With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

Feb 7, 2022, 9:38 AM

folks see the Georgia and Clemson rivalry progressing?

In complete honesty, I do not see UGA going anywhere.

How long will Dabo be at Clemson?

Could the UGA/Clemson rivalry become the best rivalry in college football?

Dabo won another CFP in 2018 beating Alabama 44-16 in the title game. Dabo was 48 years old with that second CFP title in 2018..

We will see how Kirby does at 48 years old.

My guess is Dabo will likely coach into his early/mid 60's.

None. There’s only 1 step up for Kirby or Dabo and it’s Bama.

They could go Jimbo route and chase money at Texas or USC when the Lincoln train blows up. But honestly it’s Bama, then OSU, UGA and Clem. Then everyone else.

Feb 7, 2022, 9:49 AM

I think it remains solid for a long-time. UGA not going anywhere and Kirbee not going anywhere remains to be seen. From experience Clemson will tell you is not a gimme, you can have a great team on track and then an LSU one-year wonder shows up or your QB who was great the year prior craps his pants and flops.

Georgia and Clemson should play every year. No sense in having 2 major programs separated by less than 100 miles not play every year. Both should drop SC and use that opening. Sure the SEC can do some rearranging seeing you are supposed to play them yearly.

I think in the next 20 years you guys probably win 3 or so more National Titles the way things are going for you guys with recruiting. I don't think Dabo will be at Clemson as HC for 20 more years. Let's just say he was, I would think Clemson would win a few more National Titles as well due to the ACC making it so easy for us to get to the playoff. You guys will have to through A&M or Bama, so that will obviously slow you down. I am not sure how often we will play you guys.

I was born in Atlanta and have lived in Georgia my entire life. My mom was from Anderson and had established ties to Clemson. My dad grew up in rural Georgia. He actually took a class in the Tech Tower. My brother was vice president of the student body at GT and my sister in-law was a GT cheerleader. I love Clemson and UGA is the enemy. Clemson and UGA should play every year. It would be good for both teams and it just makes sense. I think both Clemson and UGA are in the top tier for the long haul. I was actually pulling for UGA this year after beating us, that is until you guys lost to
Alabama and screwed everything up for everybody who is not a SEC fan.
I would love to see this rivalry continue if the fans can behave themselves. Growing up in Georgia I have seen a lot of bad fan behavior. I am sure there are bad Clemson fans. I admit I am biased but I just haven't seen nearly as much of it coming from the Clemson side.

Feb 7, 2022, 10:00 AM

for at least the next 10 years. All 3 have very healthy programs.

UGA has done a poor job in the past of developing and mentoring their guys. They've always had talent. I think Kirby has finally figured out that culture is important. But I also think that the transfer portal helps UGA more than Clemson or Bama due to the type of culture that Kirby wants in place. It's just a different way to skin a cat.

I don't think it helps young people grow up to be good men, citizens, husbands, etc. But I do think it produces winning football games. So I think as long as Kirby stays the course and remains halfway humble, then he can have a great program. If he gets too caught up in treating his players like a factory, pulling scholarships from recruits, etc...then he could have some ups and downs.

Kirby has had more players than Dabo drafted...and more 3*'s than Dabo drafted in the 1st round. But go on with Kirby can't develope. I'd say there is more proof in Dabo not developing. CU lucked out with two generational QB's. Without them you have nothing to hang your hat on other than ACC's and 1981.

Enjoy the mayo bowl next year, cause I'm sure Dabo will continue to develop DJU into the 13th best QB in the ACC next year. That would be an inprovement!

UGA players drafted since 2016 - 35

Feb 7, 2022, 10:17 AM

I feel that there are too many unknowns to answer your question. I will say be careful about stating that you do not see UGA going anywhere. Texas A&M and Texas are about to change the balance of football in the SEC. You saw that it took LSU less than two years to get rid of Coach O.

If the number of playoff teams are expanded, will it be beneficial to play out of conference teams? I love the Clemson/UGA rivalry but, want what is best for Clemson football.

flag link

Re: With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

[1]
Feb 7, 2022, 10:18 AM

To answer your questions honestly Bulldog;
Clemson should do better in terms of conference championships because the ACC is still a weaker conference top to bottom but both schools should dominate their division until Auburn and Alabama go to the SEC East when Texas and Oklahoma start conference play in the West.
In complete honesty see my above statement. Right now there are no teams in the SEC East that should challenge UGA for the next 3 years.
As long as he wants to be and he maintains his program at the highest level.
No because there are other rivalry's that are older, or just as big as and that play each other every year where as this rivalry is not yearly game like Alabama /Auburn or Ohio State Michigan. Also Clemson and UGA are not in the same conference as those other two match-up's I mentioned so they do not have the same significance.
And what makes you think Kirby is going to be at UGA for the next 20 years?

flag link

I would not assume Kirby is going to be there long at all.

[2]
Feb 7, 2022, 10:24 AM

The "life" expectancy of Natty winning coaches in the SEC not named Saban is pretty dawgonne short, actually.

Les "Mad Hatter" Miles-lasted eight seasons after winning the Natty at LSU in 2007.

Urban "Oscar" Meyer- Gone from Florida for "medical reasons", only lasted two seasons after winning his second Natty in 2008.

Gene "Camback" Chizik-Gone from Auburn, only lasted two seasons after winning the Natty in 2010.

