the cut are not guaranteed a scholarship. At the end of fall camp, the roster has to be cut to 75 Scholarship players.

I know it a wacky thought but it's a slow day.

Any concern for the players’ welfare? Those that don’t get NIL and are cut and lose their scholarship - is that ok? Perhaps even gets cut after an injury? Should the schools still be on the hook for their medical care?

NIL and the portal made this more of a business

IMO, as long as they are with the team of course medical is provided if injured. But if a kid wants to roll the dice with the portal then he's rolling the dice with his academic future.

The reward should be geared to sticking with your school. Of course certain addendums could be added like a Head Coach being fired or leaving...

My thought is to keep kids from transferring so easily.

Transfers are not bad and if injuries hit, 85 is not enough sometimes (see 2021 for us). Colleges do not have practice squads or the option of mid season pickups like NFL team do.

Maybe they should have a practice squad...

Not a bad thought. If you are a kid that hit the portal and didn't get selected and were offered a parachute you would take even if it meant only getting a partial scholarship.
