Why don't we play Hunter Tyson more often? +/- Stats

Jan 22, 2020, 9:48 AM

After a big game from Hunter Tyson yesterday, I did a bit of digging to see why he doesn't play more often. My general thought was that he may be a defensive liability, so I looked into the total plus/minus stats on our team for the year and average them per minute played.

Note that to not skew these values too much I did not include the cupcake games earlier in the year, only ACC games plus TCU, Colorado, Minnesota, and South Carolina. I couldn't find a +/- for the UNC game either which was odd.

What I found was that Hunter Tyson has the best +/- on the team for these games, with a +/- of 0.00 points per minute. Now that may sound bad that playing even with the other team is our best on the team, but we have not played well in these games as a whole.

Generally if a player is a defensive liability, you would see a bigger drop off in my opinion. For example, our worst +/- player is Trey Jemison who is sporting a -0.58 points per minute largely due to his ability to foul the other team on each possession.

So why do we not play Tyson more? He is 6th on the team in minutes, but on a per game average is 7th behind Trapp and C. Hunter who have dealt with injuries. Chase Hunter is second worst on the team in +/- at -0.37 points per game, yet still seems to get the nod over Tyson much of the time.

Maybe we will see this change as the season goes on, I just wanted some further insight. Obviously Tyson is not a guard, but I don't see a reason we can't run more of a 2 guard 3 forward look sometimes and pair him with Simms/Mack.

shooting free throws. It might make Trapp's free throw percentage look bad.

We'll see Trapp's FT % come up as the year goes on, it is something he has to improve on certainly. FWIW Tyson is only 66% from the line, and Tevin Mack is only 50% on the year. As a team we are just not great at FT's, we only have one guy (Scott) averaging above FSU's entire team average which is no bueno.

I admit I was a little annoyed last night that Brownell took Tyson out and left him out at the beginning of the second half.

I think it just comes down to Tevin Mack playing in front of him. When Tevin Mack is on, he is our best scorer. The issue is that he doesn't seem to have any sort of consistency.

Hunter Tyson has definitely earned more minutes going forward.

At the beginning of the season it did seem that he was in Brownell's doghouse.
