Lamar Jackson

Anybody else paying attention to his fiasco of contract negotiations without using an agent. He big mad he can’t get the the amount of fully guaranteed money the DW4 got and it doesn’t seem any team wants to trade for him either. I’m still mad he got the hiesman over DW4.

Turned down $133 million guaranteed over 3 years. I don't think he has played a full season in 3 years. Dumb move on his part.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Re: Lamar Jackson

He lost favor of the Ravens and other teams when he chose to sit out the last few games last year, including the playoffs because of a PCL injury weeks before. He was pouting for a new contract, and left his team hanging. While he may not have been 100%, he gave up … By contrast, remember when Mahomes sprained his ankle, and hobbled about all the way through the playoffs and Superbowl? 2 first round draft picks + and $250 million guaranteed is a steep price for any team to pay for an “all about me” guy when in crunch time, is not dependable. Good luck Lamar …

To be fair, Mahomes was already under contract when that happened...

True but at the time, so was Lamar .. he wasn’t playing (not playing) for free. He wanted an extension or new contract, while under contract.

Mahomes was under contract for the FOLLOWING year (and many years after). Lamar was not.

As a Ravens fan . i AGREE. i THOUGHT HE COULD HAVE PLAYED AND DSTAYED OUT because of the contract.I knew from the beginning, as special as he can be, it's not something many teams would design the offense around. That limits his possibilities. Did he not see that? That's what he gets for not being very bright and trying to handle it all himself. I'm not a fan of agents, but someone could have told him exactly what you can get, rather than your mother and your Rap friend. Stupid and ignorant.

Re: Lamar Jackson

I've grown to like Lamar a lot more than I did while he was at Louisville, but he's simply not smart enough to be his own agent. This is a mistake that will cost him tens of millions of dollars.

Nobody - absolutely nobody - will get a contract like DW4. DW4 shouldn't even have gotten that contract. The Browns are just stupid.

The Ravens have definitely "outplayed" Lamar from a business standpoint here. They, so far, have correctly assumed that no team will make him a fully guaranteed offer that he would accept, while also having to give up 2 first round picks to the Ravens as compensation. And, if a team does make him an offer he's willing to accept, it sounds like the Ravens are content in moving on with some really valuable draft capital and payroll flexibility.

Sucks for Lamar, because I think he's a great talent. But the longevity in the NFL for a QB of his style, who just missed the last 6 games, is short. His demand for a nearly unprecedented contract is massively overshooting.

He has never appeared to be the sharpest knife in the drawer. His winning over DW for the Heisman is why I don't think a Clemson player will ever win the Heisman. They have a target on Clemson's back for some reason.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He deserved the Heisman, stats were out of this world...

Mar 31, 2023, 8:05 PM

he doesn't deserve what DeSean makes: had to have the entire offense tailored around him, will annually continue to miss more of the regular season due to injury, poor showing in playoff games when compared w/ Watson's standout playoff performances, even in losses. He's simply not the NFL QB that Watson is but more of a "Raven creation" with a short shelf life—

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Neither Lamar Jackson nor his mother, Felicia Jones...

possess the business acumen to handle contract negotiations. This is an ill-advised decision for A LOT of reasons, the least of which is the NFL specifically instructing teams to refrain from negotiating with representatives who aren’t certified by the NFLPA.

That always gets an epic eye roll from me when I hear someone say that - how is he supposed to scrape by on only $133 million?

Cleveland was the only team dumb enough to pay that much guaranteed - especially to someone who's major asset (extending plays) makes him injury prone.

Personally, I can't be mad at someone playing the one of the most violent sports in the world wanting to get the most money they can while they are in their prime.

As for the dollar amount, $133 million is crazy to turn down....but FWIW he ain't getting the full $133M even if he signed the contract.

We gotta remember, for folks at this level of finance, they have teams around them they are paying -- agents, lawyers, etc...not even including if they wanna boost their brand with a social media team or potential advisors for business or their career (on or off the field).

Still, even if he's keeping less than 50% in the scenario above where he signs ($65M), he's also being taxed at the highest rate...so he could potentially make around $30-$40M after the tax man shows up.

