Will Healy as OC?

Dec 11, 2021, 10:06 AM

Long shot and long post, sure I'll be criticized for thinking out loud... Since Healy's arrival to Charlotte in 2018, he has developed a young program ahead of schedule and made them competitive considering their youth.

He played QB in college and despite his age has good experience in the coaching ranks. His salary at UNCC is around $750k a year. Could the opportunity of a raise and being a Dabo disciple on his resume lure him from a HC to and OC role? It could help advance his career and give him more exposure, but may also be a good fit for the time being.

I think younger coaches are going to be drawn to Dabo's culture and he has proven that his assistant's can move on to lucrative head coaching opportunities from his system.

While Dabo prefers to hire from within, I'm not sure how sustainable that is if you have a high rate of turnover? Younger coaches you bring up may not be as developed and an outside hire of an experienced coach could reduce the learning curve and provide a more complete product.

Healy has drawn comparison's to Dabo's character and may fit the Clemson culture as an OC.

I'll leave the hiring and firing to Dabo, I'm confident he will make a good decision, just sharing a thought.

He's definitely a coach on the rise, but I believe OC at Clemson is a promotion vs. demotion. I don't think it would have a negative effect on his trajectory as a head coach at a power 5 program at all, it may actually help his resume.

Ah yes imaginary brownie points that no matter how high or low the posts are still the same. You know in the real world there is no reward for good behavior. It's only the idiots who work hard for pennies thinking people are going to notice them one day that have this mindset.

I agree, head coach is almost always a better job than a coordinator.***

He was in deep discussions and consideration for Missouri and a couple others last year, I love the idea just don’t think it’s realistic. He’s a huge Dabo fan and modeling his coaching and program after him, he’s been very open about that.

Even though I’ve not seen anything announced yet about the OC job it seems it is Dabos model to promote within. I think it is the best if you have a qualified person.

Agreed, depends on what you have left in the cupboard when another coach moves on.

Clemson is a destination job, it's a career builder for coaches and players. I think the athletic department acknowledges how attractive it is and goes after a proven winner. Just be ready to adapt and rehire in a few years when your coach is poached away. Accept coaching attrition as a compliment, just rehire and keep producing a winning culture.

would make a good OC. He sounds like he would indeed make a good one. I would only disagree with those who criticize Dabo for doing this his way, when they apparently don't even understand his way. I would also point out that it's late in the game to be throwing out potential candidates.

We lost an OC yesterday. How can it be late in the game when we did not have an opening before yesterday. Its never too late to hire a good person to fill a need in an organization. I have done this several times over a 40+ year career in one of the largest organization in the world. Go Tigers

Assuming you are serious, this is what I am talking about.

Dec 11, 2021, 11:10 AM

True, we officially lost our OC yesterday, but Dabo has been preparing for this day for years. Both Venables and Elliott have won the Broyles award as the top assistant coach in all of college football, and other schools have flirted with them for head coaching positions in the past, so Dabo knew this day was coming at some point. Meaning, he didn't wake up this morning with the realization that "Wow, I don't have an OC, I'd better get busy!". Rather, he's had plans in place for a long time, ready to roll. If (big "IF") what we are hearing is true, he has already identified the people he wants to fill those vacancies, they are already on staff, and he has been grooming them for some time. He doesn't need to do a nationwide search, he doesn't want to interview a list of outside candidates; he has had a different plan all along. In effect, he did his search, identified his candidates, and has been vetting and grooming his candidates for some time. He has his guys and is way ahead of the curve in may respects.

Again, this is based on a lot of assumptions that may or may not be true, and if they are, we'll see how it plays out. Ultimately, it's Dabo's job that's on the line.

Yes, my post is late in the process, but know announcements of any replacements is unsettling. Fans and recruits are waiting, but I trust Dabo's process and I'm sure he'll get it right.

Dec 11, 2021, 9:58 PM

He’s a head coach that will probably get his shot at a bigger program without having to take a “demotion”. I think Missouri was interested in him like 2 years ago. He needs to continue gaining HC experience and he’ll get his shot at a bigger program.

I’m surprised Healy wasn’t in the running at Duke. Regarding our OC, it’s likely Streeter and Dabo gets another QB coach. I hope he goes outside for that hire, but I can also him giving it to Tajh. He would not be my pick.
