Why is Fla State & UNC playing one game

Why one game in baseball

They didn't play each other in the conference schedule

May 13, 2013, 12:14 PM

They just picked up a game between the last conference game and the start of the tournament. It doesn't count toward the conference record.

Not sure how it will work out for them and what it will mean. No way either of them will pitch anyone that might see time in the conference tournament.

Very interesting strategy. I guess FSU could be trying to secure a top 8 seed, but UNC has nothing to gain. Seems like if this could be done a UNC vs NCST match-up should have been no problem. Good job ACC.

The ACC isn't involved

May 13, 2013, 12:29 PM

Its no different than if UNC decided to play Wofford. A lot of conference teams will play a rival outside the conference schedule. I know Miss/Miss St, Arizona/ASU and Oregon/OSU all play games outside the conference slate.

The only thing I could see is the conference saying that nobody could play after the last conference weekend and the start of the tournament. But that would be tough to control.

For some reason the ACC has a hard and fast rule that a conference series only has 3 days to be completed. I guess that to protect teams travel schedules but you'd think they would develop some reasonable guidelines. Thats why the NCSU/UNC game wasn't made up.

Very odd

A conference game that isn't.

I'm more interested in why NC State isn't playing a makeup of their rained out game with UNC. Could have a bearing on the final division standings.

ACC rule

May 13, 2013, 3:24 PM [ in reply to Re: Why is Fla State & UNC playing one game ]

been discussed numerous times here and even in Baseball America. The ACC requires a series to complete in 3 days.

My guess is that it is to protect the travel arrangements of the visiting teams. I would imagine it would cost tons of $$ if a school had to keep a team in a hotel and change flights/charters at the last minute when the home team controls the game starts.