Ed "Cookie Monster" Orgeron-gone from LSU, only lasted two seasons after winning the Natty in 2019.

So, if recent trends are applicable, Kirby may only have two seasons left as Georgia coach!

Then, maybe another 41 year Odyssey in the making? Who knows? Only the Shadow Nose.

Re: With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

[1]
Feb 7, 2022, 10:26 AM

Just because of conference commitments I don’t think this rivalry will ever get back to the way it was in the 1970s and 80s. And that is a shame.

When it is all said and done my money would be on Dabo being HC at Clemson longer than Kirby at GA. Just a gut feeling. I think Dabo has another 10-15 years that could turn into 20 more but I am also accused of being overly optimistic on this site so that might be my orange colored glasses talking. My wife’s family is very entrenched in UGA athletics and has been for many many years. Those folks down there tend to turn on any coach not named Dooley or Durham very quickly so I don’t see anyone including Kirby being a fixture there for decades.

I don’t see GA going anywhere either and quite frankly was surprised they went to the Championship this year. Probably not the same take on “not going anywhere” that you meant.

And no, most of us don’t know who you are so maybe you should either enlighten us or we will just continue to think you are the average GA fan (not a compliment).

flag link

Re: With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

Feb 7, 2022, 11:49 AM

I suspect that UGA will be a top five or ten team for at least another decade. They recruit well and are able to get guys into the program. The NIL will greatly enhance their ability to recruit. The coaching staff appears to be solid and The state of Georgia has talent equal to or better than any other state with the possible exception to Florida. Why do you think they will slide downhill?

flag link

Re: With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

Feb 7, 2022, 3:24 PM

Because everything that you mention except NIL has been in place for some time now and they have not been able to keep it together for a full season until last year. I think they really buy into the SEC gauntlet junk and it is in their heads. They should be able to win their division pretty easily for the next few years but I don’t see them winning big games like conference championship games and playoff games with any consistency. The culture among the fans and around the program in general is toxic and I just think they will turn on Kirby quicker than a lot of Tiger fans turned on DJ this year.

flag link

Frankly, I've said for years that I wished Clemson and

[2]
Feb 7, 2022, 10:44 AM

Georgia played each other every year, especially given the proximity.

I know the Dawgs lead the series, but the games have always been fiercely-pitched, usually producing jam-packed stadiums.

Now, that UGA has another title under its belt, the games would be even better, I'm thinking.

Re: With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

Feb 7, 2022, 12:00 PM

Lots of factors. At one time everyone was asking why would Saban ever leave LSU. He got the NFL itch. I see Smart as being more apt to jump to the pro's than Dabo. Also, If they CFP doesn't get settled we may see the SEC and others go their own. That being said if the ACC and SEC remain in NCAA or other umbrella group and the coaches stay, it will obviously be two heavy weights slugging it out.
I'd suspect the rivalry to be more in the CFP. Eventually, they'll start scheduling hyped B1G0 or other schools. The wins will carry the same weight with a press propping up B1G0 and ND but there will be less of a chance for a blemish on the schools records. Ordinarily this would benefit UGA due to the strength of the SEC. If Clemson had one this years opener UGA is wouldn't have made it to the CFP with two losses. Oregon will be a much easier match up next year.

flag link

Re: With Kirby at Georgia for at least the next 20 years how do..

Feb 7, 2022, 12:31 PM

Clemson and Georgia will never play every year because neither will want to give up a home game. Both sell out every game so there is no incentive to play every year.

flag link

You've climbed the mountain

Feb 7, 2022, 12:56 PM

staying on the mountain is a whole other ballgame.

Only Alabama/Saban seem to have that figured out. Georgia and Kirby's fate depend more on how long Saban coaches

The question was posed to get opinions of Clemson fans. If you asked this on a Georgia board it wouldn't be very interesting because most Georgia fans don't know the state of the Clemson program and those that do certainly don't know it as well as the people here. Again, it is ok if you can't have conversations with people from other fan bases but some on here can without getting upset.

I’ll give my honest opinion about Clemson football. I know you’re a new poster also. I’ve seen bulldog around for awhile but you may have been lurking for awhile like I did for years. This past year was ridiculous based on the quality of players we have on our team. If we had any kind of decent QB play we would have won our game against y’all this year. Dabo is making things right now and it was a big learning year for him and our staff. I have a lot of faith in that cat to right the ship. I know he can do it. There is something special about him in the way he deals with people.
Regarding Georgia, it looks like y’all have finally got those great recruits playing up to their potential as a team. You will continue to get the recruits as always but whether you win another national championship soon remains to be seen. As long as you have to deal with Nick Saban every year who knows? Until he retires it will be tough. Like Dabo, he knows how to get it done. After you get a taste of going to the playoffs every year you think you must be there every year or your season is a failure. We’re spoiled. You have plenty of players we wanted. I keep up with recruiting and know as much or more about it than my husband. Would have loved to have Nakobe Dean and Jamaree Salyer in the last few years.

It will only become a rivalry if UGA is willing to play it. I have been told by sources at both UGA and Clemson that UGA is the hang up in the game not becoming a regular game. Due to the Fl game being neutral site, and the GT came , The athletic department not willing to give up a home game every other year. It's a money thing I guess. I don't think either school is scared to play the other one.
