Kelly Bryant could be another Woody Dantzler ...

Mar 25, 2017, 5:41 PM

As great runner and overall athlete as Dantzler was, he was only a so-so passer.

Would our current offense thrive with Woody at QB ?

Woody was da man!!!

Mar 25, 2017, 5:48 PM

Loved watching him play

Was Woody a good decision maker and did he panic when under pressure? We need a QB that won't make bad decisions, who's accurate, has pocket awareness, and plays calm. Let's hope Kelly has what it takes.

Clemson's offense has changed dramatically between 2000 and 2017... I would answer with a firm "no".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

gotta agree with the yank...

Mar 25, 2017, 5:57 PM

With todays offense putting up record passing numbers and the group of recievers we have had the last several years I think we are built for a true dual threat one that is a great passer and elusive runner. I loved watching kelly in the miami game but i still have my money on Coop or Johnson to win the job.

No.

Rich Rod's offense is quite a bit different than Clemson's present version of the HUNH. There's some concepts that translate, but basically Rich Rod's offense is extremely simplistic, especially in terms of passing concepts, compared to what Clemson's present offense does.

The more pro scouts parse Watson's game, in particular, the more they're realizing Clemson's passing game is predicated heavily on a bunch of pre-snap reads and adjustments...most of which the QB controls and the remainder of which are on the WR. It's basically a "go where they aren't" concept, but there's pre-determined reads and checks the QB can make in terms of adjusting protections and playcalls...a lot of times the QB isn't given a "play call" pe se, he's given a menu, and we're really heavy into RPO (run-pass-option) stuff that has about 4 different outcomes based on what the defense is showing you. On top of which, Clemson's WR's themselves are running mostly option routes where they alter their WR along a "route tree" based on what the D is showing them...and the QB is expected to make the same read and put the ball to a spot based on said read.

It's much more complicated than Rich Rod's old offense, even more complicated than Gus Malzahn's offense which is similar in presentation, and - no surprise - it heavily features the wide receiver.

At the end of the day, this is still Wide Receiver U and the offense was always built with that edge in mind - our WR's are better than yours, better than anybody who can cover them, and this offense was built with the idea of maximizing the wide receiver position's ability to beat the other team...basically ever which way a WR can beat another team.

A QB who cannot throw decisively and well down the field is going to have problems. There's just no hiding in this offense. A QB who can throw accurately deep (Tajh Boyd as well as Watson) will break scoreboards; one who can't is going to get exposed pretty quick. No matter how well he can also run.

As I was trying to say before I hit the wrong button on my phone..
Great points from Q as usual..
My question for him and others ..if Bryant seems to be our best option will they adjust our offense?
I believe our current OCs are an upgrade over Chad because they are not nearly as stubborn and are willing to adjust..

I believe with our defense we could win games with a Vince Young/Tim Tebow style offense..neither of them were great passers but both were running threats..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson has attracted a superb group of WRs because of ...

Mar 26, 2017, 8:37 AM

... our prolific passing game.

If we adjust our offense to accommodate a lesser passer, those WRs will probably not be content.

And future star WRs may not sign with us as readily.

If we had no other option but Kelly Bryant, then changing our offense might make sense, but we have several fine passers on the roster right now with a terrific new one on the way next year.

It cuts both ways though. Because our offense has focused on the WR position, that may be the reason why we appear to be having trouble cherry picking the to RBs each recruiting season.

But that's our offensive identity. We've been in the National Title game two years in a row because we had a great passer throwing to superb WRs with a good enough running game to keep people honest.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You have to be able to throw when a defense stops your run

Mar 25, 2017, 5:59 PM

and they all want to stop your run. The good ones can do it. They put too many in the box for you to run it. What is you gone do?

Plus a great team surrounding him.***

Wouldn't didn't have anywhere near the talent

Mar 25, 2017, 6:11 PM

Around him that KB will have. If KB is the talent that Woody was, we will have another 10+ win season.

Woody and Kelly are nothing alike***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why not compare & contrast instead of blanket statement?

Mar 25, 2017, 9:41 PM

I disagree with you. I think they bring very similar skills and abilities to the table. Physically, they are not the same stature, but skills and abilities are very much alike.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the game has changed too much

Mar 25, 2017, 6:48 PM

For him to be another Woody. Back then defenses weren't quite as fast and you could get away with a QB being run first and pass second. These days if you aren't backing off the safety's with a decent passing game, good luck trying to run the ball.

Woody was an incredible athlete who happened to play QB.

Mar 25, 2017, 8:34 PM

I do not think he was a great QB, and do not think he would shine in our current offensive scheme. I think Kelly Bryant has more upside as a QB.

Re: Kelly Bryant could be another Woody Dantzler ...

Mar 25, 2017, 8:41 PM

If anything, he will be more like Hurd at Bama. Not all that much of a threat with the pass, but he can flat out run the ball. Maybe our O is changing this year - dunno, but I doubt it. Our WR's are way too good to ignore them. We need ~ 50/50 pass/run plays, but with KB I think we get 40/60 pass/run.

Re: Kelly Bryant could be another Woody Dantzler ...

Mar 26, 2017, 6:18 AM

And Dan Quayle could of been another John Kennedy, lol.. I love Woody Dantzler! He was a tremendous athlete and his Heisman hype was well earned. Okay, so he wasn't a great passer, but he was a very good one. And with two minutes left, next to Deshaun, I'd take him. He was a leader with the heart of a lion. He was THE FIRST QB in NCAA FOOTBALL HISTORY to PASS for 2000 YARDS and RUSH for 1000 YARDS... Who can forget his game in 2000 against NC State at Carter-Finley? In that 45-37 win, Woody completed 23 of 27 for 333 yards and 4 TD's with 0 picks - and p.s. he also carried the ball 23 times for 184 yards and 2 more TD's!! But my favorite game with him at QB was the road win versus Georgia Tech in 2001. He scored on that 11 yard run in OT and we won 47-44! We had to live with Georgia Tech beating us in Death Valley the year before on that Godsey to Watkins last second td pass. Woody got hurt in that game so he wanted redemption..mission accomplished! While he was at Clemson we also beat the Gamecocks 3 out of 4 and his bomb to Gardner in 2000 to lead to the winning FG was so sweet! Dantzler completed 47% in 98, 55% in 99, 56% in 2000, and 60% in 2001. And interestingly, his efficiency in 98 was 87.6 on 17 attempts, 127.5 in 99 on 201 attempts, 129.7 on 244 attempts in 2000, and 139.8 on 334 attempts in 2001. For his career his efficiency was 132.5. He threw 41 td passes with 24 picks. Not too shabby for a running QB! Woody will always be #1 to me..... And totally unrelated, Happy Birthday to Leeza Gibbons who hails from Hartsville, SC. She only got the mention because she and I share a birthday, lol.. I can hardly wait for the Nfl draft..... Go Tigers!!!!

Go back and watch him vs NCSU and get back with me.

All 3/4 of his incompletions were either tipped at the line of scrimmage? or throw aways; out if the 31+ passes he threw that day. Pretty sure it is the 2001 season. I can't find a link to the complete game
