Recruiting and Friday night football

Oct 21, 2017, 12:09 AM

I know I may get slammed and have the obligatory “trust the staff” response, but with this being bye week, I have to ask, are there any of our coaches at any high school games trying to stay in contact with high profile recruits? Or are most of the coaches: Dabo, Venables, and Pearman at the Daniel High School game watching their own kids? I’m not slamming our staff. They have us in the best shape that Clemson has ever been. I’m just hoping that we never get complacent and fall behind with guys that we could seal the deal with. Kirby Smart is recruiting like his hair is on fire and our recruiting is so slow right now and for the past several months. We have no running back for this cycle, no offensive lineman (we will lose a couple after this season) and the OL is a position you have to continuously bring in more talent every cycle, we have 1 WR who has played QB so far, we have defensive ends, tackles, and linebackers but could lose almost our entire starting front 4 making another DT and KJ Henry very important.

I had been of the mindset that we would probably got about 9-3 or 10-2 this year and thought if the coots wanted to stop a streak before it got out of hand that this was the year to try and stop us. I’m afraid that if we lose Ferrell, Bryant, and Wilkins and Dabo will not hand the QB position over to TL even if he plain out wins the position that we could take a step back next year.

Someone tell me I’m worrying too much. Is there anyone else a little worried about zero momentum in recruiting? I’ve heard we could possibly take as many as 20 in this class because of guys leaving early and potential transfers. We currently have 11. Where are we going to find 9 more guys worth a scholarship at this point. Thought?

Shut up

It is surprisingly slow right now

I know it seems very slow right now, especially coming off of last season and with such a great start. It is strange that we haven't gotten a commitment lately. And we have had a crazy number of recruits pulled out from under us lately. I think there is some serious negative recruiting going on. I do trust that the coaches will pull another great class, but I'd really like to get the class sparked again.

We still have big needs at several positions. DB, OL and RB all need to be filled with quality players. I know we have a chance with Mayes and McFadden. Losing RG to Florida hurts. He is a high ceiling prospect. Dixon would be a solid pickup at RB and fits our offense well. Johnson at S would be great. Another CB, such as Bookie would be good, but I'm confident there is plenty of talent at DB on the board.

WR, TE, and DE are other positions we have 1 spot each at. None are mandatory and we will only take a 5*. Muhammed just went to Meeshagun, so we will likely not take a TE this cycle. We still have a great shot with Ross from Alabama at WR. And then Henry is still heavily considering Clemson.

Snowflake Basher........Out

Let's look back over the past five years.

Oct 21, 2017, 1:20 AM

Every one of those years we lost stars off our team. ESPiN was consistently pushing our losses with no mention of who remained and who our incoming stars were. How did that all work out for ESPiN when they did it?

If you're not careful ESPiN will try and hire you to continue their casting doubt on Clemson's ability to maintain a grand football program.

Kirby is the new thing in the southeast. The newness will wear off when he has to play somebody with a pulse.

BTW, You worry too much.

Thanks guys for all of the responses except for “shut up.” Not sure what I said to deserve that. I, like everyone on here sans trolls, want the best for this program. I honestly thought we would have guys fighting their way on to the team after winning the Natty.

the way this groupo has recruited if you think they just sat last night out then that is just naive. I'm sure there was coverage where they felt there were opportunities. They dont post every move. we've never had recruits with better offers and rankings. have a little faith. they've shown they know what they are doing

As it stands now we only have 11 scholarships to give before Juniors/early draftees, so were on. I wouldn't be surprised for us to end some where around 16-17 with KJ Henry, Lynn-J Dixon, Tyreke Johnson, Justyn Ross, and an OL or two (we took three last year and only lost Jay).

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Bravetiger your are an idiot. That is all

Sheeesh, you are kidding right? Our coaches aren't going

Oct 21, 2017, 8:20 AM

to offer scholly's when they don't have a spot. As one poster mentioned we know we have 11 available. We are likely going to have several more due to early departures, but what if those players get hurt(god forbid) and decide to stay one more year? Or they get a draft grade they don't like and stay one more year? Our staff has always been pretty responsible with how they handle recruiting and successful. This year is no different, we have the top 2 players in the country committed for crying out loud!

Add in the fact that we are swimming with the sharks on some highly sought after kids that will push their recruiting until they end. FSU used to get a boat load of commits every year on NSD. We are doing just fine, in fact much better than fine.

PS: change your screen name or toughen up those poasts!

Don't forget about the bag men out there buying recruits for other schools.

My screen name is because I’m an Atlanta Braves and Clemson Tigers fan =thebravetiger

Sorry if I offended anyone with my post. I don’t see anything wrong with not wanting to lose momentum in recruiting. I, maybe a bit naive, thought that we could get pretty much anyone we offered after back to back years in the National Championship game and winning one. I’m not a fairweather fan. I have been a fan since I was 6 years old. I remember listening to radio broadcasts of our games back in 1981 with my dad outside while we raked and burned leaves, listening to the one and only Jim Phillips. There was nothing like being with my dad, the smell of the leaves burning, and hearing the voice of the Tigers- Jim Phillips.

I’ll keep my thoughts to myself from now on if they are even remotely that of negative thoughts. I just don’t want to see what we have right now come to an end.

It's ok to have doubts creeping in the attic. Look at it this way... We have the number one offensive player in the country who's also the overall top, the number one defensive player, and the number one kicker.