I mean, even that amount SHOULD be generational wealth that lasts with the right financial education but we all know the stories of athletes that hit it big and expect that to last forever... hopefully for him he's saved some in case of a worst case scenario.

(Disclaimer: Yeah, my math probably doesn't check out 100% I'll admit just making numbers up in my head for the sake of discussion)

Agent fees in the NFL are capped at 3%. Not even getting into the fact that Lamar Jackson's endorsement portfolio is atrocious for a player of his stature and would surely benefit from a professional he probably is costing himself more outright in contract money because he's not an experienced negotiator.

Guaranteed money means guaranteed no need for the spin often associated with pro-rated style deals with only the signing bonus guaranteed & agents top out at 5% which is menial but he wasn't smart enough to secure one—

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol, reminds me of the famous quote by Andruw Jones when

Mar 29, 2023, 5:15 PM [ in reply to I did see that he said he had to look out for his family ]

he was "insulted" by the Braves only offering him $13 Million a year.

"Man, I can't feed my family on $13 Million a year."

I ceased being an Andruw Jones fan at that point, and was glad when they finally cut him loose.

He was working for about ONE million a year at the end of his career, and liking it.

Re: Lamar Jackson

Mar 29, 2023, 10:42 AM

He is guaranteed like $33.5mil this year. I know he wants that big $200+mil contract but he has definitely played his cards wrong. Initially he said he didn't want to be a distraction going into the season last year, I am sure he hoped that would put the pressure on Ravens to get done before season but that just let them off the hook for a year, then Lamar pouted at the end of the season.

Now he has asked to be traded on March 2nd, there are some teams that are interested but Ravens are going to pull some shenanigans to where they either get a ton for Lamar or he ends up back at Ravens with probably like a 3yr $120mil deal. While not bad, its not the length Lamar wants. But a dude that couldn't even express a phrase let alone a clear vocalized thought when he won the Heisman, that is pretty daggum good money!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lamar has messed this up so badly I don't know where...

Mar 29, 2023, 11:03 PM

to begin.

However, I DO know how it's probably gonna end.

Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts and (maybe) Justin Herbert are going to reset the market and Deshaun's contract will no longer be a factor. After this happens, there will be no reason Lamar and the Ravens can't come to an agreement fairly quickly.

If the water is too poisoned in Baltimore, at least Lamar and other teams will know what to agree on and the Ravens will let him walk for two 1st rounders. I seriously doubt they will match and bring him back.

Problem is, the Bengals, Chargers and Eagles aren't necessarily in any hurry with their QBs because they will return. Lamar and the Ravens will stay in limbo until the ice is broken.

Lamar has truly blown it. I respected him for playing the last two years without an extension, but not coming back this year after being injured really destroyed his value to other teams (and the Ravens). Now it's totally out of his control and he'll be very disappointed when he sees Burrow and Hurts not getting 100% guaranteed contracts. They are both better than him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Lamar has messed this up so badly I don't know where...

Mar 30, 2023, 9:54 AM

Burrow, Hurts, and Herbert are still on their rookie contracts (4th year for each). There's no reason for the teams to sign extensions until next year, or even the year after though that adds some drama.

I think you are right about those three re-setting the QB market, but it will be too late to impact Lamar at least for 2023.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There has been much talk about Burrow and Hurts...

Mar 30, 2023, 9:47 PM

extending this year to help their teams plan for the future. Over the years, the Eagles are known for being one of the smartest teams with the salary cap. The Bengals' GM has publicly stated talks are ongoing and a deal with Burrow will happen this offseason.

For Lamar's sake, I hope one of them does. He's dug himself in a big hole.

ever since the Heisman injustice when he was awarded that flawed trophy over DW4. That being said, he is certainly not doing himself any favors by trying to act as his own agent. His personality, at least what shows on camera, is not conducive to negotiations. If he were truly smart, he would hire one of the top agents, maybe the same one that negotiated that Watson contract that he so publicly seeks?

Any owner with a functional brain would be hesitant to guarantee LJ $ considering the style of play & the massive injury risk Jackson is. And also he sucks in the playoffs, PLAYOFF= lamar SOLVED.
BTW, he should have won the HEISMAN TROPHY, his stats were cartoonish & godlike but he's peaked as an NFL
