Worth it?

Aug 13, 2015, 10:29 AM

Dad came over to help me clean out the gutters on the front of the house (not really help, just look like he was holding the ladder to make me feel a little safer on that wobbly POS, and maybe break my 18' fall a little). I go to open the garage from the keypad, and it opens about 2". Shit. One of the springs broke. That's not a cheap fix, as I recall the previous owners having to fix one when it broke a few years ago, costing in the hundreds, if'n I'm remembering correctly. So I'm looking at the door/spring with dad, and we're like, "hey, maybe we CAN fix this."

There's a bunch of sharp edges on garage doors, rails, and broken springs, as it turns out. I took off a chunk of my thumb about the size of a dime on the first attempt. It was enough that if I could have found said chunk, I'd have considered my options for putting it back on (ER, or scotch tape, or something). Stupid thing is, I had my work gloves sitting right effing next to me, that would have saved my thumb. Since it was bleeding profusely, I didn't want to get blood inside the glove, so I left it off, and sliced the pad side of the same thumb on the next attempt (still no clue which particular razor blade included in the garage door assembly was responsible). After three more attempts with no significant injuries and having to unattach and reattempt all three because we screwed the pulleys and cables up...it works.

Now...probably saved $200 and a week of non-working garage door. Worth it, or not?

I've heard of arms being broken and all kinds of dangerous stuff happening from fixing the GD springs.

You should have gotten your in-laws to fix it?

If you just go ahead and cut the rest of your thumb off

Aug 13, 2015, 10:43 AM

(depending on your insurance policy) you could make upwards of $40K. So that sounds totally worth it to me.

Garage door springs are one thing I don't F with

Aug 13, 2015, 11:02 AM

I replaced the opener myself, but anything with the door, pulleys or spring I call a pro. Pro's wanted $400 to replace the opener and I did it for $150 and about 2 hours of work.

I'll work on just about anything in my house

Aug 13, 2015, 11:02 AM

EXCEPT garage door springs.

The torsion spring of my two car garage door broke a few years ago, so I bought one on line for like $20, and thought "this shouldn't be too hard to put on."

I got it semi installed and went to preload it (so it would actually do something to assist with pulling the door up) and I think I read somewhere it needs to be turned 5 times then tightened down.

The deal was I had 2 steel round stock bars that I would turn with one, then lock it with the other. On about the 3rd turn, after it had a fair amount of tension in it, the bar that I was using to turn the spring slipped out of it's socket, and banged me square in my forehead, knocking me off the third step of a 6' ladder onto the floor.

I was dazed a bit from the hit and the fall, but later got to thinking about it. Had I been about an inch or 2 further away from that bar, it would have taken my eye out. I lived with a big bump on my head and a bruise on my #### for about a week, but always remember that I almost lost my eye. No more garage door springs for me.

I called a garage door guy the next day. He came out with two steel bars a little larger in diameter than I had and did teh same operation I was doing, except it took him about 10 minutes and he didn't almost maim himself. $50 later my garage door worked again.

When you're torquing down those springs, if you lose your grip that rod can spin and break your arm.....bad. Very dangerous installing or adjusting a spring in a garage door. You're lucky.
