Agreed. The only way I see is if Clemson runs all wins through the schedule while also setting some offensive scoring records. They have to be all W’s but blowout W’s with tons of highlights and crazy numbers. A la Lincoln Reilly at OU type offensive stats

Well, we had one loss going to the CFP in 2017 (2016 season)

As you know we beat OSU 31-0 in the semi, and 35-31 win over Alabama for the CFP title. Our lone loss was against Pitt.
We had one loss in the 2017 season and still made it in the 2018 CFP because no one was undefeated. Clemson was the #1 seed, but lost to Bama in the first round. Clemson is 4-2 in CFP first round games.
The 2018 and 2019 seasons we were undefeated up to the title game. We crushed Alabama 44-16 in the CFP Title in 2019. In the 2019 season, we matched LSU with both undefeated in the title game, won by LSU.
Last year was a Covid mess. Clemson finished the regular season with one loss, and went to the CFP. We lost to Ohio State for the first time ever. Clemson is 4-1 all time against Ohio State.
Bottom line, It is unusual to have two undefeated teams for the CFP championship game. We have a good chance of winning the rest of our games. I only see two games that will be fairly close, NC State (road game) and Florida State at home.

In 2015 we lost to Pitt. We also beat 3 high quality opponents: Louisville, ND, and FSU. And a good UNC in the ACCCG.
The UGA loss is to a very high quality opponent. But we don’t have anything approaching the 2015 wins available this year.
It’s early, things could change. But we certainly could miss with just this one loss.

Even if we make it, we will lose first round due to crap offense

So I don’t think it matters

Yep. It’s all assuming the offense gets way better. At QB , O line, scheme. I wouldn’t bet on it happening but that’s the only way. Also hard to do with an offense that doesn’t have the kind of playmakers last year and years prior

I hope we can make it to the ACCCG. Not because

of Saturday but because we have to do that first. So yes, it is way too early to tell how teams are going to shake out over a long season after the first game.

Correct! if we win the ACC title with only one loss we will

make the CFP. We will also have likely improved the OL over the long season. We will also have likely also made some moves with the OL starters.

Those are good points, bringing up past seasons. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on where the team is at, CFP is decided by a group of ppl - hence there’s at least some aspect of subjectivity in the decisions. The one loss Clemson teams you bring up, I think we have to also look at the offense. The Pitt loss we still put up huge points. Syracuse loss was when Bryant got injured. We still scored over 20 pts in that game.
In other words, win or lose we have to look at how we won or lost. Was it close til the end? Did we still put up a lot of points offensively? Imo this Georgia loss is especially tough on our resume because of the lack of offensive productivity. Clearly Clemson defense is elite no doubt about that. And it’ll help our chances for CFP to have that elite defense. But if our offense is as vanilla and unproductive as this first game, going winless the rest of the way won’t cut it. We need to win and win big in our conference schedule. Even if we get all wins but we have a few games that are really close and the offense looks blah (say vs NCSU, FSU, Pitt, whoever), CFP committee’s subjectivity could kick in and put us outside the top 4. Just my two cents

Right off the bat, I'll assume two SEC teams make it. Alabama + UGA or A&M. How can we claim one of the other two spots?
1. Run the table and win the ACC championship game
2. Pac 12 champ does not finish undefeated (very likely. UO will lose a game)
3. OU loses a Big 8 game (likely IMO)
4. Ohio State loses a B1G game (not likely)
5. Cincinnati definitely looms as a problem. They might need to lose one
If OU and Ohio State both lose a game, it will be to someone far inferior to UGA and their conference wins won't be very impressive.
Right now, our chances of reaching the CFP are definitely less than 50%, but all hope is not lost. The focus should be on improving the offense because unless that happens, we are not a championship caliber team anyway. No use in getting there just to get slammed again.

Ah…no. Let’s assume Alabama is undefeated. They are on. UGA does not lose until SEC title game. They are in. So that leaves two spots for Oklahoma, Ohio State and us if we win out. If Oklahoma and Ohio State are undefeated then we are out. But the more likely scenario in my opinion is they have a loss along the way. So you have us with our only loss against the dawgs and them with a loss against a lesser team. I think in that scenario we have a decent chance.

Doomsday post....

Long, exciting football season ahead, never count anyone out, that's foolish. We've seen in sports plenty of times where a team started out weak and came on strong - and teams look great in opening week and tail off and fade. Especially in football. Why even play if the attitude is "if we lose a game, we're done" ?

Odds are very good that your Coastal Div opponent

is going to have 2-3 losses. (if you win the Atlantic) Winning the ACC title AND winning against "another" poor ACC team isn't going to help you. I suggest you consentrate on recruiting OL and try again next year. Cincinnati, UCLA or Oklahoma is going in your place this time. Truth.
