How will CFP expansion change perception?

Jun 14, 2021, 9:45 AM

When the CFP goes from 4 to 12 teams, how will your perception of playoff appearances, "final four" appearances, and championships change, if it all? Now I realize that answers to these questions would differ based on who your team is, but I am just curious.

First of all, a championship, won on the field, is a championship, and I can't see an argument where a championship in one format is any more or less valuable than a championship in another.

But what about playoff appearances that don't result in a championship? Is qualifying for the CFP in a 12 team format equivalent to qualifying in a 4 team format? And what about making the semifinals? The 12 team format should eliminate the "they didn't deserve to be there argument", but a win in the semifinals should eliminate it, too.

Anyway, 6 appearances (and counting) for us, and only once did we get knocked out in the first round. There will be many more appearances to come, regardless of the format.

Sorry for the rambling post, and I know all that matters is winning it on the field, but I thought the question might generate some interesting discussion.

No, of course qualifying for the CFP in a 12 team format

Jun 14, 2021, 9:51 AM

is not equivalent to qualifying in a 4 team format. Qualifying for the playoffs will get watered down for sure.

Also, we got knocked out in the first round twice (2017 & 2020).

My bad, so two wins, two finals and two final fours

Jun 14, 2021, 10:00 AM

So many appearances, it is hard to remember the outcomes. I was at the first semifinal loss, and I guess I just blocked out the 2020 one. That one has an asterisk, anyway, due to COVID, right? ;)

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes it has an asterisk. It would not have had an asterisk if

Jun 14, 2021, 10:20 AM

we had won.

I think you will continue to see...

Jun 14, 2021, 10:03 AM

the same three or four teams in the final four year after year including Bama, Ohio State and Clemson.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

I think those will likely continue to lock down top 4 seeds

Jun 14, 2021, 10:43 AM

But they will have to still win a game (against someone coming off a win) to make the final four. It will be fun to see some upsets...as long as our Tigers are not one of the victims!

will be interesting to see what happens........

Jun 14, 2021, 10:07 AM

when a 3 loss team gets on a hot streak and wins the national championship, what will the one loss teams be saying then, 12 teams is too much, eight would be better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Will also be interesting to see who will become the first

Jun 14, 2021, 10:41 AM

to win 16 and then 17 games in a season? Can you imagine how painful it would be to win 16 straight and lose in the final? Seems like it will be extremely rare for teams to be undefeated and outside the top 4, but it will happen, and someone will eventually win 16 and/or 17.

Also can't wait to see the first G5 team take out a top 4 seed (or maybe even a #1 seed). That will make the sportswriters' heads spin!

17 wins is tricky

Jun 14, 2021, 11:04 AM

But I'd be fascinated to celebrate the first-ever 17-win national champs.

To do it under the proposed system, you'd have to play a full regular season with a conference title game that ISN'T considered top-4 afterwards, so if a team ever did win in the end it could be very much a "Cinderella story" the way we perceive it. That certainly wouldn't be boring for the sport & that team would have multiple top-ranked wins.

I think that's the biggest outlier; making it to the final 4 in a 12-team system is inescapably something to celebrate. The matchups might not always be elite-level competitive, but they'll likely always be massive in scale & scope. Even the bare minimum number of wins for a title in this system will include enough big games by nature to answer the OP. Can't wait, honestly. Bring it on!

Tricky but very possible...just won't be a P5 team

Jun 14, 2021, 11:32 AM

There are only 4 byes, and they are reserved for the four highest ranked conference champions. Clearly any P5 team that goes undefeated and wins its conference will be in the top 4, but it is pretty likely that there will be an undefeated conference winner in a G5 conference that is not in the top 4.

Even so, they will have to win two other games to get to a game 17, so yes, unlikely. I don't think it will take long at all for a 16 game winner, but 17 will definitely take awhile.

Re: How will CFP expansion change perception?

I’m one of those “4 is enough” members but think back if you’re old enough of what is was like to be little ole Clemson. We would have loved to have been an underdog going up against the national powers in 30s-40s and even later. Army, Ohio St., USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas or Nebraska. Our Cotton Bowl win against BC was that type of game. Also our loss to LSU in the Sugar was the same way. A lot of you are talking of 5 through 12 as if they don’t have a prayer. The right team with the right coach and if they’re hungry enough, they can and will surprise a lot of people.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree totally, and there will be years that we are praying

Jun 14, 2021, 11:35 AM

for a 5-12 berth, but will be confident that given a chance, we can take it all the way. FWIW, I think the current plan is fine, but would be very open to some tweaks. I think 12 is a bit excessive, but it looks like what we are going to get. Just wonder how long it will be before we have 5 SEC teams in the 12 team field.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, obviously making the field will not be as difficult,

Jun 14, 2021, 11:50 AM

so just getting there will not be as much of an accomplishment. But, it WILL keep a lot more teams and their fanbases in the hunt and interested in the regular season.

Downside will be that the early season artificial ranking boost that the media types give the SEC every year will now extend through the entire season, as they try to get nearly the entire conference into the Top 12.

Vandy vs Kentucky will now become a "Titanic matchup with Playoff implications for both teams". Oh, Deer Lowered.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still absolutely difficult

Jun 14, 2021, 12:34 PM

The more I think about it, it's still an outright accomplishment to make a 12-team playoff.

We know it will contain at least a few conference champions----in other words, it's just as difficult to make it for many if not all.

It also solves the problem of IF we ever had all P5 conference champs and more undefeated but now they CAN'T be left out and rightly so (even if the seedings are contentious). Also makes it more equal if a team lost a game in the regular season as we've seen from even some of the most elite teams who still won the national title.

And we're talking top-12----they're at least arguably competitive enough to make it no less difficult than the 4-team format in spite of any blowouts we've had; they can't all be as elite as Alabama, Clemson & Ohio State have been recently, but many of them should be able to compete well if not win against other top-level teams, including even the most elite. A single win over Alabama, Clemson or Ohio State is always a tremendous deal, IMO.

Re: How will CFP expansion change perception?

Jun 14, 2021, 12:10 PM

Yeah there needs to be some branding for the different rounds. Obviously Final Four is taken so something fresh but maybe we can have different color playoff logos for years we make it to different levels? Not sure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ideally, There is a SIXTEEN Team playoff

Jun 14, 2021, 12:33 PM

Winner of each Conference Auto goes, and six wildcards. Sweet Sixteen of College Football. None of this "there is no way a Sunbelt Team could beat a Clemson". Poppycock I say, you don't really know till its tried.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Everyone loses, total chaos

Jun 14, 2021, 12:38 PM

Hypothetically thinking, what IF Ohio State, Clemson & Alabama are ranked in the top 3 but they all eliminated in their first game of the playoff.

The remaining teams, I mean, I just can't imagine how wild that would be for the sport, no matter how unlikely, but I don't think we'd discount the winner, particularly since they'd likely have a win over at least one of the elites.

I also like the idea of running up W's against teams like Wisconsin, Michigan, Oregon, So. Cal, Penn State, Texas, et al.
