Why ESPN might work with the ACC...

Jul 30, 2022, 9:10 PM

There is a growing buzz that ESPN is going to work something out with ACC to raise revenues.

In recent weeks there have been comments to that effect from the UNC AD, Louisville AD, the commissioner of the ACC and others.

I'm in the camp that while we can't predict what FOX and Big 10 will do, I do think ESPN is not
going to orchestrate the demise of the ACC and in fact will put forth some effort to keep the conference viable.

The key to the TV contract, and really the ACC itself, is yesterday, today and tomorrow, Notre Dame. There is likely no path to a new contract without the Irish but NBC has a huge, multi million dollar reason to be involved too.

OH

#### off!!!

I and most Clemson fans I know and talk to friggin' HATE Notre Dame and the fact they are MEMBERS in ANY sports.

ND is for ND only,. Not what you'd call god partners or 'teammates', as conference members. I'd LOVE to toss all ND teams out, immediately. Notre Dame's attitude and approach is proven to be, hurray for me to hell with you. Remember the CFA and how ND bolted after agreeing to be a full financial partner. NBC came and they left, arm in arm, sipping into the pretty sunset.

The TV contract contains a clause that includes "look in" windows every 5 years, during the contract is reevaluated, and can be changed. It's possible that the contract could be increased during one of these windows, if the amount of the contract is undervalued, compared with the rest of the market.

Espin looks at the SEC like they are the major league...

Jul 30, 2022, 10:15 PM

the ACC is just their Triple A league. They're willing to pony up 100 mill per team to the SEC, even though that includes Usuc, Vandy, Mizzou, Ole Miss, Miss St, Kentucky...not exactly a murderers row of football teams. But they only want to pay the ACC teams 30-40 mill each. Sure...they want to keep the ACC together! If the truth be known, they're probably making more off the ACC than the SEC, considering the disparity of payouts! So yeah...they'll probably up the payout to the ACC just enough to keep the conference together...but still be way behind the SEC!

Maybe they should put the ACC & SEC payouts in one pot, and divvy it up according to what each team brings to the table. That way, Clemson's payout would be in the top tier, right up there with Bama and UGA.

No doubt they wouldn't do nothing to help the ACC if it didn't make huge profits off of any deal with the ACC, and they have already made enough off the ACC to make any new deals a big PLUS for ESECPN. IMO, I'm for saying screw ESECPN, and their cry baby Notre Dame A$$HOLES!!!! I mean, wouldn't it be better for Clemson to pull out of the ACC and go private for a couple of years working for a deal that benefits Clemson? Wouldn't our strength in FB be enough to get a much better deal for Clemson without the ACC and ESECPN? Plus I believe that our baseball program, and possibly our basketball could be much better real soon!!!

I wouldn't call them murderer's row, but both Kentucky (#18 in the AP) and Ole Miss (#11) finishd with 10 wins. State had a so-so season but did beat Texas A&M and beat NC State by two touchdowns.

Work with? They going to double the payout?

Jul 30, 2022, 10:29 PM

If not then who cares?!

Even if they double, don't we still come up short of 30 mil or more behind all others???

I think if the ACC can get $70 million per team to the SEC’s $100 million per team we can make that work.

ESPN does not have the ACC's best interest at heart. And I

Jul 31, 2022, 9:24 AM

think this may be my biggest understatement of 2022.

Re: Why ESPN might work with the ACC...

Jul 31, 2022, 9:33 AM

ESPN has the ACC right where they want them... they need inventory and the ACC is providing it at a reduced cost and AGREED to do it at that reduced cost until freaking 2036! The SEC and B1G will get new deals once, MAYBE TWICE before we finish this crazy long TV deal.
If SEC/B1G get $80 million per school in 2024-25, Imagine what they may get in 2030-32 when they negotiate again???
$140 million? $180 million?
Meanwhile we are clunking along at our $35-40 million for another 14 years.

So all that said... ESPN has no incentive to help the ACC get better... it just doesnt want it to die because it has the sweetest deal in the world right now.

If they work with the ACC like they do the cable company were screwed !

Jul 31, 2022, 10:09 AM

There is nothing charitable about espn. They are predatory in their business practices. Just look at your cable bill.

I agree there's incentive to keep the ACC intact and ownership over many of its brands and markets, though as the league is structured today on the football side there's only so much additional funds that could be justified.

Oh great...more

Jul 31, 2022, 2:42 PM

Spurtle and Tac-Lite commercial on the ACCN.

Seriously, is this the best that the ACCN can do?

I saw one ACC game last year and the ACCN commercial ran so many times I knew it by heart!

Nice post. IT should come down to two things

Jul 31, 2022, 7:17 PM

Access to the playoff and money. We can make do with reasonably less money, but we can't embrace being considered a lower tier organization with a group of five type of existence and path to the playoff. If the ACC can remain viable and be considered one of the three or four power conferences, then it would be best for us to be in the ACC with our great situation regarding playoff path. That would be the best outcome. Notre Dame will be the key to all of that.
