He was going to leave the entire time imo. Either going pro(which was clearly Dabos goal) or rejoining his family on the west coast.

Yeah, this is the answer.
I said over the summer that this will be the last season he plays for us.
He was either going to ball out and try to go pro, or struggle and get replaced (eventually) and transfer out.
The chances of him doing really well and saying 'you know what, I want to come back for another bite at the apple' were vanishingly small. Like, almost winning the national title and want to come back to try again, small.

The window for the portal opens tomorrow so, of course, DJ is going to move forward. Do you really think he and Dabo haven't been talking about this for quite some time? This is no surprise and no betrayal. Dabo said back in the fall that DJ was graduating in December and he and DJ had a plan. He did not offer any further explanation but I think we now understand what he meant.
No need to raise an issue that isn't there. I'm sure this is all being handled internally the right way and was well thought out and communicated early on.

Makes no sense. Why sacrifice the year if you thought he was leaving anyway? At that point, do the best for teh team. I can't believe DJ seemed like the best choice these last few weeks. If he had been put in against the Chicks, like this week, we probably win and are taking about the championship.

a little butt smooching save us from having to play the season with a true freshman starting and only one qualified QB behind him. That is a recipe for disaster. Cade goes down, no backup for Johnson.

Why do people forget Hunter Helms? He is a decent QB and lit it up in the 2020 Spring game outperforming both DJ and Taisun. That has been almost his only opportunity. In the 2020 season, he was 9/12 for 77 yds with 2 TDs. Pearman is also in the QB room, but I have never seen him take a snap.
